Chapter 5: The Friend Who Sold My Future

I watched the security image until my eyes started to hurt.

Daniel Reed.

My friend.

My employee.

The man who had sat beside me in conference rooms, celebrated our victories, and told people he believed in my vision.

Standing inside my office at midnight.

Carrying a folder with my name on it.

For years, I had trusted Daniel with things I didn’t even tell my closest friends.

I knew his daughter’s birthday.

I knew his mother was recovering from surgery.

I knew he hated black coffee but drank it anyway during late-night meetings because he thought it made him look more serious.

I knew everything about him.

Or at least, I thought I did.

“Michael?””

Laura’s voice pulled me back.

She was staring at the phone in my hand.

“Who is it?””

I turned the screen toward her.

The moment she saw Daniel’s face, her expression changed.

“You know him?””

I looked at her.

“You don’t?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

That answer bothered me.

Because it meant Nathan’s plan had more layers than I understood.

Daniel wasn’t connected to Laura.

He wasn’t someone from her life.

He was someone from mine.

The enemy wasn’t just outside my family.

He was inside everything I built.

I barely slept.

At 5:30 a.m., I was already sitting in my car outside Carter & Vale.

The building lights were still mostly off.

The city was quiet.

The same building that once represented everything I had achieved now felt like a place where someone had been secretly digging a hole beneath me.

I watched employees arrive one by one.

People who trusted me.

People whose jobs depended on me.

And I wondered how long someone had been planning to take it all away.

At 7:00, David arrived.

He walked toward my car and immediately knew something was wrong.

“You found something.””

I handed him the security image.

He stared at it.

Then looked back at me.

“Daniel?””

I nodded.

David rubbed his forehead.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

I looked at the building.

“But I’m sure enough to be careful.””

He sat in the passenger seat.

“What do you want to do?””

“Nothing.””

He frowned.

“Nothing?””

“Not yet.””

I started the engine.

“If Daniel thinks we don’t know, he’ll make another move.””

David studied me.

“You’re trying to catch him.””

“I’m trying to find out how deep this goes.””

We didn’t confront Daniel.

That was the hardest thing I had ever done.

Every part of me wanted to walk into his office and demand answers.

I wanted to ask him how he could betray me.

How much Nathan paid him.

How long he had been lying.

But emotion was exactly what people like Nathan used.

They pushed you until you reacted.

Then they controlled the outcome.

So I waited.

At 10:15 a.m., Daniel walked into my office.

Exactly as he always did.

Same expensive suit.

Same confident smile.

Same casual attitude.

“Morning, Michael.””

I looked up from my desk.

“Daniel.””

He sat down.

“I heard you canceled the investor meeting.””

“I did.””

“Everything okay?””

There it was.

The question.

The performance.

I watched his face carefully.

“I’m reviewing some internal matters.””

He nodded.

“Anything I should know?””

I almost laughed.

Instead, I leaned back.

“Should there be?””

A tiny change crossed his face.

A pause.

Barely noticeable.

But I saw it.

“I’m just asking.””

“Of course.””

The room went quiet.

Then Daniel smiled.

“You seem stressed.””

“I’ve had a difficult week.””

“I heard.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You heard?””

He looked away for half a second.

“People talk.””

Interesting.

“People talk about my marriage?””

He shifted.

“I mean… about what happened at the gym.””

I stared at him.

“How do you know exactly what happened?””

His smile faded slightly.

“Michael.””

“No.””

I stood.

“How do you know?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

And that was when I knew.

He knew too much.

“I have friends.””

“Where?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I walked to the window.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“How long have you been working with Nathan?””

The silence that followed was louder than any confession.

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But it changed.

I turned around.

And for the first time in six years, I saw fear in Daniel’s eyes.

“What did you say?””

I didn’t blink.

“You heard me.””

He stood slowly.

“Michael, I don’t know what you think you know, but—”

“Sit down.””

My voice was calm.

Cold.

He stopped.

“I said sit.””

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he slowly sat back down.

An hour later, David called me.

“Michael.””

His voice was urgent.

