Chapter 8: The Chairman's Last Move

The fire alarm continued screaming.
Daniel held Lily against his chest while Michael checked the corridor.
"Clear," Michael said.
Evelyn stepped outside.
"Where are the guards?""
Michael looked toward the stairwell.
"Not where they're supposed to be.""
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"The security team was assigned to the main entrance and the seventh-floor corridor. I don't see either group.""
Daniel tightened his hold on Lily.
"Then we're not going anywhere until we know what's happening.""
Michael shook his head.
"Sir, we need to get her out.""
A burst of static came through the emergency speaker.
Then a voice spoke.
"All hotel employees are instructed to use the east staircase. Guests should proceed to the main lobby.""
Michael looked at Daniel.
"That's wrong.""
"Why?""
"The east staircase leads to the underground loading area. The main lobby is the only public exit.""
Evelyn immediately understood.
"Someone is directing people toward a controlled exit.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Can they lock the loading area?""
Michael nodded.
"From the security office.""
Daniel stared down the corridor.
"Then we're going through the service stairs.""
They moved quickly.
Lily buried her face against his shoulder.
"Daddy, I'm scared.""
He kissed her hair.
"I know, sweetheart. Just hold on to me.""
At the end of the corridor, they found Thomas.
He was standing beside a housekeeping trolley, holding Lily's missing teddy bear.
"Mr. Bennett!""
Daniel stopped.
"Thomas! What are you doing here?""
"I found this in the linen room. I thought Miss Lily might need it.""
Lily immediately reached for the toy.
"Teddy!""
Thomas handed it to her.
Then he looked at Michael.
His face went pale.
"Good Lord.""
Michael nodded.
"Hello, Thomas.""
The old man's eyes filled.
"Is it really you?""
Michael smiled sadly.
"Yes.""
Thomas shook his head.
"I thought I was losing my mind when I saw you in that photograph.""
Daniel looked at him.
"What photograph?""
Thomas reached into his pocket and removed a folded newspaper clipping.
It showed a younger version of Michael standing beside Daniel's father.
The headline read:
*BENNETT FAMILY MOURNS AFTER OVERSEAS TRAGEDY.*
Thomas looked at Michael.
"Clara told me you were alive.""
Daniel turned.
"When?""
"Three months before she died. She asked me to keep a package safe.""
"What package?""
Thomas looked toward the elevator.
"I hid it in the old laundry room.""
Evelyn stepped forward.
"Does it contain documents?""
Thomas nodded.
"Letters. Bank statements. And a copy of the original accident report.""
Daniel stared.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"Because Clara made me promise to wait until you returned with Lily.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
His wife had planned all of this.
She had known that one day he would come back.
She had left pieces of the truth in the only place she knew he would eventually visit.
"Take us there," he said.
Thomas nodded.
"Follow me.""
The old laundry room was on the sixth floor.
They reached it through a narrow service staircase.
The alarm continued ringing, but there was no smoke.
No smell of fire.
No visible emergency.
Evelyn checked her phone.
"The fire department hasn't received a report of an actual fire.""
Daniel looked at her.
"So the alarm is fake.""
"Probably.""
Michael opened the laundry-room door.
Inside, old washing machines stood beneath dusty fluorescent lights. A metal shelving unit occupied one wall.
Thomas walked to the far corner and moved a stack of folded linen.
Behind it was a small wooden cabinet.
He removed a key from his pocket.
"Mrs. Bennett gave me this.""
The cabinet opened.
Inside sat a metal box.
Thomas lifted it carefully and placed it on a table.
Daniel stared at the label.
CLARA BENNETT — PERSONAL.
His hands trembled.
Evelyn opened the box.
There were three envelopes, a flash drive, several bank statements, and a small handwritten notebook.
Daniel picked up the first envelope.
His name was written across it.
He opened it.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, I wasn't able to explain everything to you myself.
Please don't blame yourself for what happened. You were the safest person in my life, and I never wanted you to carry my fear.
I discovered that Peter had been using your father's identity to move money through the hotel. Richard helped him, but Richard wasn't the person making the decisions.
The person who knew everything was someone I trusted.
Daniel stopped reading.
Evelyn looked at him.
"Keep going.""
He swallowed.
Your mother knows who that person is. I asked her to tell you, but she refused because she believed the truth would destroy our family.
There is one thing you must understand. Peter didn't arrange the accident to kill your father.
Daniel frowned.
He continued.
He arranged it because your father had discovered that Peter was planning to take control of Bennett Hospitality. Your father survived. But Peter believed he had not.
The second attempt was meant for me.
Daniel's vision blurred.
He lowered the letter.
"Second attempt?""
Michael's face tightened.
"Clara's accident.""
Daniel looked at him.
"You're saying Peter arranged Clara's death?""
Michael didn't answer.
Evelyn removed the flash drive.
"We need to preserve this.""
A noise came from the corridor.
Footsteps.
Then a familiar voice.
"Daniel?""
Everyone turned.
Richard Collins stood in the doorway.
His suit jacket was gone, and his shirt collar was open.
He looked exhausted.
"Thank God I found you.""
Daniel stepped in front of Lily.
"What are you doing here?""
Richard raised both hands.
"I came to help.""
Michael moved closer.
"Stay where you are.""
Richard looked at him.
"Michael. I wondered when you'd finally reveal yourself.""
Daniel stared.
"You knew?""
