Chapter 7: The Woman Who Wanted To Be His Mother

I thought I understood my mother.

I thought I understood the kind of person she was.

Controlling.

Manipulative.

Someone who needed to be right.

But I had been thinking too small.

Because people like Evelyn didn't just want control over decisions.

They wanted control over lives.

And now I understood the terrifying truth.

My mother didn't want to help raise Noah.

She wanted to become the person Noah needed instead of us.

Instead of Maya.

Instead of me.

The thought made me feel sick.

A person who loved a child should want that child surrounded by both parents.

They should want laughter.

Security.

A family.

But Evelyn didn't see Noah as a child.

She saw him as something she could claim.

Something that belonged to her.

That night, Maya and I sat in Noah's room after he fell asleep.

The same room where my mother had hidden a camera.

The same room where she had stored custody papers.

The same room where she had tried to build a story about my wife.

Noah was curled up under his blanket, holding his stuffed dinosaur.

Completely unaware.

That broke my heart more than anything.

"How did we not see this?"" Maya whispered.

I looked at her.

"We trusted her.""

Maya shook her head.

"I mean all of it.""

She looked around the room.

"The camera. The documents. The planning.""

Her voice cracked.

"She was here so many times.""

I knew what she meant.

Every birthday.

Every holiday.

Every family dinner.

Evelyn had been standing inside our home while secretly working against us.

"I should have protected you.""

Maya looked at me.

"Ryan.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I should have listened.""

She was quiet.

Then she said something I wasn't expecting.

"You weren't the only one she fooled.""

I looked at her.

"She fooled everyone.""

And that was true.

My mother had built her reputation carefully.

To outsiders, Evelyn Carter was generous.

Elegant.

Helpful.

The grandmother who always showed up.

Nobody saw what happened when the doors closed.

The next morning, Detective Harris called.

"We found the person who installed the camera.""

My heart tightened.

"Who?""

There was a pause.

"Your mother's private investigator.""

I stood.

"She hired someone?""

"Yes.""

"Can we prove it?""

"We have records.""

"Then arrest her.""

The detective was quiet.

"Mr. Carter, we need more.""

"More?""

"We have evidence that she planned something. We have evidence she manipulated people.""

He paused.

"But we need to prove intent.""

I looked at the nursery.

"Intent?""

"Why she did it.""

I almost laughed.

"She wanted my son.""

"Yes.""

"But we need to prove she wanted to take him illegally.""

The detective's words frustrated me.

But I understood.

People like Evelyn survived because they rarely left obvious evidence.

They created confusion.

They created doubt.

They made cruelty look like concern.

Later that day, Claire contacted me again.

The former assistant.

The woman who had been close enough to see Evelyn's plan.

"I found something else," she said.

We met in the same coffee shop.

This time, she looked more confident.

Like she had decided she was done being afraid.

She placed a small flash drive on the table.

"What is this?""

"Files from Evelyn's computer.""

My eyes widened.

"How did you get them?""

"I worked for her.""

She looked down.

"I had access.""

"Why didn't you give these to us before?""

"Because I was scared.""

"Of her?""

Claire nodded.

"You don't understand what she's like when she feels threatened.""

I believed her.

Because I had seen it.

"What is on this?""

Claire took a deep breath.

"Her original plan.""

I stared at the drive.

"Original?""

"Before the custody petition.""

She leaned closer.

"Before she decided to make Maya look unstable.""

My stomach tightened.

"What was she planning before that?""

Claire looked at me.

"She wanted Maya gone.""

The words felt heavier than they should have.

"Gone?""

"Not dead.""

She quickly added.

"She never wrote anything like that.""

I nodded.

"Then what?""

Claire lowered her voice.

"She wanted Maya to leave.""

"How?""

"By making Ryan believe the marriage was impossible.""

I felt cold.

Again.

The same pattern.

Separate us.

Destroy trust.

Remove Maya.

Then take Noah.

"She wrote everything down?""

Claire nodded.

"She liked plans.""

That night, we opened the files.

At first, they looked ordinary.

Schedules.

Notes.

Emails.

Then we found a document titled:

*Project Family Correction*

I stared at the name.

