Chapter 7: My Mother’s Choice

I read Vanessa’s words again.

Then again.

*I think your mother is the reason Cole chose you in the first place.*

The sentence should have sounded impossible.

It should have sounded like another cruel twist from someone trying to destroy my family.

But after everything I had learned, impossible had become a dangerous word.

Impossible was what I thought when I saw my husband kissing my mother.

Impossible was what I thought when I learned they had been hiding secrets from me.

Impossible was what I thought when I found out the hospital night wasn’t what I believed.

And every time I said it, the truth became worse.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know everything.””

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“Everyone keeps telling me what they don’t know. I need someone to tell me what they do.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Fair.””

She sat down slowly at my kitchen table.

The same table where I had imagined my daughter eating breakfast someday.

The same table where Cole and I had discussed baby names.

The same table where my mother had sat last week and pretended everything was normal.

“I met Cole at work,” Vanessa began.

I stayed standing.

“He was charming.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

“Because he is.””

That answer surprised me.

“He’s not some obvious villain.””

Her eyes met mine.

“That’s what makes people like him dangerous.””

I looked away.

Because I understood.

The worst people weren’t always the ones who looked cruel.

Sometimes they were the ones who knew exactly how to look safe.

“He knew how to make people feel chosen,” Vanessa continued.

My chest tightened.

“He remembered details. He asked questions. He made you feel like you were the only person in the room.””

I swallowed.

That was Cole.

Exactly.

“When did you realize something was wrong?””

Vanessa looked down.

“After I found out about you.””

“Why?””

“Because of the way he talked about you.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What did he say?””

“That you were perfect.””

The word confused me.

“Perfect?””

“Yes.””

“That sounds like a compliment.””

“It wasn’t.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“It sounded like he was describing a possession.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“He said you were kind. Stable. Loyal. That you wanted a family more than anything.””

My stomach tightened.

“He knew what I wanted.””

“Yes.””

“And that was bad?””

“Not by itself.””

She opened the folder again.

“He also knew what you would tolerate.””

I stared at the papers.

“He studied me?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The silence said enough.

My phone buzzed again.

I looked down.

A voicemail notification.

From my mother.

I ignored it.

Vanessa watched.

“You should hear her.””

“I don’t want to.””

“You might need to.””

I hated that she was right.

I pressed play.

Darla’s voice filled the kitchen.

“Claire, please listen to me. I know you’re angry. I know I don’t deserve forgiveness right now.””

A pause.

Her voice shook.

“But there are things you don’t understand about Cole.””

I looked at Vanessa.

My mother continued.

“I should have told you earlier. I should have protected you. I know that.””

The words almost hurt more.

Because she knew.

She knew exactly what she had failed to do.

“But I need you to understand something. Cole didn’t find me by accident.””

My body went still.

“What?”” I whispered.

Vanessa leaned forward.

Darla continued.

“He knew about me before I knew about him.””

I stopped breathing.

“He knew my struggles. He knew how lonely I was. He knew exactly what to say.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“He made me feel important.””

A pause.

“And I hate myself for admitting this, but at the time, I didn’t question why.””

The message continued.

“Claire, I thought he cared about me.””

My stomach twisted.

“I thought he saw me.””

I almost turned it off.

But I didn’t.

Because I needed to hear the rest.

“Then I realized something.””

Darla’s voice broke.

“He wasn’t looking for me.””

Silence.

“He was looking for a way closer to you.””

The room went cold.

My hand covered my mouth.

Vanessa looked away.

Like she had expected this.

Like she had already known.

Darla continued.

“Claire, I am so sorry.””

A shaky breath.

“I know that doesn’t fix anything.””

“No,” I whispered.

It didn’t.

“But I need you to know the truth.””

Another pause.

“The first time Cole kissed me wasn’t because he loved me.””

I froze.

“It was because he wanted to see if I would betray you.””

The voicemail ended.

I didn’t move.

I couldn’t.

Because somehow that hurt more than the affair.

An affair meant selfishness.

This meant strategy.

This meant I wasn’t just hurt.

I was targeted.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Vanessa answered quietly.

“Because you were the center of everything he wanted.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“He wanted your life.””

I frowned.

“My life?””

“Your family. Your reputation. Your future.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if someone sees people as things to collect.””

I hated how much sense it made.

I thought about Cole’s obsession with appearances.

The perfect house.

The perfect marriage.

The perfect baby announcement.

Everything had always been carefully arranged.

Like a photograph.

I looked at the folder.

“Who else knows?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

“On whether the person telling you the truth is actually trying to help you.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“There is someone else.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“My father has been gone for years.””

“I know.””

“He doesn’t even live here.””

“No.””

“Then how would he know?””

Vanessa looked at the door.

“Because he was the one who hired me.””

The world seemed to stop.

“What?””

“He contacted me after he found out about Cole.””

I stared.

“My father knew about this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

And I knew.

I knew before she said anything.

“Because he tried.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What happened?””

“He contacted you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“He did.””

“When?””

Vanessa opened another document.

“The week before your hospital visit.””

I stared at the date.

The memory hit me.

That week.

I had received several missed calls from an unknown number.

I thought it was a sales call.

I ignored it.

My father had always been complicated.

After my parents divorced, he moved away.

We spoke sometimes.

Not often.

But enough.

“Why didn’t he just tell me?””

“He tried.””

“Then why didn’t I get anything?””

Vanessa looked at the papers.

“Because someone intercepted the messages.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“I think you already know.””

I didn’t want to say it.

But I did.

“Darla?””

Vanessa nodded.

My knees weakened.

“My mother blocked my father from warning me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because by then, your mother believed she had something to lose.””

I looked at the baby decorations.

At the empty room.

At the life I had built.

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“Your mother wasn’t just afraid of losing you.””

A pause.

“She was afraid of losing Cole.””

The pain that followed was strange.

Not sharp.

Not explosive.

Just empty.

Because there was a difference between finding out someone hurt you and realizing they chose someone else over you.

My own mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who held my daughter before she was born.

She had chosen him.

My phone buzzed.

This time, it was not a message.

It was a call.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

My heart stopped.

“Claire?””

I knew that voice.

Even after all these years.

“Dad?””

Silence.

Then:

“I’m sorry I waited this long.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where have you been?””

“I’ve been trying to get to you.””

My throat tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Claire, your mother didn’t just hide Cole’s secrets.””

The line crackled.

“She helped him create them.””

I stood frozen.

“Dad…”

His voice became urgent.

“You need to leave that house.””

“Why?””

“Because if Cole realizes Vanessa showed you those files…”

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

My blood went cold.

I turned toward the window.

A familiar car sat in the driveway.

Cole’s car.

My father’s voice became a whisper.

“Claire, listen to me.””

The front door handle moved.

“Do not let him inside.””

The lock clicked.

And then Cole’s voice came from the other side of the door.

“Claire?””

I stopped breathing.

“I know you’re home.””

My father whispered one final sentence through the phone.

“Whatever you do…”

May you like

The door began to open.

“Do not let him convince you that you were ever the person he loved.””