Richard laughed bitterly.
"Of course I knew.""
Michael's expression hardened.
"How long?""
"Eleven years.""
Daniel felt his stomach twist.
"You knew he was my father, and you let me believe he was dead?""
Richard shook his head.
"Your father made his own choices.""
Michael stepped forward.
"You were the one who arranged the second accident.""
Richard's face changed.
"I didn't arrange anything.""
"Then why did you pay the driver?""
Richard's mouth opened.
No words came out.
Evelyn immediately started recording.
"Mr. Collins, are you admitting involvement in the death of Clara Bennett?""
Richard looked at the phone.
Then he laughed.
"You think a recording is going to save you?""
He pulled a small remote from his pocket.
Michael's eyes widened.
"Don't press that.""
Richard smiled.
"Then you know what it does.""
Daniel looked around.
"What is it?""
Michael whispered:
"Emergency security lockdown.""
Richard pressed the button.
A heavy metallic sound echoed through the building.
Then every door in the corridor slammed shut.
A second later, the lights went out.
Lily screamed.
Daniel pulled her against his chest.
"Michael!""
"I'm here!""
Evelyn's phone flashlight switched on.
Its beam revealed Richard standing at the doorway.
He was smiling.
"Peter sends his regards.""
Then he disappeared.
Michael rushed after him.
But the door slammed shut before he reached it.
Daniel grabbed the handle.
Locked.
Evelyn searched the room.
"There must be an emergency release.""
Thomas pointed toward the wall.
"Behind the cabinet!""
Daniel moved the cabinet.
A narrow metal panel appeared.
Michael found a small lever.
He pulled.
Nothing happened.
Then a loud bang came from somewhere above them.
The ceiling shook.
Dust fell from the ventilation shaft.
Daniel looked up.
"What's happening?""
Michael stared at the ceiling.
"They're trying to destroy the evidence.""
Evelyn clutched the flash drive.
"How?""
Michael pointed toward the laundry machinery.
"Those old industrial units are connected to the hotel's emergency electrical system. If someone overloads the circuit, this entire section could catch fire.""
Daniel looked at Lily.
Her little face was buried against his neck.
He tightened his arms around her.
"Get us out.""
Michael pulled the lever again.
This time, the panel clicked.
A narrow door opened behind the cabinet.
Thomas stared.
"That passage hasn't been used in years.""
Michael nodded.
"Then tonight is a good time to use it.""
They entered the narrow service passage.
Daniel went first, carrying Lily.
Evelyn followed with the evidence.
Thomas came behind her.
Michael was last.
They had barely moved ten feet when a loud crash echoed through the laundry room.
Flames flashed beneath the door.
Daniel looked back.
"Move!""
They hurried through the passage.
At the far end, Michael pushed open a metal door.
They emerged into the hotel's old banquet storage area.
Daniel lowered Lily to her feet.
"Are you okay?""
She nodded.
Then she looked at the recorder in his hand.
"Daddy, is that Mommy talking?""
Daniel knelt.
"Yes, princess.""
"Can I hear her?""
He hesitated.
Then he pressed PLAY.
Clara's voice filled the dark storage room.
"Daniel, if you ever find this recording, I need you to know that I loved you more than anything.""
Lily smiled.
"Mommy.""
Then Clara continued.
"But there's something I never told you. The person who helped Peter arrange everything was...""
The recording crackled.
A burst of static swallowed the next few seconds.
Then Clara's voice returned.
"Your mother.""
Daniel froze.
Michael closed his eyes.
Evelyn looked at him.
"Is that true?""
Michael nodded slowly.
"She helped Peter create the original trust. But she didn't know what he intended to do with it.""
Daniel stared at him.
"You're telling me my mother helped the people who destroyed our family?""
Michael looked toward the door.
"She helped them before she understood what they were planning.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That doesn't make sense.""
Michael took a breath.
"Your mother was the one who signed the original document transferring control of the family trust.""
Daniel looked at the recorder.
Then at the notebook.
He suddenly understood why Clara had hidden the evidence.
The betrayal wasn't just about money.
It was about the people who had known his family for decades.
And the worst part was that he still didn't know whether his mother had been a victim or a willing accomplice.
His phone vibrated.
An incoming video call.
MOM.
Daniel answered.
Eleanor appeared on the screen.
Her face was pale.
"Daniel, listen to me.""
"Did you help Peter?""
She began crying.
"I didn't know.""
"Did you sign the trust?""
"Yes.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Why?""
Eleanor looked directly into the camera.
"Because Peter told me your father was dead.""
Daniel frowned.
"What?""
"He told me your father had left another family. He said the trust was the only way to protect you.""
Michael stepped closer to the phone.
"Eleanor, tell him the rest.""
She looked at Michael.
Her eyes widened.
"You're alive.""
Michael nodded.
"Yes.""
Eleanor began sobbing.
Then she whispered:
"Daniel, Peter is on his way to the hotel.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Where is he?""
Eleanor looked terrified.
"He's already there.""
A loud knock sounded from the storage-room door.
Three times.
Then a man's voice spoke from the other side.
"Daniel, it's time we settled our family business.""
Michael stepped in front of his son.
"Peter.""
The handle began to turn.
And Daniel finally understood why Clara had hidden the truth.
May you like
Because the man standing outside the door wasn't simply a thief.
He was the last person in the world who should have been allowed near his family.
