Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Name

I didn't cry.

Not when I saw Elise's name.

Not when Bennett stepped away from his mother like he no longer recognized her.

Not when Rachel quietly explained that she had spent years gathering evidence because she couldn't forget what happened.

I had cried enough before.

Alone.

In rooms where nobody could see.

Not anymore.

Rachel sat across from us.

"My father worked with your grandfather," she said.

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you come forward earlier?""

She lowered her eyes.

"Because I was afraid.""

That answer surprised me.

Not because I didn't understand fear.

Because I understood exactly what kind of people created it.

Elise had built an empire where everyone around her learned one rule.

Don't challenge Kensingtons.

Rachel opened a folder.

"After your grandfather died, your family was paid a settlement.""

My father frowned.

"A settlement?""

Rachel nodded.

"But not by choice.""

She looked at Elise.

"Your grandfather signed it after being threatened with legal action.""

Bennett stared.

"Threatened?""

Elise finally spoke.

"You don't understand business.""

I laughed softly.

"No. I understand cruelty.""

Her eyes sharpened.

"You have always been dramatic.""

"And you have always confused cruelty with sophistication.""

The room went silent.

Bennett looked at me.

"I need to ask you something.""

I waited.

"Did you ever love me?""

The question broke something inside me.

Because despite everything, the answer was still yes.

"I did.""

He looked down.

"Do you?""

I didn't answer.

Because love wasn't always enough.

Sometimes love was a beautiful house built on a weak foundation.

And eventually, someone had to admit it was falling.

Before I could speak, Rachel placed another document on the table.

"There is something else.""

Everyone looked at her.

She turned to me.

"Your grandfather didn't just create the original technology.""

I frowned.

"What do you mean?""

"He created the first version.""

She opened the document.

"And he created the improved version years later.""

I stared.

"What?""

Rachel nodded.

"The technology your grandfather sold wasn't the final invention.""

My heart started racing.

"Where is it?""

Rachel looked at Elise.

"I was hoping she would tell you.""

Every person in the room turned.

Elise said nothing.

Bennett's voice became quiet.

"Mom.""

Still nothing.

My father stepped forward.

"Elise.""

Finally, she spoke.

"You don't know what you are asking for.""

I smiled.

"Actually, I do.""

She looked at me.

"You think this is revenge.""

"No.""

I picked up the documents.

"This is justice.""

Her phone rang again.

This time she didn't answer.

Bennett looked at it.

"Who keeps calling?""

Elise stared at the screen.

Then she said something that made my stomach drop.

"My lawyer.""

Nobody moved.

"Why would your lawyer be calling during a wedding?""

She looked at me.

"Because someone filed a claim this morning.""

My fingers tightened around the papers.

"Against who?""

She didn't answer.

Bennett looked terrified.

"Mom.""

Elise finally whispered:

"Against the company.""

Rachel looked at me.

"Not the company.""

She corrected her.

"Against the entire Kensington estate.""

A cold silence filled the room.

Because everyone understood.

This wasn't just about an old patent.

This was about billions.

And someone had decided today was the day the truth came out.

Then the door opened again.

A man in a dark suit stepped inside.

He looked at Elise.

"We need to talk.""

She stood.

"Not here.""

The man shook his head.

"Actually, Mrs. Kensington...""

May you like

He looked at me.

"It's because of her.""
