Chapter 9: The Man Who Chose The Truth

Nobody spoke.

The document remained open on the screen.

The words felt impossible.

*Phase Two begins after Derek Caldwell is removed by his own board.*

And beneath it:

*Approved by: Thomas Reed.*

Derek stared at the signature.

The room was silent except for the distant sound of the building’s emergency systems.

A low mechanical hum.

A warning.

A countdown.

A reminder that time was running out.

But Derek no longer cared about the countdown.

Not because the threat was gone.

Because something worse had appeared.

The person standing beside him.

Thomas Reed.

His friend.

His advisor.

The man who had helped him build everything.

Thomas looked at the screen.

Then at Derek.

"Derek...""

Derek raised his hand.

Not aggressively.

Just enough to stop him.

For the first time in twenty years, he did not know what Thomas was about to say.

And that frightened him.

Marcus stepped forward.

"I knew it.""

Derek looked at him.

"You knew?""

Marcus shook his head.

"Not that he was behind it.""

He pointed at the document.

"But I knew there was something missing.""

Thomas looked at him.

"Marcus.""

"No.""

Marcus's voice hardened.

"You were always one step ahead.""

Thomas looked hurt.

"I was trying to help.""

Derek finally spoke.

"Then explain.""

Thomas took a breath.

"I can.""

"Then do it.""

Thomas looked around the room.

At Derek.

At Marcus.

At Emily.

Then he slowly sat down.

"I signed that document.""

Nobody moved.

The admission was worse than the accusation.

Marcus clenched his fists.

"Derek, you need to hear the whole thing.""

Derek looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because the signature doesn't mean what you think.""

Thomas nodded.

"It doesn't.""

Derek stared.

"Then what does it mean?""

Thomas looked at the screen.

"It means I was trying to trap the person who created the plan.""

A long silence followed.

Derek didn't react.

Not yet.

"You're saying you approved a plan to remove me...""

"Yes.""

"And that was supposed to help me?""

Thomas nodded.

"I needed them to believe I was on their side.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

Thomas looked at him.

"Because someone was watching.""

Derek's expression remained cold.

"Someone?""

Thomas pointed at the document.

"Look at the access logs.""

Emily moved closer.

She opened the metadata.

A list appeared.

The file had been created six weeks earlier.

Modified repeatedly.

Different users.

Different locations.

Different devices.

Then Thomas pointed.

"Look at the final modification.""

Derek leaned forward.

The timestamp.

The user.

The access point.

His eyes narrowed.

"The boardroom.""

Thomas nodded.

"Someone used the boardroom terminal.""

Marcus frowned.

"But only board members have access.""

Thomas looked at Derek.

"Exactly.""

Derek understood.

The document wasn't just evidence.

It was a trap.

Someone had taken Thomas's signature and placed it there.

Made it appear as approval.

Made it appear that Thomas planned everything.

Derek looked at Thomas.

"But you really did sign it.""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Thomas looked exhausted.

"Because the only way to find the person behind this was to make them believe they had won.""

Six weeks earlier.

Thomas Reed had noticed the first warning sign.

Not money.

Not files.

Behavior.

Executives started changing.

Small things.

A delayed response.

A private meeting that wasn't scheduled.

A decision made without proper approval.

Nothing large enough to accuse anyone.

Nothing obvious enough to stop.

But Thomas had spent decades inside aviation.

He understood systems.

And he understood people.

When a machine failed, there was usually a reason.

When people started hiding things, there was always a reason.

He began quietly investigating.

Then he found the acquisition plan.

A strategy designed to weaken Caldwell Aviation before a takeover.

The buyer?

Bradley Mercer.

The inside connection?

Unknown.

Thomas discovered one thing that scared him.

The attacker knew everything.

Not just company information.

Personal information.

Family details.

Private conversations.

Things only a few people knew.

Then Thomas found something worse.

A plan to remove Derek from the company.

Not through a hostile takeover.

Through a board decision.

A forced resignation.

The documents claimed Derek had abused his power.

Misused funds.

Ignored company policies.

Every accusation carefully prepared.

Thomas realized the enemy wasn't trying to steal the company.

They were trying to make Derek look unfit to lead it.

So Thomas created his own plan.

He signed the document.

Let it circulate.

Let the attacker believe he had joined them.

Then he waited.

But someone discovered the plan.

And that person was Marcus.

Back in the office, Derek looked at Thomas.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Thomas looked down.

"Because if you knew, you would have acted.""

"And?""

