The whispers swelled into loud murmurs.
"Wow… she faked it?"
"That’s so messed up."
"She dragged her by the hair… over a lie?"
Lila’s face turned from red to ghost-white. She gripped her phone so hard her knuckles whitened.
"It’s not fake!" she cried, voice cracking. "She’s just trying to get out of it!"

Lila opened her mouth. Closed it. She had nothing.
The boyfriend pushed through the crowd. He’d been standing at the back, silent until now.
"Lila," he said, his voice tight. "Is that true?"
Lila spun toward him. "No! Of course not! She’s lying!"
"Check the date," he said, taking the phone from her hand. He stared at the screen. Scrolled. His face fell.
"It was created yesterday," he said quietly.
The whole courtyard seemed to exhale at once.
He looked up at Lila. Hurt and anger warring in his eyes.
"You made an account… pretended to be her… sent messages to yourself… and made a scene?"

"I… I did it because I love you!" Lila blurted, tears spilling over. "I was scared she’d take you away! I wanted to ruin her before she could ruin us!"
The crowd erupted.
