Chapter 4: The Video She Thought Would Save Her
For five seconds, nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not Emily.
Not the woman on the phone.
The word *video* hung in the hospital room like something alive.
Something dangerous.
I looked at Emily.
Her face had gone completely pale.
"Sarah," I said slowly.
"What video?""
On the other end, I heard a shaky breath.
"I shouldn't have called.""
"Don't hang up.""
My voice came out sharper than I intended.
Emily reached for my hand.
I held onto hers.
"Sarah, please.""
A few seconds passed.
Then she whispered:
"Your mother recorded the entire thing.""
My stomach tightened.
"What thing?""
"October 14.""
The date again.
The day that had been haunting us since last night.
"I was there because Linda asked me to come over.""
"Why?""
"She said she needed someone to help prepare the nursery.""
Emily looked down.
I felt her fingers go cold.
Sarah continued.
"At first, I thought it was normal.""
Her voice sounded like someone forcing herself to walk through a painful memory.
"Your mother was talking about baby clothes and furniture. She was smiling.""
"Then Emily came home from work.""
I looked at my wife.
She closed her eyes.
"I remember that day," Emily whispered.
Sarah heard her.
"Emily?""
"Yes.""
There was a pause.
Then Sarah's voice cracked.
"Oh my God. You're with him.""
I looked at Emily.
She nodded slowly.
"Keep talking," I said.
Sarah swallowed.
"Linda changed when Emily walked in.""
"Changed how?""
"She became someone else.""
The answer was simple.
But it felt familiar.
"She started criticizing everything.""
Sarah continued.
"The nursery colors. The crib. The clothes Emily bought.""
Emily looked away.
"She said I was wasting money.""
Sarah paused.
"Then she told Emily she was lucky Daniel was patient with her.""
My jaw tightened.
That sounded exactly like my mother.
Not an insult.
A weapon disguised as advice.
"What happened next?"" I asked.
Sarah went quiet.
"Sarah?""
"I don't know how to explain it.""
"Try.""
A long breath.
"Linda placed her phone on the dresser.""
My heart stopped.
"She started recording.""
"Why?""
"I didn't know at the time.""
Sarah's voice became quieter.
"Later, I understood.""
"What did you understand?""
"She wanted evidence.""
I frowned.
"Evidence of what?""
"That Emily was 'unstable.''"
The room felt smaller.
"Your mother kept pushing.""
Sarah continued.
"She asked Emily why she was always so emotional. Why she couldn't accept help. Why she was making the family uncomfortable.""
Emily's eyes filled.
Sarah said:
"Emily tried to walk away.""
I squeezed my wife's hand.
"Then?""
"Linda stepped in front of her.""
My breathing slowed.
"She told Emily she wasn't leaving the conversation.""
Sarah paused.
"Then Emily said something I'll never forget.""
"What?""
"She said, 'You don't get to control me just because you helped raise Daniel.''"
For a moment, I felt proud.
Even terrified.
Because that sounded like my wife.
Sarah continued.
"Linda got angry.""
"How angry?""
"She grabbed Emily's arm.""
Emily flinched.
I noticed.
Even months later.
Her body remembered.
I stood up.
The anger inside me was almost impossible to control.
"Daniel," Emily whispered.
I sat back down.
Sarah kept talking.
"Emily pulled away.""
"Did my mother push her?""
Another silence.
Then:
"Yes.""
The word was barely audible.
But it destroyed me.
"She pushed her toward the dresser.""
Emily covered her face.
Sarah continued.
"Emily hit the edge.""
"Did she fall?""
"Not completely.""
"Then why did my mother say she was unstable?""
Sarah answered immediately.
"Because that was the plan.""
My eyes narrowed.
"What plan?""
"After Emily hit the dresser, Linda started crying.""
I frowned.
"Crying?""
"Yes.""
Sarah sounded disgusted.
"She changed instantly.""
I knew exactly what she meant.
"She hugged Emily and said she was sorry.""
Emily whispered:
"She did.""
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Her eyes stayed on the floor.
"Because two minutes later, she changed again.""
