Chapter 5: The Trap He Built For Me

I spent that night in Maya’s guest room.

Not because I was afraid of being alone.

Because I needed distance from the house where I had spent twelve years believing a lie.

The next morning, Rebecca arrived with a folder.

She placed it on the table.

“Clara, before we do anything, you need to understand something.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Nathan is not panicking because you found out about Olivia.””

“Then why?””

“Because you found out before he was ready.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Before he was ready.

Not before he betrayed me.

Before he completed the plan.

Rebecca opened the folder.

“He created a timeline.””

“A timeline?””

“Yes.””

She showed me pages of notes.

Dates.

Meetings.

Transactions.

My life reduced to bullet points.

My stomach turned.

“He documented everything.””

“Why would someone do that?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“Because he believed he would win.””

The anger I had been holding finally broke through.

Not loud.

Not explosive.

Cold.

“He thought I was stupid.””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

That afternoon, Nathan called.

I answered.

Not because I wanted to hear him.

Because I needed information.

“Clara.””

His voice sounded different.

Less confident.

“What do you want?””

“I want to talk.””

“About the affair?””

A pause.

“No.””

“About the money?””

Another pause.

Longer.

That was enough.

“You’re quiet,” I said.

“Because I’m trying to understand why you’re doing this.””

I almost smiled.

“Doing what?””

“Turning this into a war.””

I looked at the documents on the table.

“You started the war.””

“Clara, you don’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

I waited.

Finally:

“I made mistakes.””

“More than one.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you lie?””

His breathing changed.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

The answer came quietly.

“Of losing everything.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Not love.

Not regret.

Fear.

“You were afraid of losing your life.””

“Yes.””

“Not me.””

He didn’t respond.

And that silence was louder than any confession.

Later that evening, I returned home with Rebecca.

The house looked exactly the same.

The same furniture.

The same pictures.

The same walls.

But it didn’t feel like mine anymore.

Then I noticed something.

The study door was open.

I had never left it open.

I walked inside.

Rebecca followed.

On Nathan’s desk was a laptop.

Still open.

My heart started racing.

“Clara.””

I stepped closer.

There was an email draft.

No recipient.

No subject.

Just words.

I read the first sentence.

*When Clara signs the agreement, everything will transfer within thirty days.*

My blood went cold.

Rebecca moved beside me.

“Take pictures.””

I did.

Then another notification appeared.

A new email.

From Nathan.

But it wasn’t sent to me.

It was sent to Olivia.

The message was only one line.

*She knows. Handle it.*

I stared at the screen.

Rebecca’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly, I understood something.

Olivia wasn’t the end of Nathan’s betrayal.

She was only a piece of it.

And if Nathan had written those words…

If he was telling Olivia to handle me…

Then the woman who helped destroy my marriage might be the only person who could help me destroy him.

My phone rang.

Olivia.

I answered.

Her voice was shaking.

“Clara, you need to leave your house right now.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“Because Nathan isn’t coming back to apologize.””

I looked toward the dark hallway.

“What is he coming back for?””

May you like

Olivia’s answer made my blood run cold.

“He’s coming back to make sure you can never expose him.””