“I found something.””

I left my office immediately.

When I entered the conference room, David had several documents spread across the table.

“Look.””

I picked up the first page.

A bank transfer.

My eyes moved to the amount.

My stomach tightened.

“Two hundred thousand dollars?””

“From an offshore account.””

“To Daniel?””

David nodded.

“Three months ago.””

Three months.

The same time Laura said Nathan started becoming interested in my company.

I picked up another document.

Another transfer.

Then another.

All connected.

“Who sent the money?””

David pointed.

“Nathan Brooks.””

I stared at the name.

“So Daniel wasn’t helping him.””

David looked at me.

“He was working for him.””

The words landed heavily.

A memory flashed through my mind.

Daniel sitting in my office last year.

Telling me:

“You need to be careful, Michael. Success attracts people who want what you have.””

I remembered laughing.

I told him:

“That’s why I have people I trust.””

People.

Like him.

I felt something inside me go quiet.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

That evening, I went home earlier than usual.

Ethan was sitting at the kitchen table doing homework.

When he saw me, he smiled.

“Dad!””

He ran over.

I caught him.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

The company.

Laura.

Nathan.

Daniel.

All of it.

I was just his father.

The person he needed.

“Did you have a good day?””

He nodded.

“Grandma called.””

I froze.

“Grandma?””

“Yeah.””

My mother.

She must have heard about what happened.

“What did she say?””

Ethan shrugged.

“She said everything will be okay.””

I smiled sadly.

Adults always said that to children.

Even when they weren’t sure.

After dinner, I tucked Ethan into bed.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you and Mommy going to get divorced?””

I sat beside him.

I knew this conversation would come eventually.

I just wished it wasn’t so soon.

“I don’t know.””

He looked scared.

“But you’ll still be my dad?””

I immediately answered.

“Always.””

He nodded.

“Even if you’re not married?””

“Yes.””

He thought about it.

Then whispered:

“Good.””

I kissed his forehead.

When I walked out of his room, I had made a decision.

I could lose my marriage.

I could lose my company.

But I would not let anyone destroy my son’s sense of safety.

Later that night, Laura found me in my office.

“You found Daniel.””

I looked up.

She stood in the doorway.

“How do you know?””

“Because Nathan called me.””

My expression changed.

“What did he say?””

She looked terrified.

“He knows.””

“Knows what?””

“That you found out.””

I stood.

“How?””

“He said someone inside the company warned him.””

My jaw tightened.

“Daniel.””

She nodded.

“Probably.””

I walked toward the desk.

“This is over.””

Laura looked at me.

“What?””

“Nathan’s plan. Daniel’s betrayal. All of it.””

Her face changed.

“Michael…”

“No.””

I opened my laptop.

“I’m reporting this.””

Her expression turned pale.

“To the police?””

“Yes.””

She stepped forward.

“Wait.””

I stopped.

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because Nathan has something.””

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“He told me if I went against him, he would release evidence that makes it look like I helped him steal from you.””

I stared at her.

“Did you?””

Her eyes filled.

“I answered his questions. I gave him information. I was angry and stupid and I thought…”

She covered her face.

“I thought he cared about me.””

The honesty hurt.

But before I could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

Nathan.

“Hello, Michael.””

My entire body went still.

“How did you get my number?””

A quiet laugh.

“You still don’t understand how much access I have.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where is Daniel?””

“Probably hiding.””

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then:

“I want what you built.””

I looked at Laura.

She looked terrified.

Nathan continued.

“And tomorrow morning, you’re going to receive a package.””

“What’s in it?””

Another pause.

A smile I couldn’t see but could hear.

“The reason your wife was never the biggest betrayal.””

The call ended.

I stood there in silence.

Then my computer screen lit up.

A new email.

One attachment.

A video file.

The name alone made my blood run cold.

*MICHAEL_CARTER_ORIGINAL_PARTNER.mp4*

Because I had never told Nathan about the one person who helped me start my company.

May you like

The one person whose name had disappeared from every record.

The one person I had spent years trying to forget.
