Chapter 2: The Cancellation Nobody Was Supposed to See

Daniel stared at Thomas.
"Say that again.""
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
"Your son-in-law, sir. That's what he called himself.""
Daniel's eyes moved slowly toward Vanessa.
"Who authorized the cancellation?""
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"Thomas, that's enough. You're confusing the situation.""
"I'm not confused.""
"You're an elderly employee who has misunderstood a routine booking adjustment.""
Thomas's face reddened.
"I've worked here longer than you've been alive, Vanessa.""
"And I've been appointed to manage this department. Perhaps you should remember that.""
Daniel shifted Lily in his arms.
"Vanessa, I want a clear answer. Who canceled my reservation?""
She glanced at Emily.
The receptionist looked down.
"Mr. Bennett, there may have been a misunderstanding with the booking system," Vanessa said.
Daniel opened the confirmation email.
The message was dated three weeks earlier.
It showed a prepaid reservation for Suite 701, two nights, with a note attached.
Special request: White roses in the bedroom. A small chocolate cake for Lily. Please arrange the room as it was during Mrs. Bennett's last anniversary visit.
He turned the phone toward her.
"This is my confirmation.""
Vanessa glanced at the screen.
"I see that.""
"And the payment?""
"Payments can sometimes be reversed.""
"Was mine reversed?""
"I would need to check.""
"Then check.""
Her jaw tightened.
"Mr. Bennett, I don't appreciate being interrogated in front of guests.""
Daniel looked at the security guards.
"Am I being detained?""
Robert immediately stepped away.
"No, sir.""
"Then I suggest we stop pretending this is a normal customer-service issue.""
A woman standing near the lounge whispered something to her husband.
Daniel heard the word owner.
Vanessa heard it too.
Her face hardened.
"Emily, take Mr. Bennett's details and arrange alternative accommodation.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I didn't ask for alternative accommodation.""
"Suite 701 is unavailable.""
"Why?""
"It's under renovation.""
Thomas turned sharply.
"That's a lie.""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Excuse me?""
"I was in that suite yesterday. The room was inspected, cleaned, and prepared for tonight.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Prepared?""
Thomas nodded.
"Mrs. Collins arranged the flowers herself. She followed your written instructions.""
"Then why did you tell the front desk it was unavailable?""
Thomas looked toward Vanessa.
"I didn't.""
Emily's fingers stopped moving over the keyboard.
Daniel approached the counter.
"Print the booking history.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"That information is restricted.""
"I'm the owner of the company that owns this hotel.""
"Operational records are still subject to internal authorization.""
"Then authorize it.""
She folded her arms.
"I can't disclose confidential employee information.""
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
He had attended enough board meetings to recognize someone trying to hide behind procedure.
"All right," he said.
Vanessa seemed relieved.
"Thank you for understanding.""
Daniel took out his phone again.
He called a number he hadn't used in months.
"Michael? I need you inside the hotel.""
A familiar voice answered.
"Certainly, sir. Is everything all right?""
"No. Bring the hotel operations file from the car. Then contact the company's legal department. I want someone here immediately.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Mr. Bennett, there's no need to involve corporate management.""
Daniel ended the call.
"Apparently there is.""
Lily stirred.
"Daddy, are we still going to Mommy's room?""
He looked down.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
"Can I put the flowers by her picture?""
Daniel's throat tightened.
"Of course.""
Thomas stepped closer.
"Miss Lily, would you like to see something?""
She nodded.
Thomas reached into his jacket and pulled out a small photograph.
It showed Clara standing beside the grand piano in the lobby. She was wearing a pale blue dress, her dark hair falling over one shoulder.
Lily's eyes widened.
"Mommy!""
Thomas smiled.
"Your mother gave me that picture. She said I should keep it somewhere safe.""
Lily touched the photograph.
"She looks pretty.""
"She was very pretty.""
Daniel looked away.
For a moment, the noise of the lobby faded.
He remembered Clara laughing beneath the chandeliers, telling him that money could buy beautiful furniture but never a beautiful welcome.
Then a familiar voice interrupted the moment.
"What's happening here?""
A man in an expensive charcoal suit entered through the main doors.
He was in his early forties, with neatly styled dark hair and a gold wedding band.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
Richard Collins.
The hotel's regional operations director.
Richard had been promoted eighteen months earlier after Daniel's wife died. He had previously worked in finance and had been recommended by a member of the board.
He approached Vanessa and whispered something.
She whispered back.
