Chapter 9: The Truth Behind The Missing Girl
The line went silent.
But the woman’s words stayed.
*By the person who spent six years pretending she was missing.*
I stood frozen in the attic, surrounded by boxes full of secrets.
Tyler was watching my face.
He didn’t ask what she said.
He already knew it was bad.
“Daniel?””
Rachel’s voice came through the phone again.
“Are you still there?””
“Yes.””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
“What do you mean she was taken?””
A shaky breath.
“I mean Lily didn’t run away.””
My heart pounded.
“Then what happened?””
“I saw her that night.””
The attic suddenly felt smaller.
“Where?””
“At Vanessa’s house.””
I looked at Tyler.
His face went pale.
“My aunt was there?””
“Yes.””
Rachel continued.
“She came over because Vanessa called her.””
“Why?””
“She said Lily was out of control.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The same words.
The same pattern.
“Rachel, tell me exactly what happened.””
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then:
“Lily was crying.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“She wanted to leave.””
“Leave where?””
“She said she wanted to live with someone else.””
The words hurt because they sounded familiar.
A child wanting escape.
A child wanting safety.
“And Vanessa?””
Rachel’s voice lowered.
“Vanessa was angry.””
“How angry?””
“Angry enough that I was scared.””
Tyler looked away.
Like he had heard this before.
“She kept saying Lily was destroying her life.””
My jaw tightened.
“What happened next?””
Rachel took a shaky breath.
“I left.””
I stared.
“You left?””
“I thought Vanessa would calm down.””
The regret in her voice was obvious.
“I thought she was just overwhelmed.””
“And then?””
“The next morning, Lily was gone.””
The silence afterward felt unbearable.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
“I tried.””
Her voice broke.
“But Vanessa already had a story.””
“What story?””
“She told everyone Lily ran away.””
I looked at the missing child article again.
“She convinced people?””
“She convinced enough people.””
My stomach turned.
“How?””
“Because she was the grieving mother.””
The sentence made me angry.
Because I understood.
People wanted to comfort grieving parents.
They wanted simple answers.
They wanted to believe tragedy happened to good people.
“Rachel, where is Lily?””
Another pause.
Then:
“I don’t know.””
The answer crushed me.
“But I know one thing.””
“What?””
“She was alive after that night.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I saw her.””
“When?””
“Three days after she disappeared.””
My heart nearly stopped.
“Where?””
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“Inside a car.””
“What car?””
“A black SUV.””
My mind went blank.
Black SUV.
The same one Vanessa had arrived in at the park.
“Who was driving?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Vanessa.””
I closed my eyes.
Tyler whispered:
“What did she say?””
I looked at him.
I didn’t answer.
Because I wasn’t sure I could.
I found Vanessa two hours later.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I needed answers.
She was sitting alone in her car outside the house.
Like she had been waiting.
When I walked toward her window, she didn’t look surprised.
She lowered the glass.
“You talked to Rachel.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stared.
“You knew she would tell me.””
Vanessa looked tired.
“I knew eventually someone would.””
My anger rose.
“You lied to everyone.””
Her eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect my children.””
“Your children?””
I laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed them.””
She looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Where is Lily?””
Her entire body froze.
For the first time, I saw real fear.
Not anger.
Not manipulation.
Fear.
“You found out.””
I stared.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“She’s safe.””
The answer stunned me.
“Safe?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“I can’t tell you.””
I almost couldn’t believe her.
“After everything?””
She looked at me.
“You think I’m the only person who made mistakes.””
“What does that mean?””
She looked down.
“It means the truth is bigger than me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You don’t get to do that.””
“Do what?””
“Hide behind another secret.””
She wiped her face.
“Lily is alive.””
The world stopped.
I stared at her.
“What?””
“She’s alive.””
My voice dropped.
“Where?””
Vanessa looked away.
“She has a different name now.””
My chest tightened.
“You changed her identity?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I protected her.””
I wanted to hate that answer.
But the fear in her eyes complicated everything.
“From who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She whispered:
“From the person who hurt her.””
I stared.
“You?””
Her eyes closed.
A tear slipped down.
“I was not the only person who failed her.””
The sentence felt familiar.
The same thing she had said before.
But this time, I needed proof.
“Then tell me.””
She looked at me.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you, they’ll come after her.””
“Who?””
Her hands trembled.
“Your mother.””
I stepped back.
Again.
The same name.
My mother.
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“She had nothing to do with Lily.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You still believe that?””
I said nothing.
“Daniel, your mother found out.””
“Found out what?””
“That Lily was not missing.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She knew where Lily was.””
The anger returned.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying everyone thinks I’m the villain because I let them.””
I stared.
“You’re saying my mother hid Lily?””
“I’m saying your mother knows the truth.””
I couldn’t breathe.
Too many secrets.
Too many people.
Too many versions of reality.
Then my phone rang.
My mother.
I answered immediately.
“Mom.””
Her voice came fast.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“How did you know something was wrong?””
Silence.
A terrible silence.
“Mom.””
She whispered:
“Did Vanessa tell you about Lily?””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.””
Another pause.
Then:
“I was hoping you never found out this way.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Finally:
“Because I was there.””
I froze.
“Where?””
“When Lily disappeared.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“I was there.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching me.
Like she already knew.
My mother’s voice trembled.
“Daniel, you need to listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You need to explain.””
“Please.””
“Why were you there?””
Silence.
Then she said:
“Because Lily called me.””
I stopped.
“She called you?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
My mother started crying.
“She said she was scared.””
The world became silent.
“What did you do?””
A long pause.
Then:
“I went to get her.””
My heart pounded.
“And?””
My mother whispered:
“I found Vanessa.””
I waited.
“And I found out the person Lily was afraid of…”
She stopped.
“Mom.””
Her voice broke.
“It wasn’t Vanessa.””
I froze.
“Then who was it?””
My mother didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Because the next sound I heard wasn’t her voice.
It was a knock.
A knock at my brother’s front door.
My mother whispered:
“Daniel…”
My blood turned cold.
“Don’t open that door.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because the person who knows where Lily is…”
Another knock.
May you like
Harder this time.
“…is standing outside.””
