Chapter 5: The Secret Marcus Tried To Protect

Derek Caldwell stood frozen at the gate.

People moved around him.

Suitcases rolled across the polished airport floor.

Families reunited.

Business travelers rushed toward meetings.

Announcements echoed from the ceiling.

But Derek heard none of it.

His eyes remained fixed on the sentence inside the envelope.

*Your brother didn't betray you. He was trying to warn you.*

For several seconds, he simply stared.

Because the message did something he had not expected.

It created doubt.

And doubt was dangerous.

Anger was simple.

Anger gave you direction.

Anger told you who the enemy was.

But doubt forced you to look closer.

To question what you thought you knew.

Thomas stood beside him.

"Derek?""

No response.

"Derek, what does it say?""

Derek folded the paper.

Then opened it again.

Like somehow the words might change.

They didn't.

Finally, he handed it over.

Thomas read it.

His eyebrows tightened.

"Who sent this?""

Derek looked at the envelope.

"No idea.""

"Did anyone see who left it?""

The flight attendant shook his head.

"I was told it was already here when I came onboard.""

Thomas looked at Derek.

"That means someone had access before boarding.""

Derek nodded.

"And knew exactly where I would be sitting.""

The two men exchanged a look.

The same thought appeared in both their minds.

This was bigger than a seat.

Much bigger.

Twenty minutes later, Derek sat inside a private lounge at the airport.

No reporters.

No passengers.

No curious eyes.

Just him, Thomas, and a growing pile of questions.

Thomas placed his tablet on the table.

"I pulled Marcus's activity logs.""

Derek looked up.

"And?""

Thomas hesitated.

"You're not going to like it.""

Derek leaned back.

"At this point, I don't think there's anything you can show me that will surprise me.""

Thomas turned the tablet around.

The screen showed a timeline.

Marcus Caldwell.

Executive access.

Multiple files opened.

Multiple systems accessed.

Multiple internal communications reviewed.

Derek scanned the information.

"These are all from the last month.""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

"Because most of the access was technically allowed.""

Derek frowned.

"Allowed?""

"Marcus is your vice chairman. He has permission.""

"Then what's the problem?""

Thomas pointed at the screen.

"The timing.""

Derek studied the entries.

Every access happened late at night.

Usually between midnight and four in the morning.

"Why would he work those hours?""

Thomas didn't answer.

Derek looked at him.

"Thomas.""

The older man sighed.

"Because Marcus wasn't working.""

"What?""

"He was searching.""

Derek's expression changed.

"Searching for what?""

Thomas tapped the screen.

"That's what I couldn't figure out.""

He opened another file.

Then another.

Then another.

"They weren't business reports.""

Derek leaned forward.

"What were they?""

"Security reports.""

A silence followed.

Derek looked confused.

"Security?""

"Internal threats.""

Thomas continued.

"Marcus accessed employee records, executive communication logs, financial transfers.""

Derek stared at the screen.

"Why?""

Thomas lowered his voice.

"Because he thought someone inside the company was planning something.""

The room became quiet.

Derek looked away.

The image of Marcus standing beside Bradley returned to his mind.

A brother hiding information.

A brother meeting with a rival.

A brother secretly investigating the company.

None of it made sense.

Unless Marcus had known something Derek didn't.

"When did he tell you this?""

"He didn't.""

Derek looked at him.

"You knew?""

Thomas nodded slowly.

"I suspected.""

"You suspected my brother was investigating my company, and you didn't tell me?""

Thomas looked down.

"I suspected Marcus was trying to protect you.""

Derek's jaw tightened.

"That's not your decision to make.""

"I know.""

Thomas accepted the criticism.

"But I also know your brother.""

Derek looked at him.

"He has always been reckless.""

Thomas nodded.

"But never disloyal.""

The words stayed in the air.

Because Derek knew they were true.

Marcus was younger.

More emotional.

More impulsive.

But betrayal?

No.

That didn't fit.

