Chapter 2: The Gift That Disappeared

The reception hall was decorated like a magazine cover.

Three hundred guests.

Crystal lights.

White flowers.

A stage where my son and his new wife would begin their life together.

Everyone saw a celebration.

I saw a battlefield.

I kept my handbag close because inside it was the small recorder I had turned on after Sabrina’s whisper.

I had learned something over thirty years in business:

People revealed the truth when they thought nobody was listening.

During dinner, Michael walked over.

“Mom, you’ve been quiet.””

I smiled.

“I’m tired.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“You’re not upset about the hair thing, are you?””

There it was.

Not concern.

Confirmation.

“You knew?””

His eyebrows lifted.

“Knew what?””

I studied him.

“Sabrina told you?””

“Mom, don’t start.””

I felt something crack inside me.

“Don’t start what?””

He glanced around.

“Not today.””

“Not today?””

“Yes. This is my wedding day.””

I almost laughed.

Because somehow, my pain had become an inconvenience.

“I woke up with someone shaving my head.””

He lowered his voice.

“Are you sure you didn’t overreact?””

The room seemed to disappear.

“Michael.””

“What?””

“You’re asking if I overreacted?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I’m saying maybe there’s an explanation.””

Before I could answer, Sabrina appeared beside him.

“What’s wrong?””

Michael immediately softened.

“Nothing.””

Sabrina smiled at me.

“Margaret, are you causing stress on our wedding day?””

The way she said my name made it sound like an accusation.

I stared at her.

“You cut my hair.””

A few nearby guests looked over.

Sabrina laughed softly.

“Oh my God.””

She touched Michael’s arm.

“She’s serious.””

Michael sighed.

“Mom…”

That one word carried years of disappointment.

I turned away.

Because if I stayed, I knew I would say something I couldn’t take back.

Later, when everyone moved toward the dance floor, I saw Sabrina speaking with one of her friends.

I stayed behind a pillar and listened.

“She actually thought she was giving us everything,” Sabrina said.

My stomach tightened.

Her friend laughed.

“Seriously?””

“The penthouse. The money. Everything.””

My fingers tightened around my handbag.

Sabrina knew about the gift.

But how?

Her friend lowered her voice.

“She’s still giving it, right?””

Sabrina smiled.

“She thinks she is.””

I stopped breathing.

Then Sabrina said something that made my entire body go still.

“After tonight, she won’t have a choice.””

I stepped away before they saw me.

I went into the empty hallway and called Avery.

He answered immediately.

“Margaret?””

“She knows.””

“Knows what?””

“The gift.””

A pause.

“That’s impossible.””

“No. It isn’t.””

I closed my eyes.

Because I finally understood.

The penthouse wasn’t the reason Sabrina humiliated me.

It was because she believed the money was already hers.

Avery’s voice became serious.

“Did you transfer anything?””

“No.””

“Did you sign anything?””

“No.””

“Then you still control everything.””

I looked back toward the ballroom.

At my son dancing with the woman who had hurt me.

“Yes,” I whispered.

“But I need to know how she found out.””

When I returned, the emcee stepped onto the stage.

“Everyone, we have a special moment.””

Sabrina immediately looked toward me.

She knew.

She thought the announcement was mine.

She thought I was about to hand them their future.

People turned.

Michael smiled.

“Mom?””

I walked toward the microphone.

My heart was pounding.

For years, I had imagined this moment differently.

I imagined presenting the envelope.

I imagined Sabrina hugging me.

I imagined Michael saying thank you.

Instead, I placed the handwritten note on the podium.

The room became silent.

“Most of you noticed my hair changed today.””

A few guests laughed nervously.

Sabrina’s smile disappeared.

I held up the note.

“Actually, this was left for me this morning.””

Michael looked confused.

“Mom…”

I looked directly at Sabrina.

Her face had gone pale.

Then I reached toward my silver hair.

“Everyone thinks this is my new hairstyle.””

I paused.

“But it isn’t.””

The room went silent.

I grabbed the edge of the wig.

Michael stood up.

“Mom, what are you doing?””

I pulled.

The silver hairpiece came away.

Gasps exploded around the room.

My shaved head was revealed.

And for the first time all day…

Sabrina looked afraid.

I placed the wig on the podium.

Then I said quietly:

“This is what my son’s wife did before she walked down the aisle.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Until a voice came from the back of the room.

A voice I never expected.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

A man stepped forward.

A man holding a folder.

And when Sabrina saw him…

her face completely changed.

May you like

Because she knew him.

And she knew exactly why he was here.
