Chapter 9: The Doctor's Confession

Maya read the message three times.

Ask Dr. Reed what happened to the other baby.

She looked up at Isaiah.

"What other baby?""

His expression tightened.

"I don't know.""

Jordan took the phone and examined the photograph.

"That's Samuel Reed. I'm certain of it. My grandfather kept several photographs of him in the archive.""

Elena came out of the nursing home, moving carefully with her cane.

"What's wrong?""

Maya handed her the phone.

Elena studied the image.

When she saw the doctor, her face went white.

"That's him.""

Isaiah turned toward her.

"You recognize him?""

Elena nodded.

"He was in the room when I gave birth to Grace.""

Maya felt her stomach twist.

"Why would he be treating her now?""

Elena shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Isaiah looked at the address.

"We're going to the clinic.""

Maya stared at the message again.

"Alone?""

"No," Isaiah said firmly.

"Nobody is going anywhere alone.""

He took out his phone and called Eleanor.

Within minutes, she had arranged for the foundation's attorney to meet them at the clinic. She also advised them to preserve the messages and photographs and to avoid confronting anyone until they had secured the original records.

Maya agreed.

But she knew one thing with absolute certainty.

She wasn't going to wait another thirty-three years for the truth.

The clinic was a low brick building beside a public library.

A faded sign identified it as the Reed Family Medical Center. Through the windows, Maya could see patients sitting in rows of plastic chairs, reading magazines or staring at their phones.

The ordinary setting felt almost insulting.

How could a place so unremarkable contain the answer to a mystery that had destroyed her family?

At the reception desk, Isaiah gave his name.

"We're here to see Dr. Samuel Reed.""

The receptionist checked the appointment schedule.

"Do you have an appointment?""

"No. But please tell him Isaiah Carter is here.""

The receptionist looked at the computer again.

Then she picked up the telephone.

A moment later, she hung up.

"Dr. Reed will see you.""

Maya's heart began to pound.

They followed a nurse down a narrow corridor and entered an office lined with medical books. A man in his sixties stood behind a desk, reading a chart.

His hair was almost entirely white. A pair of reading glasses rested low on his nose.

When he looked up and saw Isaiah, he dropped the chart.

"Isaiah.""

Isaiah stood in the doorway.

"Samuel.""

The doctor looked toward Elena.

His face drained of color.

Then he looked at Maya.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to speak.

Finally, he whispered, "So she found you.""

Maya stepped forward.

"You know who I am?""

Samuel Reed sat down slowly.

"Yes.""

"Do you know where my sister is?""

He closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

Maya's hands began to tremble.

"Then tell me.""

The doctor looked toward the closed door.

"Please sit down.""

"No.""

He swallowed.

"Your sister is alive.""

Maya felt the room tilt.

"Where?""

"Not here.""

"Then where is she?""

Samuel leaned forward.

"Before I answer, you need to understand something about the night you were born.""

Isaiah's voice was cold.

"We already know what Thomas did.""

"No," Samuel said.

"You know what he wanted you to believe.""

Elena gripped the arm of her chair.

"What does that mean?""

Samuel removed his glasses.

"When you delivered your first daughter, there were complications. You lost a dangerous amount of blood. The hospital was understaffed, and Thomas insisted that his private physician oversee your care.""

"You," Elena whispered.

Samuel nodded.

"I was responsible for both mother and child.""

"Then why did you tell me Grace had died?""

Samuel looked down.

"Because Thomas ordered me to.""

Maya stepped closer to the desk.

"And you obeyed?""

"I was young. I had a family. Thomas controlled the hospital's funding, and he threatened to have my medical license revoked if I refused.""

Isaiah's expression hardened.

"So you helped him steal a child.""

Samuel flinched.

"Yes.""

Elena's eyes filled.

"You watched me hold my baby, and you knew you were going to take her away.""

Samuel's voice broke.

"Yes.""

Elena rose from her chair.

"How could you?""

"I have asked myself that question every day for thirty-three years.""

"That's not an answer!""

