Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Door

The shadow in the hallway didn’t move.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Elijah’s fingers tightened around my shirt as if even my eight-month-old son could feel the danger hanging in the air.

I stared at the dark figure beyond the kitchen entrance.

“Who is there?”” I demanded.

My voice sounded stronger than I felt.

No answer.

Then the person stepped forward.

And my heart dropped.

It was Thomas.

My husband’s older brother.

Daniel’s brother had not been inside our house in almost a year.

The last time I saw him, he had stood in our living room with a glass of whiskey in his hand, laughing as he told me that women “always became emotional after having children.””

I remembered Daniel’s expression that night.

The anger in his eyes.

The way he had quietly asked his brother to leave.

Now Thomas stood in my hallway wearing a dark jacket, his face unreadable.

“Naomi,” he said calmly.

I took a step back.

“What are you doing here?””

Thomas glanced at Margaret.

Then back at me.

“I could ask you the same thing.””

My fingers wrapped tighter around my phone.

“This is my house.””

A small smile appeared on his face.

Not a friendly smile.

A patient one.

The kind someone gives when they believe they have control.

“I know.””

The room became silent again.

Margaret looked between us.

“Thomas…”

He lifted a hand.

“Not now, Margaret.””

My stomach twisted.

Not now?

The words were casual.

Too casual.

Like they had done this before.

Like they had rehearsed conversations like this.

I looked at the woman who had cared for my child.

Then at the man who had never liked me.

“How long have you been here?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

“Thomas.””

“I came by to speak with Daniel.””

“Daniel isn’t here.””

“I noticed.””

My eyes narrowed.

“How?””

He looked toward my phone.

And suddenly I understood.

He had seen the message.

“You were with Daniel.””

It wasn’t a question.

Thomas remained quiet.

“Where is my husband?””

Margaret looked down.

Thomas sighed.

“You’re making this more complicated than it needs to be.””

I laughed once.

A sharp, empty sound.

“My baby was being forced to drink milk from a carton while your family’s housekeeper turned off his monitor, and you think I’m making things complicated?””

Thomas’s jaw tightened.

“I didn’t say that.””

“You didn’t have to.””

I stepped closer.

“Where is Daniel?””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Daniel?””

For a moment, there was only breathing.

Heavy breathing.

Then his voice came through.

“Naomi.””

The relief I felt lasted less than a second.

Because he sounded afraid.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

“Are you inside the house?””

I looked at Thomas.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Who is with you?””

My eyes stayed locked on my brother-in-law.

“Thomas.””

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Get away from him.””

My chest tightened.

“Daniel, what is happening?””

“Naomi, listen to me carefully.””

His voice dropped lower.

“Take Elijah and leave through the back door.””

I looked toward the kitchen exit.

“Why?””

“Because I don’t know how much he told you.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas suddenly moved.

Not toward me.

Toward the phone.

I stepped away immediately.

“Don’t come closer.””

His expression changed.

A flash of irritation.

Then it disappeared.

“Naomi, you’re misunderstanding everything.””

Daniel heard him.

“Is Thomas there?””

“Yes.””

Another pause.

Then Daniel said something I never expected.

“Margaret isn’t the one you need to be afraid of.””

I looked at the elderly housekeeper.

She flinched.

Thomas noticed.

And for the first time, I saw real panic on his face.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

“What did you do?””

“I’ll explain everything.””

“When?””

“Just get out of the house.””

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“No, Daniel. I am standing here with our son, your brother is in our hallway, and your housekeeper just hurt Elijah. I need answers now.””

The silence on the phone was unbearable.

Then Daniel spoke.

“There is something I should have told you before.””

I waited.

“Before we hired Margaret…”

Thomas interrupted.

“Daniel, stop.””

I turned toward him.

The command in his voice made me freeze.

Not because he was loud.

Because he sounded like someone used to being obeyed.

“You don’t get to decide what I know,” I said.

Thomas stared at me.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

“Then explain.””

He looked away.

That was the first honest reaction I had seen from him.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“Naomi, I need you to listen.””

I pressed the phone against my ear.

“Go on.””

“Margaret was not hired because she was a housekeeper.””

I looked at her.

She closed her eyes.

“She was hired because she worked for my father.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“My father used to have people watching the family.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does.””

Daniel sounded exhausted.

“My father didn’t trust anyone.””

A memory flashed through my mind.

Daniel’s father, Robert.

A wealthy businessman.

A man who had built his company from nothing.

A man who everyone described as disciplined and ruthless.

He had passed away three years ago.

I had only met him twice.

Both times, I felt like I was being interviewed instead of welcomed.

“What does your father have to do with my son?””

Another silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Everything.””

The word chilled me.

I looked at Elijah.

My baby was finally quiet.

But his eyes were open.

Watching.

Listening.

“Daniel,” I said slowly, “what are you saying?””

Before he could answer, Thomas stepped forward.

“Enough.””

I turned.

“You need to leave.””

The room went still.

Thomas continued.

“Take the baby upstairs. Pack a bag. Call whoever you need to call.””

I stared at him.

“Are you threatening me?””

“No.””

“Then why are you telling me what to do?””

“Because if you stay here, you’ll put yourself in danger.””

The strange thing was…

I believed him.

Not because I trusted him.

But because of his face.

Thomas looked genuinely terrified.

I looked at Margaret.

“Did you hurt my son because someone told you to?””

Her lips trembled.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I stepped closer.

“Look at me and say it again.””

She couldn’t.

“Margaret.””

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“I never wanted this.””

My heart sank.

“Wanted what?””

She covered her mouth.

Thomas immediately turned toward her.

“Don’t.””

That one word was enough.

Margaret went silent.

I felt something inside me crack.

They weren’t hiding a mistake.

They were hiding a plan.

“What were you trying to do?””

Nobody answered.

I walked toward Margaret.

“What were you trying to do to Elijah?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was supposed to make sure he…”

She stopped.

Thomas’s expression hardened.

“Margaret.””

But it was too late.

I had heard enough.

“Make sure he what?””

Margaret looked at me.

Her voice shook.

“I was supposed to make sure he showed signs.””

My stomach turned.

“Signs of what?””

She looked toward Thomas.

Then whispered:

“Of the condition.””

I froze.

“What condition?””

No one spoke.

Then Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“Naomi…”

I barely heard him.

“What condition, Daniel?””

The silence lasted too long.

And in that silence, I understood something.

Everyone knew something about my son.

Everyone except me.

I looked at Thomas.

“What condition?””

He stared at Elijah.

Then finally said:

“Your son wasn’t supposed to be born.””

The words felt like a physical blow.

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Thomas looked at me with a cold sadness.

“Daniel never told you why his father left him the company.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Because the inheritance came with a condition.””

My grip loosened around the phone.

“What does that have to do with Elijah?””

Thomas stepped closer.

And this time, there was no anger in his voice.

Only fear.

“Because Robert’s will named your son as the only person who could take everything away from us.””

My mind went blank.

“That’s impossible.””

“It isn’t.””

Daniel’s voice suddenly broke through the phone.

“Naomi, don’t listen to him.””

I looked down.

“Then tell me the truth.””

A long pause.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Naomi…”

The kitchen door behind Thomas slowly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there holding a folder.

A folder with my son’s name written across the front.

May you like

And beneath it was a word that made my entire body go cold.

*Inheritance.*
