Chapter 8: The Daughter He Chose to Steal

Daniel read the message three times.

Then he tore the photograph from my hands.

"Absolutely not.""

Brenda stood near the doorway, wringing her hands.

"That's what he wants. If you don't take Emma to him, he'll make sure nobody ever sees Lily again.""

Daniel rounded on her.

"You expect us to hand a child over to a man who stole her identity?""

"I expect you to understand what he's capable of.""

"He's our father!"" I shouted.

The words came out before I could stop them.

Everyone turned toward me.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Our father.

The man who had taught us to ride bicycles, who had carried us on his shoulders during summer parades, who had tucked us into bed when thunderstorms shook the windows.

The man whose funeral I had attended while my mother clutched my hand and whispered that everything would eventually be all right.

He had been alive.

He had been hiding.

And he had been threatening children.

I looked at Brenda.

"Why did you bring this photograph to us?""

"Because I want this to end.""

"Then tell us everything.""

She sank onto a cardboard box.

"Eight years ago, Robert discovered that Rebecca was pregnant. He knew her father had left her a trust fund, but he also knew she wouldn't be able to access it until her daughter turned eighteen.""

"How did he know about the trust?"" Daniel asked.

"He had worked with Rebecca's father. He knew the family had established a trust for the first granddaughter.""

I looked at Emma.

"Why would my father care about a child he barely knew?""

Brenda gave me a tired look.

"Because he was drowning in debt. His business had collapsed, and he owed money to people who weren't willing to wait. He believed controlling the trust was the only way to save himself.""

"How could he control a trust that belonged to a child?""

"By making sure the child was raised by people he could manipulate.""

The pieces began to fall into place.

My father hadn't simply wanted to steal Emma.

He had wanted to control the people responsible for her.

He had chosen Sarah because she desperately wanted a child. He had chosen Brenda because she was vulnerable to threats. He had used Dr. Hale and Eleanor Carter to manipulate the hospital records.

And he had counted on Daniel never questioning the identity of the baby he brought home.

"Why didn't Sarah tell Daniel?"" I asked.

Brenda lowered her eyes.

"At first, she thought it was temporary. Robert promised that Rebecca would recover and that the babies would be returned to their mothers once the situation was safe.""

"Then why did Sarah keep quiet?""

"Because Robert threatened to expose her involvement. He told her that if she confessed, she'd lose Emma and Daniel would be charged with fraud because of the money transferred into her account.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Sarah never touched that money.""

"She signed the documents.""

"Under threat.""

"Yes.""

For a moment, Daniel looked as though he might collapse.

I wanted to comfort him, but I couldn't ignore the question pressing against my mind.

"What happened to Rebecca?""

Brenda looked toward Emma.

"She was taken to Hawthorne Recovery Center after she tried to leave the hospital. Robert arranged for her to be declared mentally unstable. He used a false name on her admission paperwork.""

"How did she get out?""

"Sarah helped her.""

Daniel looked up sharply.

"What?""

Brenda nodded.

"Sarah began visiting Rebecca secretly. She brought her clothes, food, and letters. Eventually, she helped her escape.""

"When?""

"Five years ago.""

I remembered the photograph in the storage unit.

Rebecca standing outside Hawthorne Recovery Center.

The note on the back had said she was awake and remembered everything.

"Then why didn't Rebecca come for Emma?""

Brenda hesitated.

"She did.""

My chest tightened.

"When?""

"Three years ago. She came to Sarah's house. She wanted to see the child. Sarah refused.""

Daniel staggered backward.

"No.""

"Sarah was terrified," Brenda said.

"Robert had threatened to take Emma away permanently if Sarah helped Rebecca. She believed that if she waited until Emma was eighteen, the trust would be secure and Robert would have no power over her.""

"She kept a mother from her child for three years?"" I whispered.

Brenda's eyes filled with tears.

"She thought she was protecting Emma.""

"She was protecting herself.""

Brenda didn't argue.

Daniel turned away, pressing both hands against his face.

I could see the conflict tearing him apart. He had loved Sarah. He still loved her, despite the terrible things she had done.

But now he had to face the possibility that the woman he had buried had been part of a conspiracy that had stolen a child from her mother.

I looked at Emma.

"Sweetheart, do you remember Rebecca visiting you?""

Emma nodded slowly.

"She came to the house when I was five. She brought me a yellow blanket and a little silver bracelet.""

I glanced at the bracelet in the chest.

"Did you know who she was?""

"She said she was my mommy.""

My throat tightened.

"What happened?""

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"Sarah told me she was lying. She said Rebecca was a bad woman who wanted to take me away.""

