Chapter 6: The Night Milo Never Spoke About

The accusation sat between us.

Not written on paper.

Not spoken aloud.

Just there.

Heavy.

Impossible to ignore.

*Ask Milo what he did the night your brother crashed.*

I looked at him.

At the man who had spent the last hour telling me he was protecting me.

At the man who had known more about my brother’s accident than I did.

At the man who now looked like he had finally reached the one question he couldn’t control.

“What did you do?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was unbearable.

Milo looked away first.

That was all it took.

I didn’t need a confession.

I didn’t need a dramatic speech.

A person could lie with their mouth.

But their eyes were usually honest.

“Sabra,” Rurik said quietly.

I turned toward him.

“Did you know too?””

He looked down.

That hurt more than I expected.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone except me.

“I asked you a question.””

Rurik swallowed.

“I knew Milo was connected.””

My chest tightened.

“Connected how?””

He didn’t answer.

“Milo?””

The billionaire remained silent.

I stepped toward him.

“Tell me.””

His expression hardened.

“You need to calm down.””

The words almost made me laugh.

“Calm down?””

“Yes.””

“My brother almost lost his leg.””

“I know.””

“And you know why?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

The room became completely still.

I stared at him.

“You know.””

Milo closed his eyes for a moment.

“Yes.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because he knew.

Because he had watched me struggle while knowing.

All those nights.

All those conversations.

All those times I complained about insurance.

All those times I told him about Kit’s therapy.

He knew.

“You let me thank you.””

Milo looked confused.

“What?””

“Every time you gave me an extra shift. Every time you made sure I had better tables. Every time you acted like you were helping.””

My voice shook.

“You let me believe you were just being kind.””

His face changed.

“Sabra.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t say my name.””

For once, he listened.

Damian leaned against the table, watching.

Like this was a show.

Like my pain was another fight in his cage.

I turned toward him.

“You knew this would happen.””

Damian smiled slightly.

“I knew she would eventually ask.””

“That’s not what I said.””

“No.””

His expression became colder.

“I knew Milo would eventually have to face what he did.””

Milo’s voice turned dangerous.

“Leave.””

Damian ignored him.

“Tell her.””

“No.””

“Tell her what happened.””

Milo’s hands tightened.

“Not from you.””

Damian smiled.

“Then from who?””

Nobody spoke.

And somehow, I knew.

The truth was going to come from Milo.

Because whatever happened that night, he had been carrying it.

I looked at him.

“Start talking.””

Milo stared at the floor.

For several seconds, I thought he wouldn’t.

Then he walked to the bar.

He poured a drink.

He didn’t drink it.

He just held the glass.

“I was thirty-one.””

His voice was quieter than before.

“Before Halcyon. Before the companies. Before anyone knew my name.””

I stayed silent.

“I was working for Damian.””

The words were not surprising.

But hearing him say them changed something.

“You worked for him?””

“Yes.””

Rurik looked away.

Milo continued.

“I thought I was building something.””

Damian laughed.

“You were.””

Milo ignored him.

“I handled problems.””

The phrase was careful.

Too careful.

“What kind of problems?””

His fingers tightened around the glass.

“The kind people don’t report.””

I felt cold.

“I thought I could control it.””

He looked at me.

“I was wrong.””

A pause.

“Damian wanted more.””

“More what?””

“Power.””

Milo placed the glass down.

“He wanted politicians. Judges. Police. Anyone who could make him untouchable.””

“And you?””

“I wanted out.””

Damian smiled.

“You wanted freedom.””

“Yes.””

“And I gave you a choice.””

Milo’s expression darkened.

“Don’t.””

I looked between them.

“What choice?””

Neither answered.

“Milo.””

His jaw tightened.

“Damian told me I could leave.””

That sounded too simple.

“But?””

“But I had to prove I wasn’t a threat.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

Milo looked away.

“That night.””

I knew before he said it.

The accident.

Kit.

My brother.

“No.””

Milo’s eyes met mine.

“I didn’t know it was your brother.””

I felt anger rise.

“That’s supposed to help?””

“No.””

His voice broke slightly.

“I know it doesn’t.””

I stared at him.

“Then what happened?””

Milo took a breath.

“The night of the accident, Damian gave me an assignment.””

“What assignment?””

“To follow someone.””

“Who?””

“An employee who had taken information from him.””

Damian’s face remained calm.

“He was supposed to retrieve a file.””

Milo continued.

“I followed the car.””

“And?””

“And there was a motorcycle.””

The room became quiet.

Milo looked at his hands.

“I saw the crash.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“You saw it happen?””

“Yes.””

“And you left?””

That question hurt him.

I saw it.

But I needed the answer.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

I stepped back.

Rurik looked at me.

“Sabra…”

“No.””

I couldn’t look at him.

“I need to hear this.””

Milo nodded slowly.

“I thought the driver would handle it.””

My voice sharpened.

“Handle it?””

“I was scared.””

The confession shocked me.

Not because I believed he was fearless.

Because I had never heard him admit weakness.

“I spent my whole life thinking I was different from Damian.””

He looked toward the cage.

“But that night, I realized I wasn’t.””

A tear of anger burned in my eyes.

“My brother was lying on the street.””

“I know.””

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you walked away.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was unbearable.

I wanted him to lie.

I wanted him to give me an excuse.

Something I could argue against.

But he didn’t.

“I came back later,” Milo said.

I stared.

“What?””

“After Damian left.””

My anger turned into confusion.

“What do you mean?””

“I called emergency services anonymously.””

I froze.

“Why anonymously?””

Milo looked ashamed.

“Because I was still afraid.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“So you saved him?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I helped him survive.””

The distinction mattered.

Because he knew it.

“And then?””

“I found out who he was.””

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“And you came to Halcyon?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Milo was quiet.

Then:

“Because I wanted to make sure your family was safe.””

I stared.

“Safe?””

The word felt insulting.

“You watched us.””

“I protected you.””

“You monitored us.””

“Yes.””

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Because he didn’t fight any of it.

Damian stepped forward.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Milo isn’t your savior.””

Milo’s expression hardened.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Damian looked at me.

“He wants forgiveness.””

Milo said nothing.

“He wants to believe feeling guilty makes him different.””

Damian smiled.

“But guilt doesn’t erase choices.””

The words were cruel.

But they landed because they were true.

I looked at Milo.

“Did you ever plan to tell me?””

Silence.

That was the answer.

I nodded slowly.

“Right.””

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Another message.

This time from Kit’s number.

I opened it.

One line.

*Sabra, don’t believe him. I know why he really came into your life.*

My hands shook.

I looked up.

Milo saw the message.

His face changed.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward him.

He read it.

And for the first time…

He looked terrified.

Not of Damian.

Not of me.

Of what Kit knew.

I whispered:

“What is my brother talking about?””

Milo didn’t answer.

Rurik stepped forward.

“Milo…”

The billionaire stared at the screen.

Then quietly said:

“He found the second file.””

I frowned.

“Second file?””

Milo looked at me.

And the fear in his eyes told me something worse than the accident was waiting.

“What second file?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Damian smiled.

Because he already knew.

“The one that proves Milo didn’t enter your life to protect you.””

A pause.

“He entered it because of what your brother discovered.””

My heartbeat stopped.

Milo closed his eyes.

May you like

And whispered:

“Kit found the truth about me.””
