Chapter 2: The Things Noah Was Afraid To Say

The ambulance arrived seven minutes later.

Seven minutes had never felt so long.

I spent every second holding Lily against my chest while keeping pressure on my wound with one hand. My shirt was soaked through, my fingers were shaking, and every breath sent a sharp wave of pain through my side.

But none of that mattered.

Because Lily was alive.

That was the only thought I could hold onto.

The paramedics rushed through the front door, carrying equipment and shouting questions.

"Who is injured?""

"Me," I answered.

Then I pointed at Lily.

"But check her first.""

One of the paramedics immediately moved toward her.

"Sweetheart, can you tell me your name?""

Lily buried her face into my shoulder.

"Daddy.""

The paramedic looked at me.

"Sir, we need to examine her.""

I didn't want to let go.

Every instinct inside me screamed that if I released her, something terrible would happen again.

But I forced myself.

"Okay," I whispered.

I handed my daughter over.

And the second she left my arms, I felt like I had failed her all over again.

Across the room, Emma sat calmly on the couch.

She had not moved since the attack.

Not once.

A police officer stepped inside and immediately noticed the scene.

The broken chair.

The scissors on the floor.

The blood.

The terrified children.

His expression changed.

"Ma'am," he said, walking toward her.

"Can you tell me what happened?""

Emma looked at him.

Then she looked at me.

There was no fear in her eyes.

Only calculation.

"My husband became aggressive," she said.

I stared at her.

For a moment, I honestly thought I had misheard.

"What?""

The officer looked between us.

Emma continued.

"He has anger issues. He attacked me in front of the children.""

My mouth fell open.

"You stabbed me!""

Her face remained emotionless.

"See?""

She looked at the officer.

"He is unstable.""

The room spun.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to tell everyone that this woman was lying.

But then I saw Noah.

He was standing near the hallway, trembling.

Watching.

Waiting.

And I realized something.

Emma had been controlling this house long before tonight.

Not just Lily.

Not just me.

Noah too.

The officer approached me carefully.

"Sir, I need your side of the story.""

I opened my mouth.

But before I could speak, Noah interrupted.

"She's lying.""

Everyone turned.

Emma's expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

A flash of anger.

"Noah," she said softly.

That one word made him freeze.

It wasn't a normal mother calling her child.

It was a warning.

I stepped closer to him.

"It's okay, buddy.""

Noah shook his head.

"No, it's not.""

His voice cracked.

"She's lying.""

The officer crouched down.

"Can you tell me what happened?""

Noah looked at his mother.

Then at me.

Then at Lily, who was being examined by another paramedic.

His small hands curled into fists.

"Mom gets mad when Lily cries.""

Emma stood up.

"Enough.""

The officer immediately raised his hand.

"Ma'am, please sit down.""

She ignored him.

"Noah is confused.""

"No," Noah whispered.

His eyes filled with tears.

"I'm not.""

Emma stared at him.

And that was when I saw it.

The fear.

Not normal fear.

The kind of fear a child feels when they know exactly what someone is capable of.

"Noah," I said gently.

"Tell them.""

He swallowed.

"Mom said Lily was ruining everything.""

Emma's jaw tightened.

"Because she was.""

The officer looked at her.

"Ma'am, please don't interrupt.""

Noah continued.

"She said babies cry because they want attention.""

My stomach turned.

"She said Lily needed to learn that screaming doesn't get her what she wants.""

The paramedic examining Lily looked up.

"What exactly did she do before tonight?""

Nobody answered.

Because Noah already knew.

He whispered:

"She locked Lily in the bathroom.""

The room went silent.

My entire body went cold.

"What?""

Noah looked at me.

"Last month.""

Emma's face hardened.

"That is not what happened.""

"Noah," I said, my voice shaking.

"Tell me.""

He wiped his eyes.

"She said Lily had to stay there until she stopped crying.""

I felt sick.

"How long?""

Noah didn't answer.

He looked away.

"How long, Noah?""

"Almost an hour.""

The words hit me harder than the scissors.

I thought about all those nights.

All those times Lily cried and Emma told me:

"She's just being dramatic.""

"She's testing boundaries.""

"You need to stop babying her.""

I believed her.

God help me, I believed her.

The officer looked at Emma.

"Is there any truth to this?""

Emma folded her arms.

"I disciplined my child.""

"Discipline does not involve locking a three-year-old in a bathroom.""

"You weren't there.""

The officer's expression changed.

"No, I wasn't.""

He glanced around the room.

"But tonight I am.""

Emma looked away.

The paramedics finished checking Lily.

One of them approached me.

"Sir, your daughter appears physically okay, but she is extremely distressed. We're recommending she be evaluated at the hospital.""

I nodded immediately.

"Take her.""

Lily reached for me.

"Daddy, come too.""

My heart shattered.

"I will.""

I looked at Emma.

The police officer followed my gaze.

"Sir, you need medical attention as well.""

"I know.""

But I couldn't stop looking at my wife.

Because one question kept repeating in my head.

How long had this been happening?

How many times had Lily needed me?

How many times had I failed to notice?

As they helped me toward the ambulance, Emma finally spoke.

"You're making a mistake.""

I stopped.

The paramedics looked at me.

I turned around.

"What did you say?""

Emma stood in the middle of the living room.

The same living room where my daughter had almost died.

The same place where my wife had attacked me.

"You think you're saving them.""

Her voice was quiet.

"But you're not.""

I stared at her.

"You hurt our daughter.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Then she smiled.

A small, terrifying smile.

"I protected this family from what was coming.""

I felt a chill.

"What does that mean?""

Emma didn't answer.

The officer stepped closer.

"Ma'am, you're coming with us.""

For the first time that night, something changed in Emma's expression.

Not fear.

Not regret.

Anger.

Pure anger.

As they led her away, she looked directly at Noah.

And whispered:

"You know what happens when children betray their parents.""

Noah immediately grabbed my hand.

His fingers were ice cold.

The officer heard it.

He turned back.

"What did you just say to him?""

Emma smiled.

"Ask him.""

Then she walked out.

The ambulance doors closed behind us.

I sat beside Lily while a paramedic treated my wound.

But I couldn't stop thinking about those final words.

You know what happens when children betray their parents.

Because as the ambulance pulled away from the house, Noah suddenly squeezed my hand.

"Dad...""

I looked at him.

"What is it?""

His face was pale.

"There is something else.""

I leaned closer.

"What?""

He looked out the ambulance window at our house disappearing into the darkness.

Then he whispered:

"Mom didn't just hurt Lily.""

He turned back to me.

"She hurt someone before us.""

My breath stopped.

"Who?""

Noah stared at me for several seconds.

May you like

Then he said a name I had never heard before.

And the moment I heard it, I realized my wife had been hiding an entire part of her life from me.
