Chapter 8: The Trap Beneath the Wedding Dress

I read the message three times.

My brain kept trying to reject it.

*THE WEDDING IS CANCELLED.*

*THE FUNERAL COMES FIRST.*

The words were written in black ink on the back of a photograph of me smiling in a wedding boutique, completely unaware that someone had been watching me.

Someone had been close enough to capture that moment.

Someone had been close enough to know exactly when I was vulnerable.

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Nolan.””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me.

Because my brother always answered.

Even when he didn’t have the full truth.

Even when the situation was impossible.

But now he was staring at the picture like it was something from a nightmare.

“Who sent this?””

I asked.

Nolan carefully took the photograph from my hand.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

His eyes lifted.

“I’m not.””

“You have that look.””

“What look?””

“The look you get when you recognize danger.””

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he placed the photograph on the desk.

“There are only a few people who knew about your dress fitting.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“Derek.””

“Yes.””

“Clara.””

“Yes.””

“Victoria.””

Nolan nodded.

“But there’s someone else.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

A number appeared.

Unknown.

Again.

My heart raced.

Nolan answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

Silence.

Then a familiar voice.

A voice that made my entire body freeze.

“Emily?””

I grabbed the phone.

“Nolan, give it to me.””

He hesitated.

Then handed it over.

“Dad?””

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

The line went silent.

Then a man laughed softly.

Not happily.

Sadly.

“Your father used to say you had his stubbornness.””

My hand shook.

“Who are you?””

“Thomas.””

The same man from the previous call.

My father’s old business partner.

The witness who had vanished.

“Where are you?””

“Not somewhere safe.””

The answer chilled me.

“What happened?””

“I found out Victoria was moving faster than expected.””

Nolan stepped closer.

“Thomas, tell us what you know.””

A pause.

Then:

“You finally told her.””

The words were directed at Nolan.

My eyes moved to my brother.

“What does he mean?””

Nolan looked away.

Thomas continued.

“You were always too protective of her.””

My voice hardened.

“What are you talking about?””

“Emily, your brother has spent seven years trying to keep you away from the truth.””

I looked at Nolan.

“And now?””

“Now the truth found you anyway.””

A cold silence followed.

“Thomas,” Nolan said sharply.

“Tell us what you know.””

Thomas breathed heavily.

“Victoria has someone inside the company.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why are you calling?””

“Because I know what she’s planning.””

Nolan’s expression changed.

“What?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“The wedding.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What about it?””

“Derek was never supposed to leave with Clara.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then what was he supposed to do?””

Thomas hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified me.

“He was supposed to make sure Emily couldn’t sign the transfer documents.””

“What transfer documents?””

Nolan looked at me.

Thomas answered:

“The ones that would move your father’s shares into Victoria’s control.””

My heart pounded.

“But I don’t have those documents.””

“You do.””

I froze.

“What?””

Thomas continued.

“Your father hid the final authorization inside something you’ve had for years.””

I looked around the office.

“What?””

“A memory.””

The line crackled.

Then Thomas said:

“Something from your wedding.””

My breath caught.

The wedding.

The dress.

The ring.

The invitations.

Nothing made sense.

“What did my father hide?””

Thomas was silent.

Then:

“The answer is not what you’re wearing.””

A pause.

“It’s what you’re carrying.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Two hours later, Nolan and I were back at my apartment.

I hadn’t spoken much.

I couldn’t.

My entire life had become a puzzle where every piece changed shape when I touched it.

Derek wasn’t just cheating.

Clara wasn’t just betraying me.

Victoria wasn’t just controlling.

And my father had spent his final moments preparing for a war I didn’t even know existed.

Nolan stood near the window.

“You should sleep.””

I looked at him.

“How can I sleep?””

He didn’t respond.

“I’m sorry.””

Those words again.

But this time, they felt different.

I looked down.

“I believe you.””

Nolan turned.

The surprise on his face was obvious.

“But I’m still angry.””

He nodded.

“You should be.””

“You decided what I could handle.””

“Yes.””

“You took away my choices.””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“But you also saved my life.””

His eyes softened.

“Every time.””

The answer was so simple that it hurt.

