Chapter 6: The Betrayal I Never Expected

The name on the screen stayed there for almost a minute.

I thought I had prepared myself for anything.

I thought I understood how far my family would go to protect Ashley.

I was wrong.

Because the person who had helped her was the last person I expected.

My father.

I stared at the message until the letters blurred.

*Your father helped Ashley get access to your old documents. He told her you would approve anything she needed.*

My hands went cold.

I called the number immediately.

A man answered after the second ring.

“Hello?””

“Who is this?””

“Daniel. I was one of Ashley’s investors.””

I gripped the phone.

“Tell me everything.””

There was a pause.

Then Daniel sighed.

“I thought you knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That your father was involved.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

I walked to the kitchen and sat down.

“Start from the beginning.””

Daniel explained that six months earlier, Ashley had approached him about opening a luxury wellness studio.

“She showed me business plans,” he said.

“She showed me financial statements.””

“Were they real?””

“No.””

I closed my eyes.

“She had documents with your name.””

“What kind of documents?””

“Guarantees. Financial approvals. Statements saying you would cover losses if the business failed.””

My voice dropped.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know that now.””

“How?””

“Because I met you.””

I frowned.

“When?””

“At your parents’ house.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“Your father invited me there. He introduced you as the person who would support Ashley financially.””

My chest tightened.

“When did that happen?””

“Two months before the coffee incident.””

I remembered.

A family dinner.

Dad had asked me to stop by because “Ashley needed encouragement.””

I remembered Ashley showing me a presentation on her laptop.

I remembered saying, “It looks impressive.””

I remembered leaving early because I had work.

I had thought it was just another family conversation.

I hadn’t known my father was using my presence as approval.

“Did I sign anything that night?””

“No.””

“Did I agree to anything?””

“No.””

“Then why did you invest?””

Daniel sounded ashamed.

“Because your father told me you were the financial safety net.””

I stood up.

The kitchen suddenly felt too small.

“My own father used my reputation.””

“I’m sorry.””

I thanked him and ended the call.

Then I sat there.

Not crying.

Not angry.

Just empty.

Because Ashley’s betrayal was expected.

Dad’s wasn’t.

Ashley had always been reckless.

Dad had always been the person who told me to be responsible.

The person who taught me honesty mattered.

The person who looked me in the eyes and said family came first.

And he had used me as collateral.

The next morning, I went to my parents’ house.

Dad opened the door.

The second he saw my face, he knew.

“Claire.””

I held up my phone.

“Why?””

He looked away.

That was the answer.

“Why did you use my name?””

His shoulders dropped.

“I didn’t think it would become this.””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s your excuse?””

“I was trying to help your sister.””

“No. You were trying to protect her from consequences.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice rose.

“You have always had opportunities. Ashley struggled.””

I stared at him.

“So you sacrificed me?””

“No.””

“You did.””

“She needed support.””

“I needed a father.””

The room went silent.

Mom appeared in the hallway.

“What’s happening?””

I looked at her.

“Ask your husband.””

Dad shook his head.

“Claire, listen—”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more explanations. No more excuses.””

Mom stepped closer.

“Your father made a mistake.””

I looked at her.

“A mistake?””

The same word.

The same excuse.

“She burned me.””

“She lied.””

“She stole.””

“And now Dad helped her.””

Mom’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

Because maybe she finally understood.

Maybe she realized this wasn’t another argument she could smooth over.

Dad lowered his voice.

“Can we fix this privately?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“Claire.””

“You taught me something when I was a kid.””

“What?””

“That actions have consequences.””

I turned toward the door.

“And now everyone gets to learn that lesson.””

That afternoon, my attorney contacted me.

Yes.

Attorney.

Because after everything, I finally stopped trying to handle everything alone.

She reviewed the documents and found something even worse.

The forged paperwork wasn’t created recently.

It had started years earlier.

The first fake signature.

The first unauthorized financial agreement.

The first time my name had been used.

Was dated seven years ago.

The exact year I started paying my family’s bills.

And attached to the file was one final document.

A handwritten note.

Six words.

But those six words changed everything.

*Claire will always take care of us.*

The handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

Because it wasn’t Ashley’s.

May you like

It wasn’t my father’s.

It belonged to my mother.
