Chapter 13: The Child Emma Never Lost

The word echoed in my head.

*A child.*

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Because there were only two possibilities.

Either Emma had taken another child...

or one of the children everyone thought was gone had finally been found.

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Who is it?""

Detective Miller didn't answer immediately.

That silence terrified me.

"Detective.""

"We don't know yet.""

My heart sank.

"What do you mean you don't know?""

"The house is abandoned. We saw movement inside through a window. Officers are securing the area.""

"Is the child safe?""

Another pause.

"We don't know.""

I closed my eyes.

Not again.

Not another child waiting somewhere for someone to find them.

I looked at Sarah.

She had heard enough from my face.

"It's Claire.""

The certainty in her voice made me turn.

"What?""

Sarah stood slowly.

"Emma went back for Claire.""

My blood ran cold.

"You said she disappeared.""

Sarah looked down.

"That's what everyone believed.""

"Explain.""

She hesitated.

For the first time since meeting her, Sarah looked afraid.

"Because Emma wanted them to believe it.""

The drive to Emma's childhood home felt endless.

Detective Miller drove faster than before.

I sat beside him, staring through the windshield.

Every tree.

Every road.

Every mile.

Felt like another second a child was waiting.

Behind us, officers followed.

Sarah was in another vehicle.

I didn't trust her.

Not completely.

Maybe I never would.

But I needed answers.

And she was the only person who seemed to know where the answers were buried.

"Tell me everything," I said.

Detective Miller glanced at me.

"About what?""

"Claire.""

He was quiet.

Then said:

"We're still confirming details.""

"Tell me what you know.""

He sighed.

"After the facility investigation, Claire Bennett was officially listed as missing.""

I nodded.

"But?""

"But there were inconsistencies.""

"What kind?""

"The paperwork showed she had been transferred.""

"To where?""

"No record.""

I looked at him.

"Because Emma erased it.""

"Possibly.""

I hated that word.

Possibly.

Maybe.

Unknown.

My entire life had become a collection of things nobody knew.

"Sarah said Emma wanted people to think Claire disappeared.""

Detective Miller nodded.

"That would explain why certain records were altered.""

"Why would she do that?""

He looked at the road.

"We're going to find out.""

I looked down.

"No.""

He glanced at me.

"What?""

"I think I already know.""

I thought about Emma's journals.

Her notes.

Her obsession.

She didn't want children gone.

She wanted ownership.

She wanted control.

Maybe Claire wasn't the child she lost.

Maybe Claire was the child she kept.

The house appeared just before sunset.

Old.

Damaged.

Forgotten.

A two-story building surrounded by overgrown trees.

The paint was peeling.

The windows were cracked.

But one window had light behind it.

Someone was inside.

Detective Miller raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

"Nobody moves until we know what's happening.""

I stepped forward.

He grabbed my arm.

"Daniel.""

"My children.""

"I know.""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"You know what happened to Lily.""

His expression softened.

"You know what happened to Noah.""

I swallowed.

"I can't stand here and wait.""

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he released my arm.

"Stay behind me.""

We approached the house.

The front door was unlocked.

That scared me more than a locked one would have.

Inside, the air smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

And something familiar.

A child's room.

A small voice came from upstairs.

I froze.

Because I knew that sound.

A child crying quietly.

Not loudly.

Not asking for help.

The way children cry when they have learned nobody comes.

I ran.

"Daniel!""

I ignored him.

I ran upstairs.

At the end of the hallway was a door.

Closed.

I opened it.

And stopped.

A little girl sat on the floor.

Maybe eight years old.

Her hair was messy.

Her face was pale.

But her eyes...

I knew those eyes.

Not because I had seen them before.

Because I had seen the same fear.

The same silence.

The same desperate hope.

"Who are you?"" I asked softly.

The girl looked at me.

Then whispered:

"Are you Daniel?""

My heart stopped.

"Yes.""

She looked toward the doorway.

Then back at me.

"Mom said you would come.""

