Chapter 9: The Woman Who Owned Every Lie

The key turned slowly.

One click.

Then another.

The sound was impossibly loud in the darkness.

My entire body froze.

Victoria.

My aunt.

The woman who had hugged me at my engagement party.

The woman who had kissed my forehead and called me her “little girl.””

The woman who had stood beside me while I planned a wedding she was secretly trying to destroy.

Nolan moved instantly.

He grabbed my arm and pulled me behind him.

“Stay quiet.””

The darkness swallowed us.

The door handle moved.

But the lock didn’t open.

Victoria paused.

Then she laughed softly from the other side.

“I know you’re in there.””

My blood ran cold.

Nolan’s eyes narrowed.

“How?””

I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

She had always known.

The question was how much.

Victoria knocked gently.

Not like someone trying to break in.

Like someone visiting family.

“Emily?””

Her voice was warm.

Almost loving.

“Sweetheart, I know today has been difficult.””

My hands curled into fists.

Difficult.

That was the word she chose.

Not betrayal.

Not manipulation.

Not a destroyed wedding.

Difficult.

“I know you’re confused,” she continued.

“But I can explain everything.””

I almost laughed.

The nerve.

After everything.

After seven years of secrets.

After trying to take my father’s company.

She still believed she could talk her way out.

Nolan leaned closer.

“Don’t answer.””

I nodded.

Victoria waited.

Then her voice changed.

Only slightly.

But I heard it.

The warmth disappeared.

“Emily.””

The softness became something sharper.

“You’ve always been a good child.””

A chill moved through me.

“You trusted people.””

Silence.

“That was always your weakness.””

My breathing stopped.

Nolan looked at me.

Because we both heard it.

Not regret.

Not guilt.

Pride.

Victoria continued.

“You trust your brother.””

A pause.

“You trusted Derek.””

Another pause.

“And you trusted Clara.””

My jaw tightened.

“You trusted everyone except the one person who was actually trying to protect this family.””

The door suddenly shook.

Not hard.

Just enough to remind us she could force it if she wanted.

Nolan moved toward the side of the room.

There was another exit through the office hallway.

He motioned for me to follow.

But before we moved, Victoria spoke again.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

“I know Nolan told you about your father.””

My heart dropped.

How?

“How does she know?”” I whispered.

Nolan’s expression hardened.

Someone had told her.

Or someone had been listening.

Victoria continued.

“He always was too sentimental.””

Her voice became almost amused.

“Your father made one mistake.””

The darkness seemed heavier.

“He trusted his children.””

Nolan clenched his fists.

I had never seen him react to anyone’s words like that.

Not even our enemies.

Victoria had found the one place she could hurt him.

“Emily, open the door.””

No response.

“I’m not here to hurt you.””

I almost laughed.

But then she said something that made me freeze.

“I’m here because someone else is.””

Nolan looked at me.

Victoria continued.

“Derek.””

My heart stopped.

“He lied to you.””

A pause.

“He lied to me too.””

I frowned.

What?

“That man was never loyal.””

Her voice became colder.

“He thought he could use my plan for his own benefit.””

Nolan whispered:

“She’s trying to manipulate us.””

I knew.

But the problem was…

Some of it might be true.

Victoria had spent years mastering lies.

The most dangerous lies were always mixed with truth.

“I know about the airport,” Victoria said.

My stomach tightened.

“I know about the message.””

Another pause.

“And I know you found the invitation.””

Silence.

Then:

“But you don’t know the most important thing.””

Nolan looked at me.

“What?””

Victoria answered before he could.

“Your father’s evidence is not in the dress.””

My blood ran cold.

She knew.

“She’s bluffing,” Nolan whispered.

But I wasn’t sure.

Victoria continued.

“Because the dress was never the hiding place.””

My fingers tightened.

“What did Dad hide?””

For the first time, I almost spoke.

Almost.

But Nolan stopped me.

Victoria smiled through the door.

I could hear it.

“You always were curious, Emily.””

Her voice softened.

“That’s why your father loved you.””

My chest tightened.

“Because you asked questions.””

A pause.

“Unfortunately, questions get people killed.””

Nolan’s expression changed.

He grabbed my hand.

We moved silently toward the office exit.

But then Victoria spoke again.

And the words stopped me.

“Nolan.””

My brother froze.

“How do you know his name?””

Victoria laughed quietly.

“Oh, Nolan.””

The way she said it was terrifying.

“I knew everything about him.””

The door handle moved again.

“You think you spent seven years investigating me?””

Silence.

“I spent seven years watching you.””

Nolan looked genuinely shocked.

Victoria continued.

“You weren’t protecting Emily from me.””

My heart raced.

“You were protecting Emily from yourself.””

Nolan’s face changed.

I whispered:

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Victoria did.

“Ask your brother what happened after your father died.””

My eyes moved to Nolan.

“No.””

His voice was immediate.

Not to Victoria.

To me.

“No?””

I stared.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Victoria laughed.

“There it is.””

The satisfaction in her voice made me sick.

“The truth always breaks families faster than money does.””

Nolan stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

But I couldn’t stop.

Because I needed the truth.

“Tell me.””

His eyes met mine.

“Emily.””

“Tell me.””

A long silence.

Then Nolan said:

“After Dad died…”

His voice became quieter.

“I made a deal.””

My heart sank.

“With who?””

He looked at the door.

Then at me.

“With Victoria.””

Everything went silent.

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

Nolan closed his eyes.

“I needed time.””

“For what?””

“To protect you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Victoria spoke through the door.

“Tell her the whole truth.””

Nolan ignored her.

“After Dad died, the company was vulnerable.””

I stared at him.

“Victoria wanted control.””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

“I wanted to keep you safe.””

“How?””

His face broke slightly.

“I gave her temporary access.””

I stepped back.

“You what?””

“It was the only way.””

“You gave her part of Dad’s company?””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“I gave her what she wanted her entire life.””

“What?””

“Time.””

I stared.

He continued.

“I made her believe she had won.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

“I spent seven years building evidence against her.””

He looked toward the door.

“Every transaction. Every contact. Every mistake.””

My anger softened.

Only slightly.

“But you still lied.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because if Victoria knew you were involved, she would stop pretending.””

A pause.

“She would destroy everything.””

Victoria laughed.

“How noble.””

Her voice dripped with sarcasm.

“But your brother forgot one thing.””

Silence.

“He forgot that people eventually get tired of waiting.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Not from the door.

From behind us.

Nolan turned instantly.

Too late.

The office door opened.

A man stood there.

I froze.

Because I knew him.

Not well.

But enough.

He had been in family photographs.

He had attended company events.

He had shaken my father’s hand.

“Nolan.””

His voice was calm.

“You really should have checked the second exit.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who is that?””

Nolan’s face went pale.

“No.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Emily.””

I stared.

“Who are you?””

He stepped into the room.

And answered:

“I’m the reason your father never trusted anyone.””

Nolan moved in front of me.

But the man only smiled.

“Still protecting her?””

A pause.

“That’s exactly why you lost.””

My heart raced.

Because then he said the name.

The name that revealed the final piece of the betrayal.

“My name is Richard Carter.””

I froze.

Carter.

My father’s last name.

Nolan’s last name.

My last name.

The man looked at me.

“I’m your father’s older brother.””

My breath stopped.

“I’m your uncle.””

A horrible silence followed.

Then he looked toward the locked door where Victoria stood outside.

May you like

And smiled.

“Now we can finally finish what your father started.””
