Chapter 7: The Second File
The door opened.
My father stood there with both hands visible.
No weapon.
No anger.
Just exhaustion.
Behind him stood two police officers.
Harris lowered his weapon slightly.
“How did you get onto this floor?””
Dad looked at me.
“I have information about the trust.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“You're not coming any closer.””
Dad laughed bitterly.
“After everything I've done, you still think I'm the villain.””
I stared at him.
“You tried to stop Lily from reaching twenty-five weeks.””
“No.””
“You knew about the clause.””
“Yes.””
“You hid the original documents.””
“Yes.””
“You took the copies.””
“Yes.””
“Your wife was carrying a bottle that tested positive for a substance in my blood.””
Dad's face went pale.
“I didn't know about the bottle.””
“You knew about the supplements.””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me what is happening.””
He looked toward the hallway.
“Not here.””
Harris stepped closer.
“You're going to tell us now.””
Dad rubbed his face.
“Your grandfather wasn't protecting the family.””
I stared at him.
“He was protecting me.””
Daniel frowned.
“From what?””
Dad looked at me.
“From the man who killed him.””
Silence.
I felt my fingers go numb.
“My grandfather wasn't killed.””
Dad didn't answer.
“Was he?””
He looked away.
“Your mother and I were told he died from a heart attack.””
“That's not what I asked.””
His silence answered me.
Harris stepped forward.
“Mr. Bennett, are you saying Thomas Bennett was murdered?””
“Yes.””
“Who killed him?””
Dad looked directly at Daniel.
And then said:
“Your father.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“My father?”” Daniel whispered.
Dad nodded.
“Robert Carter.””
Daniel stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
“My father was a financial adviser to your grandfather.””
Daniel stared at him.
“My dad died before I was born.””
“So did the man who supposedly murdered mine.””
Harris looked between them.
“Both fathers are dead?””
“Yes,” Dad said.
“And you believe they were involved in the trust?””
“They were involved in something much bigger.””
He reached inside his jacket.
Harris immediately raised his weapon.
“Slowly.””
Dad pulled out a small envelope.
He handed it to Harris.
“Your grandfather left this for Sarah.””
Harris opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
He read it silently.
Then looked at me.
“What?””
Harris handed it over.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My grandfather's.
*Sarah,*
*If you are reading this, then someone has discovered the trust before the time I intended. Do not trust your parents. Do not trust anyone who tells you the inheritance is about money. It isn't.*
My hands trembled.
Daniel leaned over my shoulder.
I continued.
*The trust is designed to protect the child, not enrich her.*
Below that was another line.
*The money is bait.*
I looked up.
“Bait?””
Dad nodded.
“Your grandfather knew someone would try to claim the estate before the trust became permanent.””
“Who?””
“We don't know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because we never found out.””
I read the letter again.
There was one final sentence.
*The second file contains the name.*
My eyes lifted.
“The second file.””
Dad nodded.
“Michael has it.””
Harris's phone rang.
He answered.
“What?””
His expression changed.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Keep him under guard.””
He hung up.
“Michael escaped.””
Dad closed his eyes.
“Of course he did.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Where did he go?””
“We don't know.””
I looked at my father.
“You said your father killed my grandfather.””
“Yes.””
“Then why would Grandpa leave the trust to me?””
“Because he knew your father was involved.””
“My father?””
“No.””
Dad looked at Daniel.
“Your father.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My dad wasn't alive.””
“He was alive when the trust was created.””
“What are you talking about?””
Dad pulled out another photograph.
It showed four men sitting around a table.
My grandfather.
My father.
Michael.
And a younger man.
Daniel stepped closer.
His face went blank.
“That’s my father.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“My father.””
Daniel's voice was barely audible.
“He was supposed to have died before I was born.””
Dad nodded.
“He didn't.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Daniel took the photograph.
“My mother told me he died in a car accident.””
“She lied.””
“Why?””
“Because your father was part of the organization.””
“What organization?””
Dad looked at Harris.
“That's what your grandfather called it.””
“What did he call it?””
Dad's eyes met mine.
“The Family Office.””
I almost laughed.
“That sounds ridiculous.””
“It wasn't a company.””
“What was it?””
Dad's voice dropped.
“A private network that moved money, properties, and people through shell trusts. Your grandfather discovered they were using his assets.””
Harris frowned.
“Why would he create another trust?””
“To trap them.””
I looked down at my stomach.
“And Lily?””
Dad nodded.
“The condition was designed to expose anyone who tried to interfere before the trust became permanent.””
I stared at him.
“How?””
“Because the moment someone attacks you or the baby, they trigger a separate clause.””
Harris's eyes widened.
“What clause?””
Dad looked at me.
“Your grandfather anticipated violence.””
My breath caught.
“What does the clause say?””
Dad hesitated.
Then:
“If the beneficiary or unborn descendant is intentionally harmed before the trust becomes irrevocable, an independent forensic trustee takes control of the estate and releases the evidence package.””
Daniel looked at Harris.
“So the attack itself activates the evidence.””
“Yes.””
I suddenly understood.
My grandfather hadn't just left me money.
He had built a trap.
Emily's kick.
The bottle.
The twenty-five-week deadline.
All of it was pulling something into the open.
Harris looked at Dad.
“Where is the evidence package?””
Dad's face went pale.
“I don't know.””
“You're lying.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Because your grandfather didn't trust me either.””
I felt a chill.
“Then who has it?””
Dad stared at the hospital window.
“I think Michael does.””
Daniel's phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A video file.
He opened it.
Michael appeared on screen.
Older.
Thin.
Terrified.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Sarah, if you're watching this, your grandfather was right.””
He swallowed.
“They're going to come for your baby.””
I gripped Daniel's arm.
Michael continued.
“And the person you think is protecting you…”
He looked over his shoulder.
“…is the one who started this.””
The video ended.
Daniel stared at the black screen.
I whispered:
“Who?””
May you like
A new message appeared.
*Ask your father who signed the original death certificate.*