Daniel made a broken sound.

Emma continued.

"But Rebecca cried when she left. She told me that if I ever remembered her, I should look for the woman named Claire.""

I knelt beside her.

"Why me?""

"Because Mommy said you were the only person in the family who hadn't agreed to the lie.""

The words silenced me.

I had never been asked to agree to anything.

I had never known there was a lie.

Yet somehow, I had become the person Rebecca trusted most.

I hugged Emma carefully.

"Did Rebecca tell you where she was going?""

Emma shook her head.

"She said she had to find someone who could help her.""

"Who?""

"A man named Daniel.""

My brother went completely still.

"She wanted to find me?""

Emma nodded.

"She said you were supposed to be my daddy.""

Daniel covered his mouth.

I had never seen him cry like that.

Not even when Sarah died.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Detective Harris called.

She had reviewed the documents we found in the storage unit and confirmed that the hospital records appeared to have been altered. She also told us that investigators had located the original police report from our father's accident.

There was a problem.

The dental records used to identify the body had belonged to someone else.

Someone had substituted the records before the report was finalized.

My father had never been identified.

He had simply vanished.

The detective asked us to send copies of the documents and warned us not to approach the address on the photograph.

I promised we wouldn't.

But when I hung up, Daniel was staring at the address.

"We have to go.""

I shook my head.

"Absolutely not.""

"Claire, Lily is missing.""

"And Emma could be in danger.""

"Both of them are in danger if we do nothing.""

He was right.

But charging into a remote property where my supposedly dead father was holding a child hostage was not a plan.

It was a way to get ourselves killed.

"We wait for the police," I insisted.

Daniel paced across the storage unit.

"What if he moves Lily before they arrive?""

I had no answer.

Then Brenda spoke.

"There's another way.""

We turned toward her.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded map.

"Robert has a second property. An old farmhouse near the lake. He used it when he needed somewhere private to meet people.""

"How do you know?"" I asked.

"Because I drove him there once.""

She unfolded the map.

A red circle marked a narrow road surrounded by woodland.

"If he's holding Lily, he'll probably take her there.""

"Why?""

"Because the main property is watched. He wouldn't risk keeping a child there if he knew the police were investigating.""

I studied the map.

"How do you know he's holding Lily?""

Brenda looked down.

"Because he called me this morning.""

My blood ran cold.

"What did he say?""

"He told me that if Emma reached Claire, the plan had changed. He said I had to make sure Emma was delivered to him before midnight.""

"And if you didn't?""

"He said Lily would disappear.""

Daniel stepped toward her.

"Did you hear Lily?""

Brenda nodded.

"She was crying in the background. She kept asking for her father.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

For the first time, I saw him stop fighting the truth and accept the full horror of what was happening.

Our father had taken his granddaughter.

He had threatened his own family.

And he was using two little girls as pieces in a game designed to secure money that wasn't his.

I folded the map.

"We're not giving him Emma.""

Daniel looked at me.

"No.""

"We're getting Lily back, and we're finding Rebecca.""

Brenda's face crumpled.

"You don't understand. Robert won't stop until he gets what he wants.""

"Then we'll make sure he can't hurt anyone else.""

She shook her head.

"You can't defeat him with a photograph and a few old letters.""

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the brass key.

"No," I said.

"But we can defeat him with evidence.""

I showed her the notebook, the hospital records, and Sarah's recording.

For the first time, Brenda looked genuinely frightened.

Then she whispered, "There's one thing you haven't found.""

"What?""

"The original transfer agreement.""

Daniel frowned.

"What transfer agreement?""

"The document Robert made Sarah sign before the babies left the hospital. It contains the names of everyone involved, including the person who approved the arrangement.""

"Where is it?""

Brenda looked at the wooden chest.

"Not in the storage unit.""

I felt a chill.

"Then where?""

She took a deep breath.

"In the house where Robert grew up.""

Our childhood home.

The house our mother had sold after my father's supposed death.

The house that had been empty for years, waiting for a new owner.

I stared at Brenda.

"Who owns it now?""

She swallowed.

"Your mother.""

I couldn't move.

Our mother had kept the house all these years.

And if Brenda was telling the truth, she might have been holding the one document capable of proving everything.

Before I could ask another question, my phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

A message appeared on the screen.

*You have until midnight. Bring Emma to the lake house. Come alone. If the police arrive, Lily dies.*

A second message followed.

It contained a photograph of Lily sitting on a wooden floor, her hands bound in front of her.

Her face was streaked with tears.

But she was alive.

And behind her stood a man whose face I had spent eight years mourning.

May you like

My father looked directly into the camera.

Then he smiled.