Not the brother who had slept on Derek's couch when they were building the company.

Not the brother who had worked three jobs to help pay for Derek's first aircraft lease.

Not the brother who had once said:

"If this company succeeds, it succeeds because we did it together.""

Derek closed his eyes.

Then opened them.

"What was Marcus looking for?""

Thomas opened another file.

"This.""

A document appeared.

A list of names.

Derek recognized several immediately.

Executives.

Department heads.

Managers.

People in positions of power.

At the bottom was one name highlighted.

Bradley Mercer.

Derek stared.

"Marcus was investigating him.""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Thomas looked at him.

"Because he believed Bradley wasn't trying to buy the company.""

Derek waited.

"He believed Bradley was trying to destroy it first.""

Later that afternoon, Derek arrived at Caldwell Aviation headquarters.

The building stood in downtown New York like a symbol of everything he had created.

Forty floors of glass and steel.

A company that started with one borrowed aircraft.

A company that almost failed more times than it succeeded.

Derek remembered sleeping in the office during the early years.

Eating cold food at midnight.

Calling airports himself because nobody knew his name.

Everyone saw the success.

Nobody saw the years before it.

The elevator doors opened.

The executive floor was unusually quiet.

Too quiet.

Employees looked up when Derek walked out.

Some smiled.

Some immediately looked away.

Derek noticed.

Fear.

Not respect.

Fear.

Something had happened while he was gone.

His assistant, Emily Parker, rushed toward him.

"Mr. Caldwell.""

Derek stopped.

"Emily.""

She looked nervous.

"You're back early.""

"I was supposed to be back today.""

"Yes, but...""

She stopped.

Derek studied her.

"But what?""

Emily lowered her voice.

"There was a meeting this morning.""

"What meeting?""

"An emergency board meeting.""

Derek's expression changed.

"Who called it?""

Emily hesitated.

"Marcus.""

The answer hurt more than he expected.

"What happened?""

"I don't know.""

"Emily.""

She looked around before speaking.

"They asked everyone to leave the room except the board members.""

Derek stepped closer.

"Who was there?""

Emily swallowed.

"Marcus.""

A pause.

"Bradley Mercer.""

Another pause.

"And three outside investors.""

Derek felt the pieces moving again.

"Where is Marcus now?""

Emily looked toward the corner offices.

"His office.""

Derek walked away.

Thomas followed.

"Derek.""

"No.""

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"I'm done guessing.""

They reached Marcus's office.

The door was slightly open.

Derek pushed it.

Inside, his brother stood by the window.

He looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Not confident.

Exhausted.

Marcus turned.

For a moment, neither brother spoke.

Then Marcus whispered:

"You shouldn't be here.""

Derek closed the door behind him.

"That's an interesting thing to say.""

Marcus looked at Thomas.

Then back at Derek.

"You know.""

It wasn't a question.

Derek placed the envelope on the desk.

"You tell me.""

Marcus stared at it.

His face changed.

"You got the message.""

Derek froze.

"You sent it?""

Marcus didn't answer.

That was enough.

"Marcus.""

His brother looked away.

"I was trying to protect you.""

Derek stepped closer.

"By letting me think you betrayed me?""

"I didn't have a choice.""

"There is always a choice.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Not when the person you're fighting controls everything.""

Derek's eyes narrowed.

"Who?""

Marcus looked at the office door.

Then lowered his voice.

"The person who has been inside our company for months.""

Derek waited.

Marcus finally said the words he had been afraid to say.

"The person who knows every secret we have.""

A pause.

"The person who knows how to make it look like I did it.""

Derek felt his heartbeat quicken.

"Who is it?""

Marcus looked directly at him.

And for the first time in years, Derek saw fear in his brother's eyes.

"It's someone you trust.""

The room went silent.

"Someone who sits at your table.""

Marcus swallowed.

"Someone who helped you build this company.""

Derek stared at him.

May you like

Then Marcus whispered the name.

And the name was one Derek never expected to hear.