"And the person behind this would disappear.""

Derek was silent.

Thomas continued.

"I needed them confident.""

"Confident enough to make mistakes.""

Thomas nodded.

"Exactly.""

Emily looked at the files.

"There are more documents.""

Everyone turned.

She opened another folder.

This one was titled:

*Internal Removal Procedure.*

Her face changed as she read.

"What?""

Derek asked.

Emily looked at him.

"They planned everything.""

She scrolled.

"First, create evidence.""

Another page.

"Then isolate you from your trusted people.""

Another.

"Then create public pressure.""

Another.

"Then force the board vote.""

Marcus looked sick.

"They weren't just buying the company.""

Derek nodded.

"They were controlling the outcome.""

Thomas looked at him.

"And they were close.""

Derek looked toward the office windows.

"How close?""

Nobody answered.

Then Emily noticed something.

"Wait.""

She enlarged a document.

A list of names appeared.

Derek read it.

Board members.

Executives.

Investors.

People involved in the planned vote.

Then he saw it.

One name highlighted.

Bradley Mercer.

But next to him was another name.

A name Derek knew.

A name that made everything more complicated.

Marcus saw it too.

"Derek...""

He stopped.

Because he didn't need to say the name.

Everyone saw it.

The person coordinating the board removal.

The person communicating with Bradley.

The person who had access to everything.

Was not Thomas.

Was not Marcus.

Was not Emily.

It was:

*Richard Blake.*

The senior board member Derek had personally recruited fifteen years earlier.

The man who always defended the company.

The man who always said:

"We protect what Derek built.""

Derek slowly closed his eyes.

Another trusted person.

Another betrayal.

Thomas spoke quietly.

"Now you understand why I couldn't tell you.""

Derek opened his eyes.

"Because you didn't know who to trust.""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

The building lights suddenly returned.

The countdown disappeared.

The lockdown ended.

Everyone looked up.

A moment later, the elevator notification sounded.

Someone was coming up.

Thomas checked the security panel.

His face changed.

"Derek.""

"What?""

"The board.""

Marcus looked at the screen.

"They're here.""

Derek stood.

"Why?""

Thomas looked at him.

"Because they weren't waiting for tomorrow.""

The elevator doors opened.

Richard Blake walked onto the executive floor.

Behind him were four board members.

And Bradley Mercer.

Richard smiled when he saw Derek.

A calm smile.

The kind of smile that belonged to someone who believed the ending was already written.

"Well.""

Richard adjusted his jacket.

"I was wondering when you would find out.""

Nobody spoke.

Derek stared at him.

"You knew.""

Richard smiled.

"Of course I knew.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"You framed us.""

Richard looked almost disappointed.

"No.""

He glanced around the room.

"I simply gave everyone what they wanted.""

Derek's eyes narrowed.

"And what was that?""

Richard looked at him.

"Change.""

A pause.

"You built a great company, Derek.""

He smiled.

"But you forgot one thing.""

"What?""

Richard stepped closer.

"Every company eventually belongs to the people who know how to take it.""

Bradley stood behind him, silent.

Derek looked at both men.

Then at the documents.

Then back at Richard.

"You think you won.""

Richard smiled.

"I know I did.""

He placed a folder on the table.

"Emergency board resolution.""

Derek looked at it.

Richard continued:

"The vote to remove you begins in ten minutes.""

Silence.

Then Derek smiled.

A small smile.

The first one all day.

Richard noticed.

"What?""

Derek picked up the flash drive.

"You made one mistake.""

Richard frowned.

"And what is that?""

Derek looked at Thomas.

Then Marcus.

Then Emily.

"You thought I was fighting alone.""

Richard's expression changed slightly.

For the first time.

A crack.

A moment of uncertainty.

Derek connected the drive to the main screen.

The documents appeared.

Richard's face lost color.

Because he understood.

The evidence wasn't hidden anymore.

The plan wasn't secret anymore.

And for the first time that day...

the person controlling the game realized he was no longer the only player.

But before anyone could speak, Bradley's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face changed.

He looked at Richard.

"It's already happening.""

Derek watched carefully.

"What is?""

Bradley slowly lowered the phone.

"The board isn't the only vote.""

A pause.

"The investors are voting too.""

Derek stepped forward.

"Voting on what?""

Bradley looked directly at him.

And whispered:

"Whether Caldwell Aviation survives.""

The room went silent.

Because Derek finally understood.

The battle was never just for his position.

May you like

It was for the future of everything he built.

And sunrise was coming.
