The Door / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Last Lie

Nobody moved.

The doorbell rang again.

Once.

Twice.

Then a third time.

David walked toward the window.

Michael grabbed his arm.

“Don't open it.””

David looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he knows we're here.””

David glanced toward the curtains.

Richard's silhouette stood beyond the frosted glass.

Emma's heart hammered.

Victoria whispered, “He knows.””

Claire was crying silently.

David turned toward her.

“How much did you know?””

“Not enough.””

“That's not an answer.””

Claire wiped her face.

“I knew Richard wanted control of the estate.””

“Why?””

“Because Eleanor changed the beneficiary.””

David looked at her.

“To Emma.””

Claire nodded.

“Richard thought if Eleanor died, you would inherit everything.””

David's face hardened.

“But the policy was changed to Emma.””

“Yes.””

“That's why he forged my signature.””

Claire nodded.

“He wanted to make it look like you transferred money to yourself.””

Emma finally understood.

“He was trying to make Dad look guilty.””

“Yes.””

David stared at the door.

“Why?””

Claire whispered, “Because Richard had debts.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Massive ones.””

David closed his eyes.

“So he killed Eleanor.””

Michael nodded.

“He thought she'd expose him.””

“And you?””

“I found out.””

Richard knocked.

“David! Open the door!””

David didn't move.

Richard shouted again.

“You need to hear me!””

David looked at Emma.

“Stay behind me.””

He unlocked the door.

Michael immediately said, “David—”

But David opened it.

Richard stood on the porch.

He looked exactly as Emma remembered.

Gray suit.

Blue tie.

Polite smile.

The same man who had brought flowers to every family gathering.

He raised his hands.

“David, please.””

David stared.

“You killed my wife.””

Richard's smile vanished.

“No.””

“You forged my signature.””

“No.””

“You stole from my daughter.””

Richard's eyes shifted toward Emma.

“No.””

“You changed the insurance documents.””

“I never—”

David shoved the photograph against his chest.

Richard looked at it.

For one second, his expression changed.

That was enough.

David whispered, “I knew it.””

Richard stepped backward.

“You don't understand.””

“I understand everything.””

“No.””

“You were there.””

“I was trying to fix something.””

“What?””

Richard's voice cracked.

“The brakes.””

Emma gasped.

David went completely still.

Richard closed his eyes.

“I didn't mean for her to die.””

Victoria covered her mouth.

Michael said quietly, “There it is.””

Richard looked at him.

“You.””

Michael shook his head.

“You should have left her alone.””

Richard's eyes hardened.

“You don't get to judge me.””

“I watched Eleanor die.””

Emma's knees weakened.

David caught her.

“What did you say?””

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

“I got to her after the crash.””

David stared.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you call me?””

“Because Richard was already there.””

Richard shouted, “I was trying to save her!””

Michael shook his head.

“You were checking whether she was alive.””

Richard looked away.

David's voice broke.

“Why?””

Richard finally looked at him.

“Because I was desperate.””

“For money?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“More than I could ever repay.””

David shook his head.

“You killed her for money.””

“I pushed her off the road.””

Emma cried out.

David stared at him.

Richard continued.

“I didn't touch her after the crash.””

Michael stepped forward.

“You changed the scene.””

Richard nodded.

“I panicked.””

David's face was wet with tears.

“You came to her funeral.””

“I had to.””

“You hugged my daughter.””

“I was trying to keep everything from falling apart.””

“You told Emma her mother was watching over her.””

Richard's voice broke.

“She was.””

David stared at him.

“Don't you dare.””

Silence.

Then Richard said something that changed everything.

“I didn't know Eleanor had already changed the policy.””

David frowned.

“What?””

“She changed it the day before she died.””

Emma looked at him.

“How do you know?””

Richard looked toward her.

“Because she sent me a copy.””

David's eyes narrowed.

“Why would she send you anything?””

“She was giving me one chance.””

“For what?””

“To confess.””

Richard reached into his jacket.

David stepped back.

Michael grabbed his wrist.

Richard pulled out a small envelope.

He held it toward David.

“Read it.””

David took it.

On the front was Eleanor's handwriting.

*For David, if Richard fails to tell you the truth.*

David opened it.

His hands trembled.

He read silently.

Then his knees nearly buckled.

Emma caught his arm.

“What does it say?””

David looked at her.

His voice barely existed.

“Your mother knew Richard was going to come after the money.””

Emma stared.

“And she knew Victoria was involved.””

Victoria began crying.

David continued.

“But she also wrote one more thing.””

“What?””

David looked at Emma.

“She said the money was never meant to make you rich.””

Emma frowned.

“Then what was it for?””

David handed her the letter.

Emma read the final lines.

Her breath caught.

*Emma is not just my beneficiary. She is the owner of something I need you to protect until she turns twenty-five.*

Emma looked up.

“Owner of what?””

David didn't know.

Richard did.

He whispered,

“The company.””

Emma stared.

“What company?””

Richard looked at David.

“Eleanor's company.””

David's face went blank.

“You told me she sold it.””

Richard shook his head.

“She never sold it.””

“Then what happened?””

“She put it in a trust.””

“For Emma.””

Emma's heart pounded.

“How much?””

Richard looked at her.

“Enough to make every dollar Victoria took look insignificant.””

Victoria sank to the floor.

David stared at his daughter.

“Emma…”

She looked at him.

“What?””

“Your mother left you the entire company.””

Emma couldn't speak.

May you like

Then Richard whispered,

“And the trust matures tomorrow.””
