Chapter 6: My Mother’s Final Confession

I played the voicemail three times.

The first time, I couldn’t believe what I heard.

The second time, I listened for a different meaning.

The third time, I realized there was no way to misunderstand it.

My mother knew.

She knew my father’s death wasn’t an accident.

She knew Ethan was connected to it.

And somehow, she had still allowed him back into our family.

I sat on Jayla’s bed holding my phone, unable to move.

“Mom?””

Her voice pulled me back.

I looked at my daughter.

She looked terrified.

Not because of the voicemail.

Because she was watching me break.

“I need to call Grandma,” I whispered.

Jayla grabbed my arm.

“Are you sure?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

The honesty surprised her.

“I’m not sure about anything anymore.””

I walked out of her room and called my mother.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

She answered.

“Claire.””

Her voice was already shaking.

She knew.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

There was silence.

A long silence.

“I knew this day would come.””

My heart tightened.

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“It isn’t.””

I walked downstairs.

“Mom, I need you to tell me the truth.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I closed my eyes.

The words almost made me angry enough to scream.

“Everyone says that.””

“Claire—”

“No.””

My voice rose.

“Everyone says they were protecting me while they let me live inside a lie.””

My mother went quiet.

Then she whispered:

“You’re right.””

That stopped me.

I didn’t expect agreement.

I expected excuses.

Defenses.

Denial.

Not this.

“Tell me what happened.””

My mother took a shaky breath.

“Your father discovered what Ethan was doing.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t know everything.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Then tell me.””

“He wasn’t stealing money.””

“Then what?””

“He was collecting information.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Your father had employees. Partners. Friends. People who trusted him.””

Her voice became quieter.

“Ethan learned their personal problems. Their weaknesses. Their fears.””

I felt sick.

“He used them.””

“Yes.””

“And my father found out.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Ethan come back?””

My mother didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

“I made a deal.””

The words froze me.

“A deal?””

“Yes.””

“With Ethan?””

“Yes.””

I stood completely still.

“What kind of deal?””

My mother started crying.

“The kind a desperate person makes when they think they have no choice.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“Why were you desperate?””

Another silence.

Then:

“Because of your father.””

I frowned.

“What does Dad have to do with this?””

“He wasn’t perfect, Claire.””

The sentence hurt.

Not because I didn’t know my father had flaws.

Everyone did.

But because she sounded like she was preparing me for something.

“What are you saying?””

She whispered:

“Your father knew Ethan was dangerous.””

“Yes.””

“He knew more than that.””

“What?””

“He knew Ethan had caused someone’s death before.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

My mother cried quietly.

“There was a young woman named Rachel.””

The same name Mark had mentioned.

My stomach dropped.

“Who was she?””

“She worked at your father’s company.””

“And?””

“Ethan became obsessed with her.””

My fingers went numb.

“Mom…”

“He convinced her he cared about her. He made her feel special.””

I closed my eyes.

Just like Jayla.

“He was older.””

“Yes.””

“Did my father know?””

“He found out.””

“What happened to Rachel?””

My mother hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She died.””

The room became silent.

“How?””

My mother’s breathing shook.

“Everyone believed it was an accident.””

My heart started racing.

“Everyone?””

“Yes.””

“But you don’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because your father told me something before he died.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

“He told me Ethan was responsible.””

A chill went through my entire body.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he report him?””

My mother cried harder.

“Because Ethan had something.””

“What?””

“Proof that your father had made mistakes.””

I frowned.

“What mistakes?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me.

“Mom.””

“Your father wasn’t involved in Rachel’s death.””

Her voice broke.

“But Ethan made it look like he was.””

I sat down.

The pieces were moving.

But they weren’t forming a picture I wanted to see.

“What does this have to do with you bringing Ethan back?””

My mother took a deep breath.

“After your father died, Ethan came to me.””

“Why?””

“He said he wanted to confess.””

I almost laughed.

“Confess?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed him?””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“No?””

“I knew what he was.””

“Then why?””

My mother whispered:

“Because he threatened you.””

My heart stopped.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“What did he threaten?””

“He said if I didn’t help him, he would reveal information about your father.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“It does when you understand what would happen.””

“What would happen?””

“He said he would tell everyone your father covered up Rachel’s death.””

I stared ahead.

“But that wasn’t true.””

“No.””

“Then why would anyone believe him?””

My mother was silent.

Because she knew.

Because she knew the answer.

“Because Ethan had evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“A recording.””

My stomach tightened.

“Of what?””

“Your father arguing with him the night Rachel died.””

I felt dizzy.

“What?””

“He edited it.””

My mother’s voice broke.

“He made your father sound guilty.””

I stood up.

“So you protected Ethan because you thought you were protecting Dad’s reputation?””

“Yes.””

“And you sacrificed my family?””

“I know.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“I know.””

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the morning looked completely normal.

People driving.

Neighbors walking dogs.

The world continuing.

While mine had fallen apart.

“Why didn’t you tell me after?””

“Because by then Ethan had another way to control us.””

“What?””

“He told me he knew something about Mark.””

I froze.

“Mark?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

My mother hesitated.

“Something about the night your father died.””

My heart started pounding.

“Everyone keeps saying Mark was there.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother whispered:

“Because Mark was the last person your father called.””

I closed my eyes.

“But that doesn’t mean anything.””

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“But Ethan made it look like it did.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Toward Jayla’s room.

Toward my husband.

Toward everything that had been hidden.

“Where is Ethan now?””

My mother went quiet.

“Mom?””

“Claire…”

“What?””

“He knows you’re asking questions.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

I froze.

“Mom?””

“What?””

“Is Ethan near you?””

My mother didn’t answer.

That silence terrified me.

“Mom.””

Then I heard something through the phone.

A man’s voice.

A voice I recognized.

“Give me the phone.””

My entire body went cold.

“Ethan?””

My mother gasped.

Then the call disconnected.

I stared at the screen.

Jayla came downstairs.

“Mom?””

I couldn’t speak.

She saw my face.

“What happened?””

I slowly looked toward the front door.

Because at that exact moment…

Someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Not a neighbor.

Not a friend.

Someone who wanted me to know they were there.

Jayla grabbed my hand.

“Mom…”

The knocking came again.

And then a familiar voice called from the other side.

“Claire.””

My blood turned cold.

May you like

It was Ethan.

“I think it’s time we finally talked.””
