Chapter 8: The Person Behind The Plan

I read the message over and over.

Someone helped Vanessa.

At first, I assumed it was one of her friends.

Someone who encouraged her.

Someone careless.

But then my attorney sent another message.

*The documents contain information only someone close to your parents would know.*

My hands went cold.

Close to my parents.

Family.

I called him immediately.

“Who?””

“We’re still confirming.””

“Can you tell me anything?””

“There are communications between Vanessa and another person.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Millie, you need to prepare yourself.””

My heart sank.

“Who is it?””

Before he answered, another call came through.

Mom.

I almost ignored it.

But I answered.

“Millie.””

Her voice sounded different.

Broken.

“What happened?””

“It’s your father.””

I stood.

“What about him?””

“He collapsed.””

My anger disappeared instantly.

“What?””

“He was talking to the doctor. Then he just…”

She started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I grabbed my jacket.

“Where are you?””

The ship’s medical center was small but modern.

Dad was sitting on the bed when I arrived.

He looked embarrassed.

Not scared.

Embarrassed.

“Millie.””

I walked over.

“Are you okay?””

He nodded.

“I’m fine.””

“You collapsed.””

“I’m fine.””

I sat down beside him.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“I should have told you everything.””

“Yes.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would leave.””

I looked at him.

“You were afraid I would leave?””

He looked down.

“Because I knew how much I had disappointed you.””

That hurt.

Because it meant he knew.

He knew exactly what was happening.

He just hoped I wouldn’t notice.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Why didn’t you stop her?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I failed both of you.””

“What does that mean?””

He sighed.

“Vanessa came to me months ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?””

“She said you controlled everyone.””

I almost laughed.

“And you believed her?””

“I was tired.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Tired of what?””

“Feeling like I couldn’t provide.””

I softened.

Because that was the first time he admitted his pride had been hurt.

“She told me she could help.””

“How?””

“She said she could organize our finances.””

“And the documents?””

He looked away.

“She asked me to sign something.””

My heart dropped.

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because something felt wrong.””

I exhaled.

“Then who helped her?””

Dad was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Dad.””

He whispered:

“Your mother.””

I froze.

The room felt silent.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

“Millie—”

“My mother helped Vanessa?””

He nodded.

“She didn’t think it would go this far.””

I stood up.

“No.””

The pain was different this time.

Vanessa was my sister.

I could understand jealousy.

I could understand insecurity.

But Mom?

Mom knew everything I had sacrificed.

Mom knew every night I worked late.

Every bill I paid.

Every dream I postponed.

And she still helped someone take from me.

I walked out.

I didn’t know where I was going.

I just needed air.

I found Mom near the ship’s garden.

She saw my face.

And immediately knew.

“You know.””

I stopped.

“You don’t even deny it.””

She started crying.

“Millie, please.””

“Why?””

“I wanted to help Vanessa.””

“You helped her steal from me.””

“She was hurting.””

“So was I.””

That made her silent.

I stepped closer.

“You watched me spend years holding this family together.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You know what I did. You never knew what it cost me.””

She cried harder.

“I thought you were strong.””

I shook my head.

“That was the problem.””

“What?””

“You thought because I was strong, I didn’t need protecting.””

The sentence broke something in her.

She covered her face.

“I’m sorry.””

I believed she meant it.

But some damage couldn’t be repaired with one apology.

That night, I packed my suitcase.

Not because I was leaving the cruise.

Because I needed distance.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

No anger.

No accusation.

Just three words.

*I found out.*

Then another message arrived.

*Mom lied to me too.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

A third message appeared.

*Millie, we need to talk before it’s too late.*
