Chapter 6: The Morning They Planned To Take Everything

Tomorrow morning.

Those two words sat on the page like a countdown.

Not a possibility.

Not a threat.

A plan.

I read the document again, hoping I had misunderstood.

I hadn’t.

Notice of Intent to Transfer Property Ownership.

Scheduled appointment.

9:00 a.m.

The next day.

My eyes moved to the signature section.

The names.

The approvals.

The details.

Someone had been preparing to move my mother out of the equation completely.

And they had been doing it quietly.

Carefully.

Patiently.

Daniel watched me read.

“I understand this is overwhelming.””

I looked up.

“Overwhelming?””

My voice was almost a whisper.

“My mother was treated like a maid in the house I bought for her, someone forged my signature, and now I find out they were planning to transfer ownership?””

Daniel didn’t look away.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“That’s not overwhelming.””

He paused.

“That’s deliberate.””

The word landed hard.

Deliberate.

Not accidental.

Not confusion.

Not a family misunderstanding.

A plan.

My mother sat down slowly.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Mrs. Ellis, can I ask you a few questions?””

She nodded.

“Did you ever agree to sell this property?””

“No.””

“Did you ever sign a document allowing someone else to sell it?””

“No.””

“Did anyone explain the documents you signed over the past two years?””

My mother looked down.

Her silence answered.

Daniel sighed quietly.

“That’s what I was afraid of.””

Khloe suddenly stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked angry.

But underneath it, I saw panic.

“You’re acting like we planned some huge crime.””

Daniel calmly looked at her.

“I haven’t accused anyone of a crime.””

“Then why are you here?””

“Because your mother contacted my office.””

Khloe’s face changed.

“She did?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Daniel glanced at his notes.

“Eleven days ago.””

My mother looked confused.

“I don’t remember.””

Daniel softened his voice.

“You spoke with my assistant.””

My mother shook her head.

“I never called.””

I looked at her.

“Mom.””

She looked frightened.

“I promise you, Natalie, I didn’t.””

Daniel opened another file.

“Someone called from a number connected to this house.””

Everyone looked at Julian.

His face remained still.

Too still.

Daniel continued.

“The caller identified herself as Martha Ellis.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“But it wasn’t me.””

I looked at Julian.

“You impersonated her?””

He immediately reacted.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel watched him carefully.

“I didn’t say who made the call.””

Julian stopped.

That tiny pause told me everything.

For the first time, I saw him lose control.

Not completely.

But enough.

Khloe noticed too.

“Julian?””

He ignored her.

“This is getting out of hand.””

I looked at him.

“You keep saying that.””

He turned.

“Because it is.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It’s getting harder for you to control.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You think you’ve figured everything out?””

“I think I’m finally seeing what was happening in front of me.””

He laughed.

A cold, humorless laugh.

“You really think you’re the hero here?””

The question surprised me.

Not because of what he said.

Because of how much he believed it.

He genuinely thought he was justified.

“I protected this family.””

I stared at him.

“You made my mother work in her own home.””

“I kept this house running.””

“You took her money.””

“I managed resources.””

“You locked her out of her office.””

“She was overwhelmed.””

“You controlled her accounts.””

“She needed help.””

Every excuse.

Every lie.

Wrapped in something that almost sounded reasonable.

That was what made people like Julian dangerous.

They never saw themselves as villains.

They saw themselves as necessary.

Daniel picked up the transfer document.

“Mr. Carter, who prepared this paperwork?””

Julian looked at him.

“A legal service.””

“Which one?””

“I don’t remember.””

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“You don’t remember the company handling a six-hundred-thousand-dollar property transfer?””

Julian said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“And you don’t remember why the transfer was scheduled for tomorrow?””

Silence.

I looked at Khloe.

She looked terrified now.

“Did you know?””

She looked at me.

“I…”

“Did you know they were trying to transfer the house?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

I studied her.

“Are you sure?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

More than the answer would have.

“Khloe.””

She looked down.

“I knew there was paperwork.””

My chest tightened.

“What kind of paperwork?””

“I thought…”

She stopped.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Say it.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought Julian was putting things in order.””

“In order?””

She nodded.

“He said if something happened to Mom, we needed protection.””

I looked at my mother.

“Protection from what?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was obvious.

They weren’t protecting Mom.

They were protecting themselves from losing access to her.

Daniel closed the folder.

“Mr. Carter has been using the power of attorney to create the appearance that your mother authorized these actions.””

I looked at him.

“Can he legally do that?””

“Not if the documents were obtained through deception or if he exceeded the authority granted.””

“And the fake signature?””

Daniel looked serious.

“That changes everything.””

Julian’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know that signature is fake.””

I looked at him.

“I do.””

Everyone turned toward me.

I held up the page.

“Because I know my own signature.””

Julian smiled slightly.

“You’re not a handwriting expert.””

“No.””

I looked at Daniel.

“But someone else is.””

Daniel nodded.

“I already requested a preliminary review.””

Julian’s face changed.

“You did what?””

“I became concerned after seeing the documents your mother provided.””

I looked at Julian.

“What documents?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he looked at my mother.

“Mrs. Ellis gave me copies of several papers she found hidden in her office.””

My mother looked shocked.

“I did?””

Daniel nodded.

“Someone had placed them behind a drawer.””

I turned to her.

“You found them?””

She slowly nodded.

“I remember now.””

Her voice was quiet.

“A few weeks ago, I was looking for my old tax papers.””

She looked at the floor.

“I found a folder.””

“What was inside?””

“Documents.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was scared.””

I softened.

“Scared of what?””

She looked toward Julian.

The answer was immediate.

I felt my entire body go cold.

“Mom.””

She whispered,

“He told me if I caused problems, you would lose everything.””

I looked at Julian.

The room became silent.

“What?””

My mother wiped her face.

“He said because you were overseas, there were things you didn’t understand.””

My hands curled into fists.

“He threatened me?””

Julian immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why would she say that?””

“She misunderstood.””

My laugh was quiet.

“Everyone misunderstands you, apparently.””

He stepped forward.

“You need to be careful.””

Daniel immediately moved between us.

“That’s enough.””

Julian stopped.

The power in the room shifted.

Because for the first time, someone was there who wasn’t afraid of him.

Daniel looked at him.

“You should not contact Mrs. Ellis about these documents without legal counsel present.””

Julian stared.

“Are you threatening me?””

“No.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“I’m informing you.””

Then he turned to me.

“I recommend you do not leave this house tonight.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

His expression became serious.

“Because if they were prepared to transfer ownership tomorrow, they may already know the paperwork failed.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means people who have spent two years building control don’t usually give it up peacefully.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Then the entire house went dark.

My mother gasped.

“Did the power go out?””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“No.””

He looked at the screen.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

He turned the phone toward me.

A notification appeared.

*Security system disabled.*

My heart started pounding.

“Who disabled it?””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Then toward the back door.

“I don’t know.””

A second later, we heard it.

A sound from upstairs.

A drawer opening.

Then footsteps.

Someone was inside the house.

But everyone who belonged there was standing in the room with me.

And then my mother whispered the words that made my blood run cold.

“Natalie…”

She grabbed my arm.

“The office.””

I looked toward the dark hallway.

The locked office.

May you like

The room Julian had refused to open.

And from upstairs came the sound of paper being torn.
