Chapter 6: The Folder With My Name On It
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The photo remained on my screen.
A folder.
A desk.
A label.
*CARTER FAMILY — DANIEL'S WIFE*
And the date underneath.
Five years before I ever met Emily.
My mind couldn't connect the pieces.
Because how could my mother have a folder about my wife before my wife existed in my life?
Unless...
Unless it wasn't about Emily.
Unless it was about anyone who came before her.
I looked at Ethan.
"Explain.""
His face changed.
He knew exactly what I was looking at.
"Who sent that?""
I held up my phone.
"You tell me.""
He didn't answer.
"Who sent this?""
Ethan looked at the screen.
Then looked away.
And that was when I knew.
He wasn't surprised.
He was afraid.
"Daniel...""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"You don't get to say my name like we're having a normal conversation.""
His jaw tightened.
"I was trying to protect you.""
I almost laughed.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
My voice cracked.
"My mother said she was protecting the family.""
I pointed toward Emily.
"She was protecting her image.""
Then at Ethan.
"And you protected her silence.""
He looked down.
"I know.""
The admission was quiet.
But it hurt.
Because sometimes an apology arrived too late to mean anything.
I turned back to my phone.
"Five years.""
Ethan didn't respond.
"What happened five years ago?""
He rubbed his hands together.
"Mom started keeping records after Dad left.""
I frowned.
"What does Dad have to do with this?""
"Everything.""
The room went quiet.
Ethan sat down.
"After Dad left, Mom became obsessed with one thing.""
"What?""
"Never being blamed.""
I stared at him.
"Blamed for what?""
He looked at Emily.
Then back at me.
"Anything.""
He took a breath.
"She said people always abandoned her because they were influenced by someone else.""
"That's not an answer.""
"No.""
His eyes looked tired.
"It became an answer to her.""
I didn't understand.
"She started collecting proof.""
"Proof of what?""
"That everyone around her was difficult.""
I felt cold.
"Everyone?""
Ethan nodded.
"Relatives. Friends. Dad. His family.""
Then he looked at me.
"And your girlfriends.""
My stomach dropped.
"My what?""
Ethan swallowed.
"Before Emily.""
The words felt strange.
Like he was opening a door I never knew existed.
"What did Mom do?""
He didn't answer immediately.
That was enough.
"What did she do?""
"She investigated them.""
I stared.
"Investigated?""
"She asked questions. She looked through social media. She saved messages.""
My voice became low.
"Why?""
"She said she needed to know who was trying to take you away from her.""
I felt sick.
Because suddenly memories I had buried started returning.
My first serious relationship after college.
The constant comments from my mother.
"She's not really interested in your future.""
"She seems selfish.""
"I just noticed things you don't.""
I thought those were opinions.
Not strategies.
"Did you know?""
Ethan looked ashamed.
"Some of it.""
"Some?""
"I didn't know how bad it was.""
I looked at him.
"How convenient.""
He flinched.
I didn't apologize.
Because I was tired of everyone being protected except my wife.
A nurse entered.
"Mr. Carter?""
I turned.
"Yes?""
"Your wife needs some rest.""
I looked at Emily.
She nodded.
"I'll be okay.""
I hated leaving her alone.
But I needed answers.
"I'll be right outside.""
After I stepped into the hallway, Ethan followed.
"Daniel.""
I stopped.
"What?""
"Don't go home.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because Mom knows you're looking.""
"How?""
He hesitated.
Then:
"Because she has cameras.""
My face tightened.
"In our house?""
"No.""
He looked uncomfortable.
"Not only your house.""
The hallway suddenly felt too quiet.
"What does that mean?""
Ethan looked around before speaking.
"Mom has always believed information is power.""
"Stop talking like she's some kind of spy.""
"Daniel.""
His voice was serious.
"She has recordings.""
"Of what?""
"Family conversations.""
"Why?""
"Because she saves anything that can be used later.""
I thought about the video.
The note.
The messages.
The folder.
"Where is the archive?""
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't know.""
"You just said there was one.""
"I know there is. I don't know where.""
I stared.
"You expect me to believe that?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because she doesn't trust anyone.""
A bitter smile crossed his face.
"Not even me.""
That was the first thing he said that sounded completely honest.
I looked back through the hospital window.
Emily was lying still.
Alone.
Because of my family.
I opened the photo again.
"Who sent this?""
Ethan looked at it.
"I don't know.""
"Someone who wants me to find it.""
"Or someone who wants you to destroy yourself looking for it.""
I looked at him.
"What are you saying?""
"I'm saying Mom is not the only person who knows how to manipulate people.""
I froze.
"You think this is a trap?""
"I think you need to be careful.""
I wanted to dismiss him.
But I couldn't.
Because for the first time, he wasn't defending our mother.
He was warning me.
That scared me more.
I left the hospital at noon.
Not to go home.
To go somewhere else.
My mother's office.
If she had been keeping records, she kept them somewhere.
And my mother had always believed the best hiding place was somewhere everyone was afraid to look.
The building was quiet when I arrived.
She wasn't there.
That was almost too easy.
I used to have access because I helped her with business paperwork years ago.
The receptionist looked surprised.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Is my mother here?""
"No.""
"Did she leave instructions?""
The woman hesitated.
"She said if you came, I should tell you to leave.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did she?""
The receptionist looked uncomfortable.
"No.""
"Why?""
She lowered her voice.
"Because I think she wanted you to find something.""
I stared.
"What?""
The receptionist looked around.
Then reached under the desk.
She pulled out a small envelope.
"She left this yesterday.""
My heart started racing.
"She left it for me?""
"She said, 'If Daniel finally starts asking questions, give him this.''"
I took it.
"Did you open it?""
"No.""
I believed her.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
Not a document.
Not a message.
A picture of Emily.
But not the Emily I knew.
This was taken before we met.
She was standing outside a coffee shop.
Talking to someone.
Someone I recognized.
My mother.
I stared.
That was impossible.
Emily had told me she never met my mother until after we started dating.
I flipped the photo over.
There was writing on the back.
My mother's handwriting.
*"Subject: Emily Carter.""*
My breath stopped.
Below it:
*"Potential risk: High.""*
And underneath that:
*"Reason: She makes Daniel question me.""*
I dropped the photo.
Because suddenly the timeline changed.
My mother didn't start controlling Emily after we got married.
She started before.
Before the wedding.
Before the pregnancy.
Before Emily even knew what was happening.
I looked at the date.
My hands went numb.
The photograph had been taken six months before my first date with Emily.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice spoke.
"Daniel Carter?""
"Yes.""
"You found the file.""
I froze.
"Who is this?""
The man ignored my question.
"Listen carefully.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Your mother is not keeping records because she wants control.""
"Then why?""
A pause.
Then:
"Because she is building a case.""
"Against who?""
The man's voice became quieter.
"Against every person she thinks will leave her.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Who are you?""
The man breathed out.
"Someone who used to work for your mother.""
"And why are you calling me?""
Another pause.
Then he said:
"Because the folder with your wife's name is not the one you should be worried about.""
My heart started pounding.
"What do you mean?""
"The one with your name is.""
I went completely still.
"What folder?""
His answer came softly.
"The one your mother created when you were sixteen.""
The line went silent.
I stared at the office around me.
At the locked cabinets.
At the shelves.
At the life my mother had built behind my back.
Then the man added:
"Daniel...""
"Yes?""
"Whatever you do...""
May you like
A pause.
"Do not open the folder labeled with your childhood name.""