The room went silent.

Detective Miller entered behind me.

"Who is this?""

The girl hugged her knees.

"My name is Claire.""

I couldn't move.

Eight years.

A missing child.

A name written in journals.

A face from old photographs.

Alive.

Standing in front of me.

"Claire...""

My voice broke.

She looked at me.

"Do you know my mom?""

I swallowed.

"Who is your mom?""

She looked confused.

"Emma.""

The word hit harder than anything else.

Detective Miller stepped forward.

"Claire, can you tell us where Emma is?""

The girl became afraid.

"She's coming back.""

"When?""

"I don't know.""

"Where did she go?""

Claire looked down.

"She said she had to finish something.""

My stomach dropped.

The same words.

The same phrase.

"Claire.""

She looked at me.

"What did she need to finish?""

The girl was silent.

Then she pointed toward the closet.

"She left something.""

Inside the closet was another box.

Black.

Of course it was black.

Detective Miller carefully removed it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

And a notebook.

But this notebook was different.

The cover was worn.

Old.

Used.

Detective Miller opened it.

Then stopped.

"Daniel.""

I walked closer.

The first page contained a name.

Not a child's name.

Emma's.

But the handwriting wasn't Emma's.

It was older.

A child's handwriting.

The first entry read:

*"My name is Emma. I am learning how to make people stay.""*

I felt cold.

Detective Miller turned the page.

More writing.

Years of it.

Emma as a child.

Emma documenting her own life.

Her own pain.

Her own fears.

Then we found the page that changed everything.

A drawing.

A little girl.

A house.

Two children.

One older.

One younger.

At the bottom:

*"Me and Sarah before she left.""*

I looked at Detective Miller.

"Sarah was older?""

He nodded slowly.

"Apparently.""

The next page was worse.

A child’s handwriting.

"Sarah told me nobody would love us unless we made them afraid.""

I stopped.

Because suddenly I understood.

Emma wasn't born this way.

Something happened.

Something broke.

But then I remembered Lily.

The fan.

The scissors.

The children.

Pain explained something.

It didn't excuse it.

Detective Miller kept reading.

Then his face changed.

"What?""

He turned the notebook around.

A final entry.

Written years later.

By Emma.

"I found Claire again.""

My breath stopped.

"She remembers too much.""

The room became silent.

"Daniel thinks he is saving children.""

"He doesn't understand that Claire is the only one who knows the truth.""

I looked at Claire.

She was watching us.

Scared.

"Claire?""

She looked up.

"What truth?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she whispered:

"Mommy said I wasn't supposed to tell you.""

My chest tightened.

"Tell me what?""

Claire looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

"That Lily wasn't her first child.""

I froze.

"What?""

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Mommy had another baby.""

Nobody moved.

Detective Miller stepped closer.

"Claire, what baby?""

The little girl shook her head.

"I don't know her name.""

"Where is she?""

Claire looked at me.

And said the words that made my blood run cold.

"She's with Mommy.""

My phone rang.

Everyone turned.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then Emma's voice came through.

Calm.

Soft.

Almost loving.

"Daniel.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Where are my children?""

A pause.

Then:

"Safe.""

My anger exploded.

"Don't say that.""

Emma sighed.

"You still don't understand.""

"Understand what?""

Her voice became quieter.

"That I wasn't trying to take your children.""

I stared at Claire.

At the notebook.

At the evidence.

"Then what were you doing?""

A long silence.

Then Emma whispered:

"I was preparing them.""

The call ended.

Immediately.

A second later, Detective Miller's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

"What's wrong?""

He listened.

Then looked at me.

"Daniel...""

"What?""

His expression was pale.

"The apartment.""

My heart stopped.

"What about it?""

He lowered the phone.

"Someone got inside.""

I felt cold.

"My children?""

He didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Because the fear on his face told me everything.

They weren't missing.

They were taken.

And whoever took them...

May you like

left one message behind.

*"Now you get to learn what it feels like to be corrected.""*
