Chapter 8: The Secret My Mother Buried

The photograph showed my mother standing beside Ethan.

But it wasn’t recent.

It was years old.

Before I built my company.

Before I met Daniel.

Before everything fell apart.

I looked at my mother’s message again.

*You need to see this.*

I called immediately.

She answered after three rings.

“Marissa.””

Her voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not demanding.

Afraid.

“Explain.””

Silence.

“Mom.””

“I made mistakes.””

“That’s not an explanation.””

I heard her crying softly.

Something in me wanted to feel sympathy.

But the wounds were too fresh.

“You helped him.””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“Not at first.””

I closed my eyes.

“At first?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Ethan contacted your father months ago.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew your father was unhappy.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Unhappy?””

She didn’t respond.

My mother continued.

“He told your father that you were becoming arrogant.””

My stomach twisted.

“Arrogant?””

“He said you forgot where you came from.””

I gripped the phone.

“So Dad helped him?””

“He thought he was helping the family.””

There it was.

The excuse.

Always the excuse.

“He promised your father money.””

“How much?””

Silence.

“How much?””

“Two hundred thousand dollars.””

I felt numb.

My own father sold me.

Not because he was desperate.

Because he was greedy.

“He bought you.””

“No.””

My mother’s voice cracked.

“He manipulated him.””

I looked around the office.

Everything suddenly felt unreal.

My father didn’t just betray me.

He participated.

“What else?””

My mother hesitated.

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

I waited.

“Your father signed something.””

“What?””

“A contract.””

My heart sank.

“With Ethan?””

“Yes.””

“What kind of contract?””

My mother whispered:

“The house.””

I froze.

“What about the house?””

“He promised Ethan that if the plan worked, your property would become part of the deal.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My home.

My family never wanted the house.

They wanted to use it.

As leverage.

As an asset.

As a weapon.

I ended the call.

Daniel had heard enough.

“He planned everything.””

I nodded.

“And my father helped.””

Daniel looked at me carefully.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked at the photograph.

Then I smiled.

Not because I was happy.

Because I finally understood.

“I’m going to let him think he won.””

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“You have a plan.””

“Yes.””

For the first time in weeks, I felt in control.

Ethan believed I was emotional.

My family believed I was weak.

They were both wrong.

The next day, I agreed to meet Ethan.

Alone.

At least, that’s what he thought.

The restaurant was expensive.

Quiet.

The kind of place where powerful people made decisions.

Ethan arrived smiling.

“I knew you’d come.””

I sat across from him.

“You always did know me.””

He smiled.

“That’s why this hurts.””

“Because you underestimated me?””

His smile faded slightly.

“No.””

He leaned forward.

“Because I wanted to give you a chance.””

I almost laughed.

“You wanted my company.””

“Yes.””

“And my house.””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

I placed the photograph on the table.

His face went still.

For the first time, Ethan Cole looked afraid.

“You should be careful with old pictures.””

“You should be careful with old mistakes.””

He stared at me.

“What do you want?””

“The truth.””

“You won’t get it.””

I smiled.

“Actually, I already have.””

He leaned back.

“You think you’ve won?””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“I think you’re about to lose.””

His phone buzzed.

He checked it.

Then looked at me.

“What did you do?””

I smiled.

“Nothing.””

That was the part he didn’t understand.

I didn’t need to destroy him.

I only needed to stop protecting him.

As Ethan stood up, his confidence disappeared.

Because outside the restaurant, several vehicles had arrived.

And Daniel was waiting.

But he wasn’t alone.

He brought someone Ethan never expected to see.

May you like

Someone who could prove every lie.

Ethan’s own business partner.
