Chapter 7: The Secret Vanessa Buried

The room felt colder after Marcus walked in.

Not because the temperature changed.

Because everyone sensed something was wrong.

Vanessa stood frozen near the stage.

For the first time since I had known her, she didn’t look powerful.

She looked afraid.

“Who is he?”” my father asked.

Grandma didn’t answer.

She was watching Vanessa.

And Vanessa was watching Marcus like he was a ghost.

The host cleared his throat.

“Mr. Hayes has provided documentation regarding several financial concerns.””

Vanessa quickly stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Marcus didn’t react.

“You said the same thing five years ago.””

A murmur spread through the room.

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Do not do this here.””

Marcus looked around.

“Why? Because everyone is watching?””

That sentence hit her.

Because that was exactly what she wanted.

People watching.

People admiring.

People believing her version.

Marcus opened the folder.

“I didn’t come here to embarrass you.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“That’s exactly what you’re doing.””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“I came because someone else was about to be hurt.””

My father stepped forward.

“What does this have to do with my family?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Everything.””

My chest tightened.

Grandma remained silent.

She already knew.

That scared me.

“You knew he was coming,” I whispered.

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because Vanessa needed to believe she had won.””

I didn’t understand.

But then Marcus began speaking.

“Five years ago, Vanessa worked with my company.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“That’s ancient history.””

Marcus continued.

“She managed several charitable accounts.””

The room became silent.

“And money disappeared.””

Vanessa’s face turned red.

“That was never proven.””

“No.””

Marcus opened another document.

“Because you resigned before the investigation finished.””

People started whispering.

Vanessa looked around.

“You’re all going to believe him?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was listening.

Marcus looked at my father.

“She changed her name after leaving.””

My father frowned.

“What?””

“She used her middle name professionally. She wanted distance from the situation.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is a lie.””

Grandma finally spoke.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at Vanessa.

“This is the part where you usually attack the person telling the truth.””

Vanessa glared.

“You planned this.””

Grandma shook her head.

“No, Vanessa.””

She pointed at the documents.

“You did.””

The fundraiser ended early.

People left quietly.

The same people who had admired Vanessa hours earlier now avoided eye contact.

I watched her confidence collapse.

But strangely…

I didn’t feel happy.

I felt tired.

Because I had spent years wanting someone to expose her.

And now that it happened, all I felt was sadness.

Not for Vanessa.

For the family we could have been.

Outside the building, Vanessa followed us.

“Daniel.””

My father stopped.

She looked desperate.

“You can’t believe this.””

He looked at her.

“Can I?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because she knew.

The answer was already there.

“You never trusted me.””

Dad shook his head.

“I trusted you too much.””

That hurt her.

More than anger.

More than shouting.

Because disappointment was harder to fight.

Vanessa looked at me.

“This is what you wanted, isn’t it?””

I stared at her.

“No.””

She laughed.

“Don’t lie.””

“I wanted you to admit you hurt me.””

Her expression changed.

“I wanted you to say sorry.””

A long silence.

Then she whispered:

“You think you’re better than me.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I think I’m done letting you make me feel small.””

For a moment, something almost human appeared on her face.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

She turned away.

“I hope you’re happy.””

Grandma watched her leave.

“She still doesn’t understand.””

“What?””

“She thinks consequences are punishment.””

Grandma picked up her coat.

“They are not.””

That night, I asked Grandma about Marcus.

“How did you find him?””

She looked at me.

“Your mother found him first.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

Grandma opened a drawer.

Inside was another letter.

Another piece of the past.

“She suspected Vanessa years ago.””

I stared.

“Then why didn’t she tell everyone?””

Grandma touched the envelope.

“Because your mother believed people deserved a chance to change.””

“And Vanessa?””

Grandma looked sad.

“She used that chance to hurt more people.””

I opened the letter.

But before I could read it, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Lily?””

I froze.

“Yes?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“I knew your mother.””

My heart stopped.

“How?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“Because I was there the night Vanessa tried to take everything from her.””

I looked at Grandma.

Her expression changed.

For the first time…

she looked surprised.

And the woman continued:

“Your grandmother never told you the whole story.””