I turned back to the phone.
Sarah said:
"Linda told Emily that nobody would believe her.""
My chest tightened.
"She said Daniel would think she was hormonal.""
Emily's tears fell silently.
"She said the family would support her.""
Sarah stopped.
"And then she looked at me.""
"What did she say?""
Sarah's voice shook.
"She said, 'You saw how emotional she is. You'll tell Daniel the truth.''"
I closed my eyes.
The truth.
My mother's favorite word.
Even when she was creating lies.
"Sarah," I said.
"You said she recorded it.""
"Yes.""
"Where is the video?""
"I don't know.""
"You don't know?""
"I saw her save it.""
"Where?""
Sarah hesitated.
Then:
"She sent it to someone.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
Another pause.
"I only saw the first name.""
"Tell me.""
Sarah whispered:
"Ethan.""
Emily gasped.
I felt something inside me crack.
My brother.
Again.
"Are you sure?""
"Yes.""
"Why would she send it to him?""
Sarah's voice dropped.
"Because your mother knew he would protect her.""
I looked at the wall.
My family.
My own family.
A mother who hurt my wife.
A brother who watched.
Relatives who sat at a table and did nothing.
How many people had chosen silence?
"Sarah, I need that video.""
"I know.""
"Can you get it?""
"No.""
The answer came too quickly.
"Why?""
"Because Linda knows I saw it.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"She came to my house.""
My grip tightened.
"When?""
"Three weeks ago.""
"What happened?""
Sarah's voice became smaller.
"She told me she knew I was thinking about talking.""
"And?""
"She reminded me that my husband works for her company.""
I went silent.
"She threatened your job?""
"Not directly.""
Sarah laughed bitterly.
"Your mother is very careful. She never threatens. She just explains consequences.""
Emily looked at me.
That phrase.
The same pattern.
"What do you want from me?"" I asked.
Sarah answered:
"I want you to know your wife was telling the truth.""
The room went quiet.
Then:
"I should have helped her.""
I looked at Emily.
She was crying.
Not loudly.
Just silently.
Because maybe the hardest pain wasn't what happened.
It was knowing someone saw.
And still walked away.
"Sarah," I said.
"Yes?""
"Will you give a statement?""
A long pause.
"I will.""
I exhaled.
"Thank you.""
"But Daniel...""
"What?""
"Your mother knows.""
I froze.
"Knows what?""
"That I called you.""
The hospital room suddenly felt unsafe.
"How?""
"Because she has been watching.""
My eyes moved toward Emily.
"Watching what?""
Sarah lowered her voice.
"She knew about the hospital before you did.""
I felt cold.
"That's impossible.""
"Daniel.""
Sarah sounded afraid.
"Your mother has people everywhere.""
The call ended.
I sat there staring at my phone.
Emily touched my arm.
"Daniel.""
I looked at her.
"We need to leave.""
The words came out immediately.
"No.""
She blinked.
"No?""
"We need to leave the house.""
Her face changed.
"Today?""
"Today.""
I stood.
"I don't care if it's a hotel. A friend's place. Anywhere.""
"Daniel...""
"No.""
My voice broke.
"I brought you back to a place where she had a key.""
Emily watched me.
"You don't know what you're saying.""
"I know exactly what I'm saying.""
I looked at her.
"My mother has been entering our home whenever she wanted.""
A tear slipped down.
"And I called it family.""
Before Emily could answer, the door opened.
The doctor walked in.
But she wasn't alone.
Behind her stood a police officer.
My heart dropped.
"Mr. Carter?""
I stood.
"Yes?""
The officer looked at Emily.
Then at me.
"We need to ask you both some questions.""
"About what?""
The officer held up a phone.
Not mine.
Not Emily's.
A screenshot.
A message.
From my mother.
My blood went cold when I saw the words.
*"If Daniel starts asking questions, show him what his wife did first.""*
The officer looked at me.
"Your mother reported that your wife attacked her.""
Emily went completely still.
May you like
And then the officer said the sentence that made everything worse.
"She says she has video evidence.""
