Chapter 7: The Bride Who Knew Too Much
The moment my eyes met Vanessa’s, everything around me disappeared.
The ballroom.
The guests.
The expensive decorations.
The wedding I had spent months planning.
None of it mattered.
Because the woman standing in front of me was supposed to become my wife.
And now I didn’t know if she was the person who loved me most…
or the person who had been hiding the truth from me.
“Ethan…”
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
I watched her carefully.
The tears in her eyes looked real.
But after everything that had happened tonight, I no longer knew what was real.
“You knew.””
The words came out quietly.
Vanessa shook her head immediately.
“No.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
Her face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
“I’m not lying.””
“Then why did you look at me like that when I got the message?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
And that silence answered more than words could.
Behind her, Diane stepped forward.
“Ethan, you need to stop this.””
I turned toward her.
She looked different now.
The confidence was gone.
The superiority was gone.
But somehow, that made me trust her even less.
“You have spent this entire night deciding who belongs and who doesn’t.””
My voice hardened.
“You called my father trash.””
Diane flinched.
I continued.
“You tried to throw him out of my wedding.””
She looked away.
“And now I find out your family may have been connected to my mother’s death.””
“That is absurd.””
“Is it?””
My father’s voice came from behind me.
Calm.
Controlled.
But dangerous.
Diane looked at him.
“Arthur, you cannot accuse people without proof.””
My father stared at her.
“I agree.””
That surprised everyone.
Including me.
Then he continued.
“Which is why I spent twenty-seven years collecting it.””
Claire stepped forward with the folder.
“Mr. Bennett, should I bring the remaining documents?””
My father nodded.
“Not yet.””
He looked at me.
“This decision belongs to Ethan.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He stepped closer.
“Your life has been controlled by secrets for too long.””
His eyes moved briefly toward my grandfather.
“By people deciding what you should know.””
Then toward Richard.
“By people deciding what you should believe.””
Finally, toward Vanessa.
“Tonight, you choose what happens next.””
That was the most painful part.
Because I didn’t want to choose.
I wanted my old life back.
The simple life.
The one where my father was just my father.
The one where my biggest problem was whether the wedding flowers matched the invitations.
But that life was gone.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me the truth.””
She swallowed.
“What do you want to know?””
I almost couldn’t believe the question.
“Everything.””
Her eyes filled.
“Ethan…”
“Everything.””
A long silence followed.
Then Vanessa slowly nodded.
“I knew your father was wealthy.””
The words hit me like a slap.
I stared at her.
“How?””
She looked down.
“My father told me.””
The entire room became quiet.
Diane closed her eyes.
Like she already knew where this was going.
“When?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Before we met.””
My chest tightened.
Before we met.
“You knew who I was?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“Not like that.””
“Explain.””
She wiped away a tear.
“My father told me about Arthur Bennett years ago. He said there was a man who built an empire but stayed hidden.””
She looked at my father.
“I didn’t know you were his son.””
“Then how did you find out?””
Vanessa looked at Diane.
Then back at me.
“When we got serious.””
My stomach dropped.
“You investigated me?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I swear, Ethan. I didn’t.””
“Then what?””
She took a breath.
“My father recognized your last name.””
Silence.
“My father knew about the Bennett family.””
I looked at my father.
He didn’t react.
That worried me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because I thought it didn’t matter.””
“Didn’t matter?””
My voice rose.
“My entire life was connected to this.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The words came out harder than I intended.
But I couldn’t stop.
“You stood there while your mother insulted him.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I was wrong.””
That was the first honest thing she had said.
And somehow, it hurt more.
“I should have stopped her.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I should have.””
The room was silent.
Then my grandfather spoke.
“She was not the only one who knew.””
Everyone turned.
Charles Whitmore looked exhausted.
“I knew Arthur had a son.””
I stared at him.
“You knew about me?””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
His face tightened.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
My father looked at me.
I knew he felt that.
Because he had said those exact words.
Charles lowered his eyes.
“Your mother made me promise something.””
“What?””
“That if anything happened to her, I would stay away.””
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does when you understand why.””
He looked at my father.
“Eleanor knew people would come after you.””
My father nodded.
“She knew her family would blame me.””
Charles continued.
“And she knew if they couldn’t reach Arthur, they would reach Ethan.””
A chill moved through me.
“So you all hid me.””
Nobody denied it.
That was the worst part.
They all made decisions about my life.
All of them.
My father.
My grandfather.
Vanessa.
Maybe everyone.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Ethan, I need to tell you something else.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
My heart stopped.
Not another letter.
Not another secret.
She walked toward me.
“I found this three months ago.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
“What is it?”” I asked.
She handed it to me.
I recognized the handwriting instantly.
My mother’s.
My hands began shaking.
“Where did you get this?””
Vanessa looked at my grandfather.
“My father had it.””
The room froze.
My grandfather stared at her.
“What?””
“My father kept a box of documents from years ago.””
She looked terrified.
“I found it when I was looking for something else.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was another letter.
Shorter than the first.
Only a few lines.
But the first sentence destroyed me.
Arthur, if you are reading this, it means they found out.
My father stepped closer.
“Ethan…”
I kept reading.
I know you want to fight. I know you want revenge. But please promise me one thing.
My hands trembled.
Protect our son.
A tear fell.
Then I reached the final line.
The line that made the entire room disappear.
And if Ethan ever meets the Whitmore family again, make sure he knows the truth about the person who betrayed me.
I looked up.
My father was staring at the letter.
My grandfather looked terrified.
Richard looked frozen.
Diane’s face had gone pale.
And Vanessa whispered:
“There’s a name written underneath.””
I looked back down.
There was one final sentence.
One name.
The person my mother believed betrayed her.
The person responsible for everything.
And when I read it, my entire body went cold.
Because it wasn’t Richard.
It wasn’t Diane.
It wasn’t Vanessa’s father.
It was someone standing only a few feet away from me.
Someone who had spent the entire night pretending to protect me.
Someone I had trusted my whole life.
May you like
The name on the page was:
*Arthur Bennett.*