"No," he said quietly.

"It isn't.""

He opened a drawer and removed a thick folder.

"I kept copies of the original medical records. I knew one day someone might need them.""

Maya took the folder.

Inside were hospital notes, transfer documents, and a birth record bearing Elena's name.

The first page listed one child.

The second page listed two.

Maya stopped breathing.

She turned the page toward Isaiah.

"Dad.""

He looked at the document.

His hands began to shake.

There were two birth entries.

One for Grace, born at 2:14 a.m.

And one for Maya, born at 2:37 a.m.

Twins.

Maya stared at the paper.

"We're twins?""

Elena covered her mouth.

Samuel nodded.

"Yes.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Maya looked at the photograph of Grace on her phone.

The resemblance had been unmistakable.

Now she understood why.

She hadn't simply found a sister.

She had found the other half of her birth.

Isaiah lowered himself into a chair.

"They told me you were born alone.""

Samuel's face tightened.

"Thomas arranged for you to be separated before either parent was fully informed. He wanted Elena to believe one child had died, and he wanted Isaiah to believe Elena had died. He believed that if he controlled the story each of you heard, he could control what happened next.""

Maya felt a wave of nausea.

"And the adoption?""

"Margaret took Grace. You remained with Isaiah.""

Elena stared at the doctor.

"Why did he keep Maya with Isaiah?""

Samuel hesitated.

"Because Thomas believed Isaiah would eventually become successful. He thought Maya could be raised by her father without bringing scandal to the Whitmore family.""

Isaiah's face hardened.

"He thought I was poor enough to be controlled.""

Samuel nodded.

"Yes.""

Maya's voice trembled.

"And Grace?""

"Thomas believed Margaret could give her a life that would keep her connected to the Whitmore family while keeping her mother away.""

Elena sank back into her chair.

Two daughters.

One mother.

One father.

And a wealthy man who had decided that the children could be divided like pieces of property.

Maya pressed her hands against the desk.

"Where is Grace now?""

Samuel looked at her.

"She's alive, but she has been struggling with her health. She has been receiving treatment here for several years.""

"What kind of treatment?""

"An autoimmune disorder. It's manageable, but she has had serious complications.""

Maya's heart clenched.

"Does she know about us?""

Samuel nodded slowly.

"She knows she was adopted. She knows that Margaret concealed information about her birth. But she doesn't know the full truth.""

"Why not?""

"Because she asked me not to tell her anything until she was ready.""

Maya looked at the photograph again.

"Then how did someone know where she was?""

Samuel's expression changed.

He glanced toward the window.

"I believe someone has been monitoring her.""

Isaiah stood.

"Who?""

Samuel hesitated.

"Richard Whitmore.""

Maya closed her eyes.

Of course.

The man who had spent years protecting his father's secrets had continued the work.

"Why would he monitor Grace?"" Jordan demanded.

Samuel looked at him.

"Because she may be the only person who can prove what happened.""

He opened another folder.

Inside were financial records linking Richard to payments made to the private clinic, the adoption agency, and Margaret Bell.

There were also copies of letters written by Thomas.

One contained a sentence that made Maya's blood run cold.

If either daughter ever learns the truth, the inheritance must be redirected to the foundation. Neither child can be allowed to inherit control of the family estate.

Maya looked at Isaiah.

"Why would he do that?""

Samuel's voice was quiet.

"Because Thomas believed the truth would destroy the family he spent his life building.""

Jordan shook his head.

"He cared more about his estate than his daughters.""

Samuel nodded.

"Yes.""

Maya turned back to the doctor.

"Tell us where Grace is.""

Samuel took a long breath.

"She was here yesterday. She left after receiving a message from someone claiming to be her birth mother.""

Elena froze.

"I never sent her a message.""

Samuel looked at her.

"I know.""

Maya felt a chill spread through her.

"What did the message say?""

Samuel reached for a printout.

It contained a short text.

Your biological mother wants to meet you. Come to the old Whitmore estate tomorrow at noon. Come alone.

The message had been sent from a prepaid phone.

