Chapter 4: The Video Nobody Was Supposed To See

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The video file sat on my phone screen.

A black square.

No preview.

No name.

No clue who had sent it.

Only the words underneath:

*Watch this before you decide who the real victim is.*

My first instinct was to delete it.

Not because I didn’t want to know the truth.

Because I was afraid of what truth might come next.

I had spent the last few hours watching my entire understanding of my family collapse piece by piece.

First, it was the plate of garbage.

Then Emma’s words.

Then the teacher’s phone call.

Then Tyler’s secret.

And now this.

Another piece of a puzzle I didn’t even know existed.

“Daniel?””

Michael’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

He was watching me carefully.

“Are you going to play it?””

I looked toward Emma.

She was sitting at the kitchen counter, coloring on a napkin with an old crayon Michael had found.

For the first time all evening, she looked like a normal five-year-old.

Not scared.

Not silent.

Just a little girl drawing messy flowers.

I walked into the living room.

“I need to know.””

Michael nodded.

“But don’t watch it alone.””

I sat beside him.

Then I pressed play.

The screen stayed black for three seconds.

Then a video appeared.

It looked like security footage.

A hallway.

A date stamp in the corner.

The quality wasn’t great, but I recognized the location immediately.

My house.

The camera angle showed the kitchen.

My breath caught.

The footage was from two weeks earlier.

I watched myself leave for work that morning.

I watched Emma standing by the door, waving goodbye.

I watched Vanessa close the door behind me.

Then everything changed.

Vanessa turned around.

Her smile disappeared.

“Go upstairs.””

Even without hearing her clearly, I knew she was speaking to Emma.

My daughter appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

“Why?””

The audio was faint but understandable.

Vanessa walked closer.

“Because I said so.””

Emma didn’t move.

“I want to help.””

“No.””

Vanessa pointed upstairs.

“Your job is to stay out of the way.””

The video continued.

I watched my five-year-old daughter slowly walk upstairs.

Then Vanessa looked toward the dining room.

Tyler and Madison entered.

And what happened next made my stomach twist.

Vanessa smiled.

A completely different smile.

“Come sit down.””

The footage jumped forward.

A few minutes later, food was placed on the table.

The same food.

Pizza.

Chicken.

Fries.

Everything.

Then Emma came back downstairs.

She was holding a drawing.

A picture she had probably made for me.

She walked toward the table.

“Mommy, look.””

Vanessa didn’t even look at it.

“Not now.””

Emma stood there.

“I made it for Daddy.””

Vanessa sighed.

“Emma, do you always have to interrupt?””

My jaw tightened.

Michael looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

The video continued.

Emma sat down.

Then Vanessa moved the pizza box away.

“No.””

Emma looked confused.

“No what?””

“This is for Tyler and Madison.””

“But I’m hungry.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“You ate earlier.””

“I did?””

“Yes.””

The lie was so casual.

So effortless.

It made my skin crawl.

Emma shook her head.

“I only had cereal.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Don’t argue with me.””

The video froze for a second.

Then continued.

The next few minutes showed something I would never forget.

Vanessa taking a plate.

Putting three crusts on it.

And placing it on the floor.

Not the table.

The floor.

Then she said something.

The audio cracked.

I turned the volume up.

I heard it.

Clearly.

“Be grateful.””

My hands started shaking.

Emma looked at the plate.

“Can I have a slice?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked toward the dining table.

“Because this is what happens when you don’t understand your place.””

Michael whispered something.

I didn’t hear him.

I couldn’t.

Because my eyes were fixed on my daughter’s face.

The way she looked down.

The way she quietly picked up the plate.

Like she already knew arguing wouldn’t help.

The video ended.

I sat there completely still.

My phone slipped slightly in my hand.

Michael was the first one to speak.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His expression was serious.

“You need to report this.””

I stared at the frozen screen.

“I know.””

But there was another feeling underneath the anger.

Something worse.

Shame.

Because I kept thinking about all the times Emma had tried to tell me.

And all the times I had been too busy.

Too tired.

Too willing to believe everything was okay.

My phone rang.

This time, I recognized the number.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“What?””

Her voice came immediately.

“Where is Emma?””

I looked toward the kitchen.

“She’s safe.””

“Safe?””

Her voice became sharp.

“Daniel, don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Act like I’m some monster.””

I closed my eyes.

“You made my daughter eat garbage.””

“That was one mistake.””

“No.””

My voice lowered.

“That was a choice.””

Silence.

Then she said:

“You watched the video.””

My entire body went still.

“How do you know about the video?””

Another pause.

Too long.

“Vanessa.””

She exhaled.

“I knew someone would send it.””

The room became silent.

Michael looked at me.

“You knew?””

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice was shaking now.

“I don’t.””

She lowered her voice.

“Daniel, there are things you don’t know about Tyler and Madison.””

I stood up.

“Funny. Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell me.””

“I can’t.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

“Because if you find out everything, you won’t just leave me.””

She stopped.

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

No answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“Daniel, I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

“I was trying to protect my children.””

I laughed bitterly.

“By hurting mine?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Another pause.

Then she whispered:

“You don’t know what happened before you.””

The sentence hung there.

Before me.

Before our marriage.

Before Emma.

Before everything.

“Who sent the video?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Who?””

Finally, she said:

“Someone who wants to destroy me.””

“And why would they want that?””

Her breathing changed.

Like she was scared.

“Because they know what I did.””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Michael looked at me.

“What did she say?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because one sentence kept repeating in my mind.

*They know what I did.*

I walked back into the kitchen.

Emma looked up.

“Daddy?””

I forced myself to smile.

“Yes?””

“Are we going home?””

The question nearly broke me.

I sat beside her.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Why?””

I took her tiny hand.

“Because sometimes home is not a place.””

She looked confused.

“It isn’t?””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Home is where you’re safe.””

She leaned against me.

For a moment, I thought the worst was over.

I thought I had finally seen the truth.

I thought Vanessa’s cruelty was the whole story.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

Different number.

Different sender.

This time, there was a name attached.

*Tyler.*

The message contained only six words.

*Please don’t hate my mom.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*You don’t know why she did it.*

My heartbeat quickened.

A third message came through.

*But I do.*

I looked at Michael.

“Tyler knows.””

The phone buzzed again.

May you like

One final message appeared.

*Meet me alone. I’ll tell you what happened to my sister.*