"What does that even mean?""

Maya whispered:

"She named it.""

We opened it.

The first page was a list.

Not tasks.

People.

*Ryan: Emotional attachment. Must be redirected.*

*Maya: Primary obstacle.*

*Noah: Desired outcome.*

My hands shook.

Desired outcome.

Like my son was a business goal.

We kept reading.

Then we found the timeline.

Three years ago.

The beginning.

*Phase One: Create concern around Maya's mental state.*

*Phase Two: Encourage family members to question her ability.*

*Phase Three: Increase Ryan's dependence on outside advice.*

I stopped.

"Outside advice.""

Maya looked at me.

"Your mother.""

I nodded.

She wanted me to trust her more than my wife.

She wanted me to come to her first.

Every time Maya and I argued.

Every time we struggled.

Every time we had a problem.

Evelyn wanted to be the person I ran to.

Not my partner.

My mother.

Then we reached the final phase.

My hands froze.

*Phase Four: Remove Maya's influence permanently.*

Maya whispered:

"What does that mean?""

I didn't answer.

Because I already knew.

Then we found the attached file.

A draft statement.

Written as if from me.

A statement saying I believed Maya was unstable.

A statement saying I feared leaving Noah alone with her.

A statement that would destroy my wife's life.

But there was something else.

The signature line.

Already prepared.

My name was typed underneath.

I had never signed it.

But someone had planned for me to.

The next morning, we went to the police.

Detective Harris read through the documents silently.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Finally, he looked up.

"This changes things.""

"How?""

"This shows premeditation.""

I exhaled.

"So now what?""

"Now we bring Evelyn in for questioning.""

I nodded.

But before we could leave, his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?""

He listened.

Then looked at me.

"Mr. Carter...""

Something in his voice made my stomach drop.

"What happened?""

He ended the call.

"Your mother was already contacted by someone.""

"Who?""

"We don't know.""

"What does that mean?""

Detective Harris looked serious.

"It means she knows we found the files.""

I felt a sudden fear.

"Where is she?""

He hesitated.

"At your house.""

My blood ran cold.

"My house?""

"She said she came to collect personal belongings.""

"No.""

I grabbed my jacket.

"She isn't collecting anything.""

When we arrived, the front door was open.

Again.

Just like that night.

My heart started racing.

I ran inside.

"Maya?""

No answer.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Then I heard a voice.

From upstairs.

My mother's voice.

Calm.

Controlled.

"Ryan, I was hoping you would come alone.""

I ran toward the stairs.

"Maya!""

At the top, I stopped.

Evelyn was standing in Noah's bedroom.

Holding a small box.

Inside were my son's things.

His first drawing.

His hospital bracelet.

Photos.

Memories.

Things that belonged to us.

"What are you doing?""

She looked at me.

For the first time, she didn't pretend.

No sadness.

No concern.

No fake kindness.

Just confidence.

"I was taking what matters.""

I stared at her.

"You mean Noah.""

Her smile disappeared slightly.

"Don't make this ugly, Ryan.""

"Ugly?""

My voice shook.

"You destroyed my family.""

"No.""

She looked around the room.

"I saved it.""

Maya appeared behind me.

Her face was pale.

"Evelyn.""

My mother turned.

And then she said the words that made everything clear.

"Maya, you were always the temporary part of this family.""

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Maya looked like she had been slapped.

I stepped forward.

"Get out.""

Evelyn looked at me.

"You don't mean that.""

"I do.""

She smiled sadly.

"You'll change your mind.""

"No.""

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

"Oh, Ryan.""

I looked at her.

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out a document.

And handed it to me.

"Before you decide who the villain is, you should know what Maya did.""

My chest tightened.

"What?""

Evelyn smiled.

"The reason Noah was almost taken away three years ago wasn't because of me.""

She looked at Maya.

"It was because of a secret your wife kept.""

Maya went completely still.

I looked at her.

"What secret?""

Evelyn walked past us.

And whispered:

"Ask her why Noah's medical records were changed the night he was born.""

Then she left.

I stood there.

Unable to move.

Because Maya was crying.

May you like

And for the first time since all of this began…

She didn't deny it.
