Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Curtain
Richard Carter had always been untouchable.
That was what everyone said.
He built companies.
Donated millions.
Had politicians shaking his hand at charity events.
He was the kind of man people described with words like “visionary.””
But I had learned something.
Powerful people were often just better at hiding their damage.
Two days after the hospital breach, I received an invitation.
Not a phone call.
Not a message.
A handwritten letter.
From Richard Carter.
The letter contained one sentence:
*We need to discuss the truth about Lily.*
I almost threw it away.
Almost.
But I had spent months fighting for answers.
And I wasn’t going to stop now.
I met him at his private office downtown.
The building was exactly what I expected.
Glass.
Steel.
Luxury.
A monument to money.
Richard stood when I entered.
“Emily.””
I didn’t shake his hand.
“Why did you access my daughter’s records?””
His smile disappeared.
“You’re direct.””
“You’re avoiding the question.””
He gestured toward a chair.
“Sit.””
“No.””
A small smile appeared.
“You’re more like me than you realize.””
“I’m nothing like you.””
That seemed to amuse him.
“Everyone says that before they understand the world.””
I stared.
“Did you manipulate Lily’s treatment?””
“No.””
“Did you profit from it?””
He didn’t answer quickly enough.
And that was my answer.
“You did.””
“I invested in medical innovation.””
“My daughter was not an investment.””
“She was a patient.””
“A patient whose medication you controlled.””
Richard sighed.
“You’re emotional.””
I almost laughed.
That sentence.
Everyone in Daniel’s family used the same words.
Emotional.
Difficult.
Unreasonable.
Anything to avoid admitting the truth.
“You all say that when women notice what you’re doing.””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You should be careful.””
“Is that a threat?””
“No.””
He smiled.
“It’s advice.””
I stood.
“Then here’s mine.””
He looked curious.
“Stay away from my daughter.””
I turned to leave.
Then Richard spoke.
“Your husband was weak.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“He cared too much about being loved.””
I slowly turned back.
“You manipulated him.””
“I guided him.””
My stomach twisted.
“You destroyed your own son.””
“No.””
Richard looked at me calmly.
“I showed him what mattered.””
“And what was that?””
“Winning.””
I walked out.
But before I reached my car, my phone rang.
Marcus.
“Emily, you need to come back to the hospital.””
“Why?””
His voice was tense.
“Because we found something in Lily’s records.””
“What?””
“A hidden note.””
My heart raced.
“From who?””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“From your husband.””
