Chapter 7: The Sister Behind the Mask

The police reopened the investigation into Ethan Morgan’s death the next morning.

Suddenly, the past I thought I understood started falling apart.

My wife had never been the only mystery.

She had been part of one.

Detective Daniels sat across from me in the hospital cafeteria.

“Four years ago, Rachel Morgan reported that her son drowned accidentally.””

I stared at him.

“But you don’t believe that.””

“No.””

“Why?””

He opened a file.

“Because there was one witness.””

I leaned forward.

“Who?””

“Your late wife.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

My wife.

Harper’s mother.

The woman I lost.

The woman whose absence had shaped every decision I made afterward.

“What did she know?””

Daniels looked uncomfortable.

“She told investigators she saw Rachel behaving strangely around Ethan.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why wasn’t Rachel arrested?””

“Because your wife refused to testify.””

“Why?””

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””

I thought about it.

My wife had always been private about the last months of her life.

She never talked about certain people.

Certain memories.

Certain fears.

And now I wondered if she had been protecting us.

Or if she had been protecting herself.

That evening, I sat beside Harper.

She was drawing in a notebook.

“What are you drawing?””

She turned it around.

A house.

Three people.

A little girl.

A little boy.

And two women standing outside.

I pointed.

“Who are they?””

Harper hesitated.

“Rebecca and Rachel.””

I looked closer.

“Why are they outside?””

“Because they weren’t supposed to come inside.””

My heart sank.

“Harper…”

She closed the notebook.

“I saw Rachel before.””

“When?””

“The night Ben got hurt.””

I froze.

“Where?””

“Outside the bathroom.””

I stood.

“What?””

Harper’s eyes filled with fear.

“She was there when Rebecca locked the door.””

I grabbed my chair.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””

“Because Rebecca told me Rachel would hurt Ben if I talked.””

The room felt smaller.

“She threatened you?””

Harper nodded.

“She said Rachel was angry.””

“At who?””

Harper whispered:

“At Mommy.””

I sat back.

Everything connected.

The missing necklace.

The threats.

The photograph.

The bathtub.

Rachel wasn’t just Rebecca’s sister.

She was the reason Rebecca had changed.

That night, I went through old family photos.

Pictures from before I met Rebecca.

Pictures of Harper with her mother.

Then I found something.

A picture from a charity event.

My late wife standing beside another woman.

I looked closer.

My breath caught.

Rachel.

She was there.

Not years later.

Before.

I called Detective Daniels immediately.

“You need to see this.””

Thirty minutes later, he arrived.

He stared at the photo.

“How did you get this?””

“It’s from my wife’s old albums.””

He looked at me.

“Your wife knew Rachel?””

“No.””

But even as I said it, I didn’t believe myself.

Because the woman I married after my wife’s death had somehow been connected to my wife before.

Daniels checked the photograph.

Then he found something.

A handwritten note on the back.

My late wife’s handwriting.

Three words.

“Do not trust.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“Who was she writing about?””

Daniels looked at the picture.

Then at me.

“Your wife knew something was going to happen.””

I looked at Harper sleeping upstairs.

At Ben fighting for his life.

At the empty space where Rebecca had been.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

“You’re looking in the wrong direction.””

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

Of Harper.

Standing outside the hospital.

Taken moments earlier.

My blood turned cold.

May you like

Because whoever sent it was watching us.

And they were close.
