Chapter 2: The Secret She Buried

Daniel always believed he knew me.

That was his first mistake.

The second was believing pain made people powerless.

I spent the next two days in the hospital pretending to be exhausted.

Pretending I was afraid.

Pretending I didn’t notice every conversation happening outside my door.

Because people reveal everything when they think they have already won.

The police arrived the morning after Lena showed them the recording.

Detective Marcus Reed was a quiet man with tired eyes and a notebook he barely looked at.

He looked at the footage three times.

Then he looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, I need you to understand something,” he said.

“People like your husband rarely confess.””

I stared at the blanket covering my legs.

“I know.””

He studied me.

“You sound like you expected this.””

I almost smiled.

“I did.””

After he left, Lena sat beside my bed.

“You should have told me.””

I looked at her.

“About what?””

“That he was hurting you.””

The room became quiet.

I hated that question.

Not because it was unfair.

Because it was true.

I should have told someone.

But Daniel had spent years making sure I believed nobody would believe me.

He started slowly.

A comment here.

A criticism there.

“You’re too intense.””

“You intimidate people.””

“You don’t know how normal marriages work.””

Then came the isolation.

He convinced me to stop seeing certain friends.

He changed our financial accounts.

He told everyone I was under stress after leaving my career.

The world saw a successful businessman caring for his “fragile” wife.

Nobody saw the locked doors.

Nobody saw the whispered threats.

Nobody saw Vivian standing in my kitchen saying, “Women like you always think they’re smarter than everyone else.””

She was right.

I did think I was smarter.

I just didn’t realize they were willing to become monsters.

Lena opened her laptop.

“Your trust account.””

I looked away.

“Not yet.””

“You’re seriously going to wait?””

“Yes.””

She frowned.

“Why?””

Because revenge was emotional.

Justice was precise.

“I need them to believe they are safe.””

Three months before the attack, Daniel had convinced me to sign documents transferring my father’s estate.

Or at least, that was what he thought.

My father had been a careful man.

Before he died, he told me something I never forgot.

“People who want your money will rush you.””

He was right.

Daniel rushed me.

He placed documents in front of me.

He talked about our future.

He smiled.

But he never noticed the missing pages.

He never noticed I compared every paragraph.

He never noticed I replaced the documents.

The real transfer papers never left my possession.

Neither did the evidence.

The hidden recordings.

The offshore account information.

The messages between Daniel and his business partner.

Everything.

Lena closed the laptop.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“And you stayed?””

I looked at the hospital window.

Outside, the city moved like nothing had happened.

“I stayed because I needed proof.””

Lena shook her head.

“You’re terrifying.””

A small smile crossed my face.

“No.””

I looked at my bandaged hands.

“I’m patient.””

That afternoon, Detective Reed returned.

This time, he brought photographs.

“We found something interesting.””

He placed them on the table.

Pictures of Daniel’s phone records.

Messages.

Calls.

One message stood out.

From Vivian.

Tonight. Make sure she doesn’t leave the kitchen before he comes home.

My stomach tightened.

Lena whispered, “They planned it.””

Detective Reed nodded.

“And there’s more.””

He placed another file down.

“Your husband had already contacted an attorney.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

The detective hesitated.

Then opened the file.

A divorce petition.

Prepared two weeks before the attack.

But that wasn’t the worst part.

Attached to the petition was a statement claiming I was mentally unstable.

A statement Daniel planned to use against me.

I read the words carefully.

Every lie.

Every accusation.

Every manufactured piece of evidence.

Then I saw the final line.

My hands stopped shaking.

Because beneath Daniel’s signature was another name.

A name I never expected.

May you like

Someone who had been helping him.

Someone who knew exactly who I was.
