Chapter 8: The Baby They Returned
The world stopped.
Not slowed.
Stopped.
Every sound disappeared.
The rain outside.
The hum of the baby monitor.
The faint buzzing of my phone still connected to Daniel.
Everything vanished except one sentence.
*The baby you gave birth to was not the baby they brought home.*
I looked down at Elijah.
My son.
My beautiful boy.
The same tiny hands that reached for my face every morning.
The same eyes that watched me when I sang to him at night.
The same child I had carried inside me for nine months.
And suddenly, a terrifying thought entered my mind.
What if I didn’t know him?
My knees weakened.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
“No.””
Margaret’s face crumpled.
“Naomi…”
“No.””
I stepped backward.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
“You’re lying.””
My voice grew louder.
“You are all lying.””
Daniel’s voice came through the phone.
“Naomi, listen to me.””
I turned toward the phone.
“Did you know?””
Silence.
That was all I needed.
My heart broke.
“Daniel.””
“I didn’t know.””
“You knew something.””
“Yes.””
My eyes burned.
“You knew there was a possibility that Elijah wasn’t…”
I couldn’t finish.
I couldn’t say the words.
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“I knew there were questions.””
“Questions?””
I looked at Margaret.
Then at the photograph.
“A mother does not have questions about her own baby.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The pain in my voice surprised even me.
“You don’t know what it feels like to look at your child every day and wonder if someone stole the truth from you.””
Nobody spoke.
Margaret lowered her head.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You were there when I gave birth?””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
My hands shook.
“Tell me what happened.””
Margaret took a deep breath.
“I was a nurse at St. Catherine’s Medical Center for twenty-seven years.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t I know that?””
“Because Robert Carter made sure my identity disappeared.””
My anger rose.
“Everyone keeps saying Robert like he was some kind of all-powerful person.””
Margaret looked at me sadly.
“He was.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“He was just a man.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“But powerful men don’t always need to break doors down.””
She looked at the photograph.
“Sometimes they just make people afraid to open them.””
I looked at the image again.
The newborn baby.
The bracelet.
The note.
“Tell me everything.””
Margaret nodded.
“The night Elijah was born, there were two babies delivered within minutes of each other.””
I froze.
“Two?””
“Yes.””
My heart started racing.
“Who was the other baby?””
Margaret hesitated.
“A child connected to the Carter family.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Your son’s birth was not the only birth Robert Carter was watching.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What are you saying?””
Margaret opened the folder.
Inside were more documents.
Hospital records.
Names.
Dates.
I scanned the pages.
Then stopped.
A mother’s name.
A name I recognized.
*Evelyn Carter.*
My eyes widened.
“No.””
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.””
“Evelyn had a baby?””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Daniel whispered through the phone:
“Naomi…”
I ignored him.
“What happened?””
Margaret looked down.
“Evelyn’s child was born with complications.””
I swallowed.
“And mine?””
“Healthy.””
The answer made my stomach turn.
“No.””
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“Robert believed the Carter family bloodline had to continue.””
I felt sick.
“You’re saying…”
She nodded.
“He wanted the healthier child to become the Carter heir.””
My hands covered my mouth.
“No.””
I looked at Elijah.
“No.””
Margaret stepped closer.
“Naomi, listen.””
“No.””
I backed away.
“You’re telling me someone switched babies?””
“I’m telling you what I saw.””
The room spun.
“Why?””
“Because Robert believed he was protecting the family.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does if you knew him.””
I looked at the photograph.
At the documents.
At the lies.
“Then why did Daniel say Elijah is his son?””
Margaret became quiet.
That silence scared me.
“Margaret.””
She looked at me.
“Because legally, he is.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at the hospital records.
“The child you took home was registered as Daniel Carter’s son.””
“But?””
She hesitated.
“But the biological records were altered.””
My breathing stopped.
“Whose DNA is in those records?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Naomi.””
I turned toward the phone.
“Tell me.””
A long pause.
Then:
“I don’t know.””
I stared.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“How can you not know?””
“Because my father destroyed the original results.””
I felt anger rise.
“Your father.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Yes.””
“He knew.””
“Yes.””
“He knew who my baby was.””
“Yes.””
“And he never told me.””
Silence.
That silence was the final wound.
I sat down on the edge of the bed.
Elijah reached toward me.
I immediately pulled him close.
No matter what anyone said.
No matter what documents existed.
No matter what secrets surrounded us.
He was my son.
My baby.
Nobody could change the years I had loved him.
Margaret watched me.
“There’s more.””
I looked up.
Of course there was.
“More?””
She nodded.
“The switch didn’t happen because Robert wanted money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He already controlled everything.””
“Then why?””
Margaret looked terrified.
“Because Evelyn’s child was dying.””
The room went silent.
I remembered Evelyn’s calm face.
Her cold eyes.
Her anger.
“You’re saying she knew?””
“Yes.””
“She agreed?””
Margaret shook her head.
“At first.””
“At first?””
“She didn’t know.””
I stared.
“Then who made the decision?””
Margaret looked toward the hallway.
Toward the rest of the house.
“Someone else.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Margaret whispered:
“The person who arranged the entire thing.””
The nursery door suddenly moved.
Everyone turned.
The handle slowly pressed down.
My heart stopped.
Someone was outside.
Margaret went pale.
“No.””
I stood up.
“Who is it?””
She whispered:
“He wasn’t supposed to come here.””
The door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Gray hair.
A familiar face.
I had seen him before.
Only once.
At Robert Carter’s funeral.
Daniel’s family lawyer.
Victor Hale.
But he wasn’t carrying a briefcase.
He wasn’t holding documents.
He was holding a small wooden box.
And his face looked broken.
“Naomi.””
I stepped back.
“What are you doing here?””
Victor looked at Elijah.
Then at me.
“I came to finish what Robert started.””
My anger exploded.
“You mean the lies?””
He closed his eyes.
“I mean the truth.””
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
I felt my chest tighten.
“You knew my baby was switched?””
Victor looked devastated.
“I knew Robert made a choice.””
“What choice?””
He opened the wooden box.
Inside was a tiny hospital bracelet.
Older than the one in the photograph.
His hands trembled.
“The choice to save one child…”
He looked at Elijah.
“By sacrificing another.””
I felt sick.
“Whose bracelet is that?””
Victor stared at the name.
Then whispered:
“The child everyone forgot.””
The room went cold.
“Victor.””
He looked at me.
And said the name I never expected.
“Daniel Carter.””
I froze.
“What?””
Victor’s eyes filled with guilt.
“The child who was supposed to inherit everything…”
He swallowed.
“Was not Elijah.””
My breath caught.
“Then who?””
Victor slowly turned the bracelet over.
A name was engraved on the back.
A name that made Daniel go silent on the phone.
A name that made Margaret start crying.
A name that changed everything.
*Daniel Carter Jr.*
I stared at the bracelet.
Then at my husband’s name.
Then at my sleeping son.
And for the first time, I understood.
The question was never who Elijah’s father was.
May you like
The question was…
*Who had been pretending to be Daniel Carter all these years?*
