Chapter 9: The Brother He Could Not Save

The old warehouse stood at the edge of the city like something everyone had forgotten on purpose.

No signs.

No lights.

No movement.

Just a massive concrete building surrounded by empty streets and rusted fences.

The kind of place where secrets disappeared.

The kind of place where people went when they didn’t want to be found.

I sat in the passenger seat of Milo’s car, staring at the building through the windshield.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I was afraid of Damian.

Not completely.

I was afraid because Kit was inside.

My little brother.

The person I had spent years protecting.

The person I had promised I would never abandon.

And now I was walking into danger because someone else had decided his life was a negotiation.

Milo turned off the engine.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he said:

“You should stay here.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

“Sabra.””

“No.””

His expression tightened.

“You don’t know what’s waiting inside.””

“I know exactly what’s waiting inside.””

He looked confused.

“A man who thinks he can control everyone.””

A pause.

“And I’m tired of letting men like that decide what happens to my family.””

Milo looked away.

The city lights reflected faintly in the window.

“You’re more like him than you realize.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

“Kit.””

The answer surprised me.

Milo continued.

“He was afraid.””

I looked down.

“He never showed it.””

“That’s what made him brave.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like something Kit would say about someone else.

Not himself.

Milo opened the door.

“Stay close.””

I followed.

The warehouse door was already open.

That was the first warning.

People who wanted privacy locked doors.

People who wanted fear left them open.

We stepped inside.

The smell hit me immediately.

Dust.

Oil.

Cold metal.

A place that had not been used in years.

Then the lights turned on.

One by one.

A path.

Leading deeper inside.

Milo stopped.

I noticed.

“What?””

He looked around.

“This isn’t right.””

“What do you mean?””

“Damian likes control.””

“And?””

“He wouldn’t make it this obvious.””

Before I could respond, a voice echoed through the warehouse.

“You always did overestimate yourself, Milo.””

Damian stepped out from behind a stack of crates.

Not alone.

Three men stood behind him.

But Damian didn’t need them.

He never did.

My eyes searched the room.

“Where is Kit?””

Damian looked at me.

“You came.””

“Where is he?””

He smiled slightly.

“You sound like your brother.””

My heart tightened.

“Don’t talk about him.””

Damian looked at Milo.

“She still doesn’t understand.””

Milo stepped forward.

“Where is Kit?””

Damian ignored him.

“You know what I find fascinating?””

Nobody answered.

“You spent years pretending you escaped me.””

His eyes moved to Milo.

“But every decision you made afterward was still because of me.””

Milo’s expression hardened.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

Damian walked slowly.

“You built companies.””

Silence.

“You built influence.””

Another step.

“You built a reputation.””

He smiled.

“But all of it came from the things I taught you.””

Milo said nothing.

Damian turned toward me.

“And now she thinks you’re different.””

I stared at him.

“Where is my brother?””

Damian sighed.

“Always impatient.””

Then he nodded.

A door opened behind him.

Kit walked out.

My breath stopped.

He looked exhausted.

But alive.

“Kit!””

I moved forward.

Milo grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed.

Kit wasn’t alone.

A man stood behind him.

Holding a weapon.

My anger disappeared instantly.

“Let him go.””

Damian smiled.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

He looked at Milo.

“The truth.””

Milo’s face became cold.

“You already know it.””

“No.””

Damian shook his head.

“I know my version.””

His eyes moved to me.

“I want hers.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Your brother found the memory card.””

I said nothing.

“Inside it was a recording.””

Damian smiled.

“A recording of the night your brother crashed.””

Milo went still.

I looked at him.

“You’ve heard it?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You heard it?””

“Yes.””

The word came quietly.

I felt anger rise.

“And you still didn’t tell me?””

Milo looked at me.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You always think that.””

The words hurt him.

Good.

Maybe he needed to hear them.

Damian laughed softly.

“You see?””

He looked at Milo.

“She understands you better than you understand yourself.””

Milo ignored him.

“Where is the memory card?””

Damian smiled.

“Close.””

A pause.

“Very close.””

Kit suddenly spoke.

“Sabra.””

I turned.

His eyes were full of fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Damian looked annoyed.

“Quiet.””

Kit ignored him.

“He’s lying.””

“About what?””

“Everything.””

My heart raced.

“Kit, what did you find?””

He looked at Milo.

Then at me.

“The recording wasn’t just about the accident.””

Milo’s face changed.

“Kit.””

“No.””

My brother shook his head.

“You need to know.””

Damian stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Kit looked at him.

“For years, you made everyone believe Milo betrayed you.””

Damian smiled.

“I did.””

“No.””

Kit’s voice became stronger.

“You made Milo believe he betrayed you.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Milo.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Kit continued.

“The night of the accident…”

He looked at Milo.

“You weren’t following someone working against Damian.””

Milo froze.

“What?””

“You were following your brother.””

The words hit like a punch.

I looked at Milo.

He looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

Kit shook his head.

“Yes.””

Damian’s smile disappeared.

For the first time.

A real reaction.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

Kit looked at him.

“I found the original file.””

Silence.

“The one you deleted.””

Milo stared.

“What original file?””

Kit looked at him.

“The one proving your brother wasn’t working for Damian.””

A pause.

“He was trying to expose him.””

Milo stepped back.

The world seemed to tilt.

I watched his face.

All these years.

All this guilt.

All this pain.

Built on something that might not have been true.

Damian suddenly moved.

“Enough.””

The calm was gone.

Just for a moment.

But it was gone.

Milo saw it.

And I saw him understand.

“You lied to me.””

Damian’s expression hardened.

“I protected you.””

“No.””

Milo’s voice was different.

Colder.

“You used me.””

Damian laughed.

“You needed me.””

“I was a child.””

The words shocked me.

Milo had never sounded vulnerable.

Not once.

Damian stared at him.

“You think that matters?””

“Yes.””

Milo stepped forward.

“Because I spent years believing I was the reason my brother died.””

A pause.

“You let me carry that.””

Damian’s face changed.

“You were weak.””

“No.””

Milo looked at Kit.

Then at me.

“I was manipulated.””

The warehouse became silent.

Then Damian smiled again.

But this time it looked forced.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“You think the truth changes everything.””

Nobody moved.

Damian continued.

“It doesn’t.””

He nodded toward Kit.

“Because your brother didn’t just find the recording.””

Kit’s face changed.

I looked at him.

“What?””

Damian smiled.

“He found the second part.””

Milo looked at Kit.

“What second part?””

Kit hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified me.

Because my brother had always been honest.

He was hiding something.

Damian laughed quietly.

“Tell them.””

Kit looked at me.

“Sabra…”

My heart sank.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“The memory card didn’t just show what happened to Milo’s brother.””

A pause.

“It showed who caused your accident.””

I froze.

“My accident?””

Kit looked at Milo.

Then back at me.

“The motorcycle crash.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“That was an accident.””

Kit’s eyes filled with guilt.

“No.””

The warehouse disappeared.

The voices disappeared.

Everything disappeared.

“No.””

Kit whispered:

“Sabra…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I found out the truth.””

A pause.

“The person who caused my crash…”

His voice broke.

“Was trying to send a message to you.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why me?””

Nobody answered.

Then Milo looked at Damian.

And for the first time, I saw pure rage in his eyes.

Because he understood.

Damian smiled.

And said the words that changed everything:

“Because you were never the witness.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“You were the target.””