I looked away.

“Do you know what the worst part is?””

“What?””

“I don’t know who to trust anymore.””

Nolan walked closer.

“Trust actions.””

I looked at him.

“Not words.””

That was something Dad used to say.

I remembered.

A phrase from childhood.

People can decorate lies with beautiful words. Watch what they do when nobody is watching.

My father’s voice.

My father’s lesson.

Then I noticed something.

On the table.

The wedding invitation.

I picked it up.

Nolan saw my expression.

“What?””

I turned it over.

“There’s something wrong.””

He stepped closer.

The invitation was elegant.

Cream paper.

Gold lettering.

The design Derek and I had chosen together.

But now I noticed something I had never paid attention to.

A small symbol embossed near the bottom corner.

A tiny mark.

Almost invisible.

“What is that?””

Nolan grabbed a magnifying glass from the desk.

His expression changed.

“It’s a company seal.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“This isn’t a wedding invitation.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He examined it carefully.

“This symbol belonged to Dad’s private legal documents.””

I stared.

“But how?””

Nolan looked at me.

“Who designed the invitations?””

“Clara helped.””

Silence.

Then both of us understood.

Clara.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Clara.

*I know you found the invitation.*

I froze.

Another message appeared.

*I was hoping you would before Victoria did.*

I immediately called her.

She answered after one ring.

“Emily.””

“Tell me the truth.””

“I am.””

“Did you put my father’s seal on my wedding invitations?””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because your father told me to.””

I gripped the phone.

“Seven years ago?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know if you were safe.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Safe? Clara, I almost married the man working with the person who killed my father.””

Her voice broke.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

“I do.””

A pause.

Then she said something unexpected.

“I was the one who convinced Derek to wait.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What?””

“He wanted to move faster.””

“Why?””

“Because Victoria was losing patience.””

I felt cold.

“Losing patience?””

“Yes.””

“About what?””

Clara whispered:

“About making you disappear.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Nolan.

He already understood.

“Emily,” Clara said urgently.

“You need to know something.””

“What?””

“Derek didn’t go to Cabo.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“He never boarded the plane.””

Nolan immediately grabbed his phone.

“What are you talking about?””

Clara continued:

“The luggage was a distraction.””

I felt dizzy.

“The airport kiss…”

“Was staged.””

My heart stopped.

No.

That couldn’t be true.

I had seen it.

I had felt the betrayal.

I had watched them.

“What are you saying?””

Clara’s voice dropped.

“I’m saying Derek wanted you to find them.””

“Why?””

“To make you emotional.””

“Why?””

“Because while you were watching him…”

A pause.

“…someone else was entering your apartment.””

I froze.

My apartment.

The envelope.

The photographs.

The messages.

Someone had been inside.

But why?

Clara continued:

“They weren’t trying to break your heart, Emily.””

My breathing stopped.

“They were trying to distract you.””

Nolan’s face changed.

“From what?””

Clara answered:

“From finding what your father hid.””

A terrible silence filled the room.

Then Nolan slowly looked toward my wedding dress hanging in the closet.

The one I had bought three months earlier.

The one I planned to wear in twelve days.

The one my father’s final warning had somehow predicted.

My phone slipped slightly in my hand.

Because suddenly, I understood Thomas’s words.

It’s not what you’re wearing.

It’s what you’re carrying.

Nolan walked toward the closet.

“Emily.””

His voice was low.

“We need to look at the dress.””

I stared at it.

The dress that represented my future.

The dress that might contain my father’s last secret.

Then my phone received one final message.

Not from Clara.

Not from Nolan.

Not from Thomas.

From Derek.

*I’m sorry, Emily.*

A second message appeared.

*I tried to stop them.*

Then the final one.

*But they already know where your father hid the evidence.*

I looked at Nolan.

“Who is ‘they’?””

Before he could answer, the lights in my apartment went out.

Complete darkness.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A key turning in my front door.

Someone was unlocking my apartment.

Someone who already had access.

And a familiar voice whispered from the other side:

“Emily…”

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to the one person I never thought I would fear.

May you like

“Open the door, sweetheart.””

Aunt Victoria had come home.
