Chapter 9: The Truth Buried Beneath the Wedding

I didn’t speak.

I couldn’t.

Because there are moments when the human mind refuses to accept information immediately.

It creates distance.

A small space between hearing something and understanding it.

Voss’s words stayed there.

Floating.

Waiting.

*The person who attacked you that night was someone you loved.*

I looked at Adrian.

Then Voss.

Then the photograph on the table.

Daniel Mercer standing in the background of my wedding.

A man I trusted.

A man who knew me.

A man who had been close enough to hurt me.

But Voss hadn’t said Daniel.

He hadn’t named anyone.

He said someone I loved.

And somehow, that was worse.

“Who?”” I asked.

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Voss didn’t answer.

“Who?””

“Emma.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to do this.””

His expression changed.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

“I don’t need protection.””

I pointed toward the documents.

“I need the truth.””

The room stayed silent.

Then Adrian spoke.

“It was me.””

My head turned.

“What?””

His face was pale.

But he didn’t look away.

“It was me.””

“No.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

The word came out sharper.

Because my mind rejected it before my heart could.

“You attacked me?””

“No.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Adrian looked down.

“I was there.””

I stared.

“Of course you were there.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

His hands tightened.

“The person who attacked us that night used me.””

I said nothing.

“They used my access.””

“My family.””

“My wedding.””

“My name.””

A cold realization moved through me.

“Because nobody would suspect it.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Voss.

“And you knew.””

“I knew Adrian was being used.””

“And you let me believe he betrayed me?””

Voss looked away.

“I didn’t know how deep it went.””

That answer was not enough.

Not anymore.

“You made me forget.””

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you saw something.””

“What?””

“A face.””

The room went still.

“What face?””

Voss hesitated.

Then:

“Daniel’s.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The impossible answer.

The answer that somehow fit every piece.

“You said someone I loved.””

Voss nodded.

“You cared about Daniel.””

I remembered.

The conversations.

The trust.

The respect.

Not romantic love.

Something different.

The kind of bond built by shared danger.

The kind where you trusted someone with your life.

That kind of love could be just as powerful.

And just as destructive.

“What happened after the attack?””

Voss opened another file.

Inside were medical records.

My name.

My information.

A date.

The night after my wedding.

“You suffered trauma.””

“I don’t remember.””

“No.””

“Because you erased it.””

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“Because your mind protected you.””

I stared.

“What?””

“You were exposed to something traumatic.””

He placed the file down.

“I helped guide your recovery.””

“And removed the memory.””

“I removed the details that could compromise the investigation.””

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“So everyone decided what I was allowed to know.””

Nobody answered.

Because that was exactly what happened.

My husband.

My commander.

My friend.

Everyone thought they knew what was best for me.

And everyone forgot one thing.

I was the person living inside my own life.

The evidence changed everything.

Not because it cleared everyone.

Because it complicated everyone.

Adrian wasn’t innocent.

Not completely.

He had lied.

He had hidden information.

He had allowed me to live beside secrets.

But he wasn’t the architect.

He was another piece on the board.

A piece that had realized too late he was being played.

Voss wasn’t innocent either.

He had protected me.

But he had also controlled my reality.

And Daniel.

Daniel was the hardest.

Because hatred required distance.

And I had none.

I remembered him laughing.

I remembered him challenging me.

I remembered him telling me I was too willing to carry everyone else’s problems.

Maybe he had known himself better than anyone.

Maybe he knew exactly how to become someone I would never suspect.

My phone buzzed.

Daniel.

Again.

This time, only one message.

*You finally remember.*

I stared at it.

Then typed:

*Why?*

The response came.

*Because you deserve the truth.*

I almost threw the phone.

*You don’t get to say that.*

A pause.

Then:

*No. I don’t.*

That surprised me.

I expected excuses.

Denial.

Manipulation.

Instead:

*I made choices I believed were necessary.*

I typed:

*You tried to destroy my life.*

The reply:

*I tried to prevent something worse.*

I looked at Voss.

He was watching me.

“You’re talking to him.””

I nodded.

“Put him on speaker.””

I hesitated.

Then did.

“Daniel.””

His voice filled the room.

“Emma.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You ruined everything.””

Silence.

Then Daniel answered.

“I know.””

The simplicity of it shocked everyone.

Adrian’s anger rose.

“You knew what would happen.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she would lose everything.””

“Yes.””

“And you still did it.””

“Yes.””

I stared at the phone.

“Why?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because five years ago, I found evidence of a planned attack.””

“On me?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

A pause.

“Everyone.””

The word was strange.

Too broad.

“Explain.””

“There was an operation being built inside your organization.””

Voss frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“That’s exactly what they wanted you to think.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

“I never found the person at the top.””

“Then what did you find?””

“Enough to know they were using people close to you.””

I looked at Adrian.

Daniel continued.

“Your husband was selected because of his family connections.””

“He wasn’t involved.””

“No.””

Daniel paused.

“He was chosen because he was easy to control.””

Adrian looked away.

I saw the pain.

Because even now, that truth hurt.

“Then why did you attack him?””

“I didn’t.””

The answer was immediate.

I frowned.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“I expect you to look at the evidence.””

Another file appeared on my laptop.

Sent remotely.

I opened it.

Video footage.

Security camera.

The night of my wedding.

My hands went cold.

Because there it was.

The moment everyone had been talking about.

The moment I forgot.

The moment after the ceremony.

The moment a car stopped outside the hotel.

The moment Adrian was dragged away.

The moment I followed.

The footage showed me walking into a private area.

Then Daniel appeared.

Talking to me.

Not attacking me.

Warning me.

I leaned closer.

Then I saw it.

A second person.

Behind him.

Someone else.

Someone whose face was hidden.

Daniel spoke.

“I was trying to get you out.””

“Then why did I forget?””

A long pause.

“Because you saw who was really behind it.””

The video froze.

The hidden figure.

A partial view.

A watch.

A hand.

A familiar ring.

My breathing stopped.

Because I recognized it.

Not Daniel’s.

Not Adrian’s.

Someone else’s.

Someone I had never considered.

Someone who had been close enough to every part of my life.

I whispered the name.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

Voss stepped forward.

“Emma?””

I looked at the screen.

At the ring.

At the symbol engraved into the metal.

A symbol I had seen before.

On documents.

On files.

On classified reports.

A symbol connected to the person who had built this entire operation.

My phone buzzed.

A final message from Daniel.

*Now you know why I couldn’t tell you.*

Another message followed.

*Because the person who betrayed you is the one person you would have defended.*

I looked up.

My voice barely worked.

“Vivian.””

Nobody moved.

Adrian stared.

“My mother?””

I nodded slowly.

“No.””

I looked at the evidence.

“The person behind this isn’t Vivian.””

I swallowed.

“Vivian was just another victim.””

The room went silent.

“Then who?”” Adrian asked.

I looked at the screen.

At the ring.

At the symbol.

At the truth hiding in plain sight.

And then I said the name.

The name that made Voss go completely still.

The name that explained everything.

“Your father.””

Adrian’s face drained of color.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“You said your father died.””

“Yes.””

I turned the screen toward him.

“But someone who died doesn’t leave fingerprints on a five-year operation.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian whispered:

“My father has been dead for six years.””

I nodded.

“And that’s exactly why he was able to do it.””

My phone buzzed one final time.

A message.

From an unknown number.

*Congratulations, Emma.*

*You finally found the man who started it.*

May you like

Then another line appeared.

*Now find out why he chose you.*