Then Richard looked at Daniel.
His expression changed.
"Mr. Bennett.""
"Richard.""
Richard glanced at Lily.
"Well, this is unexpected.""
"Apparently.""
Richard smiled awkwardly.
"I heard there was a booking dispute.""
"Is that what they're calling it?""
"I understand emotions are running high.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Emotions?""
Richard raised his hands.
"Let's not make this bigger than it needs to be.""
Daniel pointed toward the reception desk.
"My reservation was canceled this morning. My daughter and I were insulted, and your front office manager ordered security to remove me.""
Richard's smile weakened.
"I'm sure Vanessa was simply following hotel protocol.""
"Which protocol allows an employee to cancel a prepaid reservation without informing the guest?""
Richard hesitated.
"Sometimes adjustments are necessary.""
"Who requested this adjustment?""
"I would need to review the records.""
"Thomas says someone claiming to be my son-in-law called.""
Richard glanced at Thomas.
The older man immediately noticed.
"That's right," Thomas said.
"I remember the call.""
Richard cleared his throat.
"Thomas, perhaps you should return to your duties.""
"I will when I know why someone used Mr. Bennett's family name to cancel his reservation.""
Richard's expression became cold.
"You're not authorized to question management decisions.""
Thomas stared at him.
"And you're not authorized to treat this family like strangers.""
Daniel held up one hand.
"Richard, let's keep this simple. Give me access to the booking records.""
"I can't do that without an internal review.""
"Then call the person who can.""
Richard checked his watch.
"I have a regional meeting in twenty minutes.""
Daniel almost laughed.
"My daughter is standing here with her teddy bear, waiting to visit the room where her mother used to sleep. I think your meeting can wait.""
Richard's cheeks reddened.
"Mr. Bennett, with respect, your personal circumstances don't change the hotel's operating procedures.""
The sentence landed like a slap.
Daniel studied him.
"You're right. They don't.""
He turned toward Thomas.
"Would you take Lily to the lounge for a few minutes? Please don't let her hear any more of this.""
Thomas nodded.
"Of course, sir.""
Lily wrapped her arms around Daniel's neck.
"Daddy, don't go away.""
"I won't, princess.""
"Promise?""
"I promise.""
Thomas carried her teddy bear while Daniel carefully transferred her into his arms.
The little girl looked back at her father.
"Don't forget Mommy's flowers.""
Daniel lifted the roses.
"I couldn't possibly.""
Thomas took her toward the lounge.
The moment Lily disappeared around the corner, Daniel's expression changed.
"Richard, I want the security footage from this morning, the reservation audit trail, and the name of every employee who accessed my booking.""
Richard's smile vanished.
"That's an unreasonable demand.""
"Then perhaps you should explain why you think it is unreasonable.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Mr. Bennett, we can resolve this privately.""
Daniel turned to her.
"You had an opportunity to resolve it privately when I first walked through those doors.""
She said nothing.
He continued.
"You chose to humiliate me in front of my daughter instead.""
Richard lowered his voice.
"Daniel, please. We can discuss this in my office.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Not until I see the records.""
Richard looked toward Emily.
"Get the general manager on the phone.""
Emily nodded quickly.
She reached for the desk phone.
But before she could dial, the elevator doors opened.
A woman in her late thirties stepped out.
She wore a cream-colored coat and carried a black leather handbag.
Daniel recognized her.
His sister-in-law.
Margaret Collins.
Richard's wife.
She walked straight toward him, her heels clicking against the marble.
"Daniel.""
He looked at her in disbelief.
"Margaret?""
She smiled.
"Well, this is a surprise.""
Richard immediately moved beside her.
"What are you doing here?""
Margaret ignored him.
She looked at the roses in Daniel's hand, then toward the lounge where Lily had disappeared.
"I heard you were coming back tonight.""
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"How?""
Margaret adjusted her handbag.
"Richard mentioned it.""
Daniel looked at his regional director.
"You knew I was coming?""
Richard said nothing.
Margaret leaned closer.
"Daniel, perhaps we should talk about the future of this hotel.""
Daniel frowned.
"What future?""
She gave him a small smile.
"The future without you running it.""
For several seconds, the only sound in the lobby was the pianist playing beside the staircase.
Then Margaret reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.
She placed it on the reception counter.
Daniel looked down.
It was a printed authorization form.
His name appeared at the bottom.
His signature appeared beneath it.
May you like
But he had never signed it.
And the date was tomorrow.