Maya checked the time.

It was eleven twenty.

"Today," she whispered.

Isaiah grabbed his keys.

"We're going to the estate.""

Samuel stood.

"Wait. There's more.""

He removed a final document from the folder.

It was a medical authorization form signed by Thomas Whitmore.

The form permitted the transfer of a newborn child to a private residence under the supervision of Margaret Bell.

But the name of the authorized guardian had been crossed out.

Beneath it, in a different handwriting, was a second name.

Ruth Carter.

Isaiah stared at the paper.

"No.""

Maya looked at him.

"What is it?""

He took the document with trembling hands.

"Ruth was supposed to take Grace.""

Samuel nodded.

"Thomas changed the arrangement at the last minute. Margaret had already agreed to adopt the baby, but Ruth objected. She believed the child should remain with her biological family.""

Isaiah's face went pale.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"Because Thomas threatened to have her arrested. He told her that if she revealed what happened, he would make sure you lost Maya, too.""

Maya looked at the document.

"Then Ruth was the one who tried to save Grace.""

"Yes," Samuel said.

"She was the only person who openly challenged Thomas.""

Isaiah sat down again, his face buried in his hands.

For years, he had remembered Ruth as the woman who gave him shelter when he had nowhere else to go.

He had never known she had tried to save his daughter.

Maya reached for his shoulder.

"Dad.""

He looked up.

"I thought I was helping people because Thomas gave me a chance. But Ruth was the person who taught me what kindness really meant.""

Maya squeezed his hand.

"You learned from both of them. One gave you an opportunity. The other showed you what to do with it.""

Isaiah looked at her.

For a moment, the grief in his eyes softened.

Then Samuel spoke again.

"There's something else you need to know about Grace.""

Maya turned.

"What?""

Samuel looked at Elena.

"She has been searching for her biological family for years. She recently received the results of a DNA test.""

Elena stood abruptly.

"What results?""

Samuel took a sealed envelope from his desk.

"She knows she has a twin sister.""

Maya's breath caught.

"Does she know my name?""

Samuel nodded.

"Yes.""

Maya stared at the envelope.

"Then why hasn't she contacted me?""

The doctor looked at her with deep sadness.

"Because the person who sent her the test results told her something else.""

"What?""

Samuel hesitated.

"She was told that her twin sister died when she was a child.""

Maya felt the world go silent.

Isaiah gripped the desk.

Elena began to cry.

And Jordan whispered, "My father.""

Samuel nodded.

"Richard has been sending Grace false information for years. He convinced her that her biological family was dangerous and that contacting them would put her at risk.""

Maya's hands curled into fists.

"Then we need to find her before she goes to the estate.""

Samuel checked his watch.

"It's almost noon.""

Isaiah headed for the door.

Maya followed.

But as she reached the corridor, her phone rang.

An unknown number.

She answered immediately.

"Grace?""

A woman's voice came through, trembling.

"Maya?""

Maya stopped walking.

"Yes. Is that you?""

A sob.

"I've been looking for you.""

Maya pressed the phone against her ear.

"I've been looking for you, too.""

There was a long silence.

Then Grace whispered, "I'm at the Whitmore estate.""

Maya's heart dropped.

"Get out of there. It's a trap.""

"I know.""

"Then leave!""

"I can't.""

"Why not?""

Grace's voice broke.

"Because Richard Whitmore is standing in front of me, and he says he has proof that my real mother abandoned me.""

Maya closed her eyes.

"Grace, listen to me. Your mother is alive. She's with us. Her name is Elena.""

A shaky breath.

"That's what I wanted to believe.""

"You don't have to believe me yet. Just get somewhere safe.""

Grace was silent.

Then she whispered, "There's something else.""

"What?""

"He has a gun.""

Maya froze.

In the background, she heard Richard Whitmore's voice.

"Put the phone down, Grace.""

Grace began to cry.

"Maya, if I don't get out of here, I need you to know that I never hated you.""

The call cut off.

May you like

Maya stared at the phone.

Then she ran.
