Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Lies
The person standing at the end of the hallway was someone I never expected to fear.
Someone who had stood beside us.
Someone who had helped us.
Someone who had acted like they were searching for the truth.
Ethan.
My heart dropped.
Noah looked at him with confusion.
“But you said you were helping Dad.””
Ethan’s face tightened.
“I was.””
Marcus stepped forward immediately.
“You lied to us.””
Ethan didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
The simplicity of the answer made it worse.
I stared at him.
“Why?””
He looked at the DNA report still shaking in my hand.
“Because Daniel asked me to.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice echoed through the empty hospital hallway.
“Daniel asked me to hide this.””
“Daniel asked me to protect you.””
“Daniel asked me to lie.””
I looked at Ethan.
“When does someone finally admit that Daniel was wrong?””
Nobody answered.
Because maybe they all knew.
Maybe that was the part everyone had been avoiding.
Daniel could be a good man.
A loving father.
A devoted husband.
And still make choices that hurt people.
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
“You’re right?””
He nodded.
“Daniel was wrong.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Don’t.””
Ethan turned.
“No, Marcus.””
His voice became sharper.
“We spent eleven months pretending we were protecting his legacy.””
He looked at me.
“But we were protecting his mistakes.””
The hallway went silent.
Noah held my hand tighter.
I looked at Ethan.
“Then tell me.””
He hesitated.
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
He took a breath.
“Everything.””
We moved into a small waiting room near the archive.
Nobody sat comfortably.
How could we?
Our entire lives had been built on things people decided we were better off not knowing.
Ethan stood near the window.
“When Daniel discovered Victor Hale’s crimes, he didn’t just find financial records.””
He looked at Noah.
“He found evidence that Victor had been manipulating people for years.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Extortion.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Threats.””
“Yes.””
“Blackmail.””
“Yes.””
I looked between them.
“And Noah?””
Ethan’s face changed.
“That’s where Daniel made his biggest mistake.””
My stomach tightened.
“What mistake?””
Ethan looked at me.
“He thought he could control the danger.””
I said nothing.
“Daniel discovered Victor was Noah’s biological father after a DNA test was secretly taken during the pregnancy.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain was still fresh.
“Why was there a test?””
Ethan answered quietly.
“Because Victor suspected Daniel.””
“Of what?””
“That Daniel knew about him.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It will.””
Ethan walked closer.
“Before Daniel met you, he worked for Victor’s company.””
I froze.
Again.
Another piece of a life I never knew.
“He wasn’t like Victor,” Ethan continued.
“He wasn’t involved in the crimes. But he was close enough to see things.””
Marcus added:
“Daniel tried to leave.””
Ethan nodded.
“Victor doesn’t let people leave.””
I looked at Noah.
“So Daniel found out Victor was his father.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Ethan looked down.
“He made a deal.””
The words felt wrong.
“A deal with who?””
“Victor.””
My anger rose.
“What kind of deal?””
Ethan swallowed.
“Daniel promised he would disappear.””
The room became silent.
I stared at him.
“What?””
“He told Victor the baby was gone.””
My heart stopped.
“He lied.””
“Yes.””
“He told Victor Noah died?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Daniel would never…”
But then I stopped.
Because I remembered the message.
*SHE DOESN’T KNOW THE TRUTH.*
Maybe Daniel had done exactly that.
Maybe he had built a lie so large that even I couldn’t see it.
Ethan continued.
“Daniel believed if Victor thought Noah was dead, he would stop searching.””
“Did it work?””
“For eight years.””
The answer chilled me.
“Until now.””
Ethan nodded.
“Until someone found the old records.””
I looked at the DNA report.
“The test from six months ago.””
“Yes.””
“Who ordered it?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus said:
“Daniel.””
My head snapped up.
“What?””
Marcus looked devastated.
“Daniel ordered the test.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
“Because he started suspecting Victor had found a way back.””
I shook my head.
“This makes no sense.””
I looked at the three men.
“Daniel was alive.””
“Yes.””
“He knew Victor was dangerous.””
“Yes.””
“He knew Noah was at risk.””
“Yes.””
“Then why come back?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence told me there was one final secret.
One worse than all the others.
“Where is Daniel?””
Ethan looked away.
“Emma…”
“Where is he?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Then quietly said:
“He’s not hiding from Victor.””
I waited.
“He’s hiding because of what happened the night he disappeared.””
My heart raced.
“What happened?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Daniel didn’t fake his death alone.””
The words made the room colder.
“Someone helped him.””
“Who?””
Ethan’s eyes moved toward Marcus.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“No.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Emma…”
“You.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
“You helped him disappear?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
My anger exploded.
“You let me believe my husband was dead!””
“I know.””
“You let Noah cry for him!””
“I know.””
“You stood in my house and watched me grieve!””
His face broke.
“I know.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked like the answer physically hurt him.
“Because Daniel asked me to.””
I laughed.
A broken sound.
“Of course.””
I wiped my face.
“Of course he did.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“But I didn’t know everything.””
I looked at him.
“What didn’t you know?””
“That Daniel wasn’t planning to stay gone.””
My anger faded slightly.
“What?””
Marcus swallowed.
“He had a plan.””
“What plan?””
“To expose Victor.””
I stared.
“Then why didn’t he come back?””
Marcus looked at Ethan.
And Ethan answered.
“Because someone betrayed him.””
My heart froze.
“Who?””
Ethan didn’t speak.
Instead, he pulled out his phone.
He showed us a video.
The recording was dark.
Shaky.
But the voice was clear.
Daniel.
I heard him speaking.
“If you’re watching this, it means the plan failed.””
My eyes filled.
His face appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
My knees almost gave out.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“I’m sorry, Emma.””
The sound of his voice broke me.
“I wanted to come home.””
I covered my mouth.
“But I couldn’t.””
The video continued.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
Daniel looked away.
“And that person was someone I considered family.””
Marcus went completely still.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Because they both understood.
I didn’t.
“What does he mean?””
The video continued.
Daniel whispered:
“The person who betrayed me wasn’t working for Victor.””
A pause.
“They were working for someone who wanted Victor gone.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“And that person has been protecting Noah for eight years.””
The screen flickered.
Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.
“Emma, if you find this…”
He looked directly into the camera.
“Do not trust Marcus.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
I slowly turned toward Marcus.
The man who had protected us.
The man Daniel trusted.
The man who had cried over my husband.
Marcus looked shattered.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just broken.
“Emma…”
I stepped away.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
Because now I was afraid of him.
Then the hospital alarm suddenly began screaming.
Lights flashed red.
A voice came over the speakers.
“Security breach detected.””
Everyone looked toward the hallway.
Ethan checked his phone.
His face changed.
“What?””
Marcus looked at him.
“What is it?””
Ethan whispered:
“They’re here.””
“Who?””
Ethan looked at me.
Then at Noah.
“Victor.””
My heart pounded.
But before anyone moved, another message appeared on Ethan’s phone.
A message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
*YOU STILL DON’T KNOW THE WORST PART.*
Then a second message arrived.
A photo.
A live photo.
Taken moments ago.
Of Daniel.
Standing outside the hospital.
May you like
Alive.
And holding a gun.
