Chapter 8: The Enemy Who Knew My Name
The words stared back at me.
*I chose you.*
Three simple words.
Three words that somehow felt heavier than every secret I had uncovered.
Because choosing someone could mean many things.
Love.
Respect.
Protection.
Or something much darker.
Control.
I touched the edge of the photograph.
The man in the background smiled slightly.
Not the smile of someone caught in a moment.
The smile of someone who knew exactly where he was.
Exactly why he was there.
Exactly what would happen next.
“Who is he?”” Adrian asked.
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because admitting his name meant admitting something worse.
That I had trusted him.
That I had defended him.
That I had spent years believing I understood him.
“Emma.””
I looked at Voss.
“You know.””
His expression was grim.
“Yes.””
“Then say it.””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Say it.””
Voss looked at the photograph.
“Daniel Mercer.””
The name hit like a physical blow.
I closed my eyes.
Daniel.
My former colleague.
My friend.
The man who had worked beside me during some of the most difficult assignments of my career.
The man who had sat across from me for hours analyzing threats.
The man who once told me:
The easiest person to betray is the one who trusts you completely.
At the time, I thought it was a lesson.
I never realized it was a confession.
“No,” I whispered.
Adrian watched me carefully.
“You know him.””
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
I looked at him.
“Someone I trusted.””
The words felt strange.
Because they were true.
And that made them worse.
Voss opened another file.
“Daniel Mercer was one of the most talented analysts in our division.””
“Was?””
“He disappeared three years ago.””
I frowned.
“That’s not what his record says.””
“No.””
“His record says he transferred.””
“His official record.””
I understood immediately.
Someone had changed it.
Someone had erased the truth.
“What happened?””
Voss looked at the documents.
“He discovered something.””
“What?””
“That certain operations were being manipulated from inside.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“By who?””
“We never confirmed it.””
“Because Daniel covered his tracks.””
“Yes.””
I stood.
“So he spent years investigating corruption.””
Voss didn’t answer.
“That’s what you’re telling me.””
“Yes.””
“And then what?””
“He became part of it.””
Silence.
I hated how familiar this pattern was.
Someone starts fighting a system.
The system fights back.
The person breaks.
Or changes.
Or decides they are the only one who can control the outcome.
“Why me?””
Nobody answered.
That was the question that mattered.
Not Adrian.
Not Vivian.
Not the money.
Me.
Why had Daniel chosen me?
Why had he built this around my life?
My marriage.
My identity.
My trust.
Adrian spoke quietly.
“Because you were the only person he couldn’t manipulate.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He knew you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Emma.””
“No.””
I looked at Voss.
“Daniel knew my work.””
“Yes.””
“He knew my habits.””
“Yes.””
“He knew my security protocols.””
“Yes.””
“But he didn’t know me.””
The room became quiet.
Because even I wasn’t sure if I believed that.
The next three hours were spent rebuilding my own life.
Not my marriage.
Not my career.
My life.
Every conversation.
Every interaction.
Every moment Daniel had been present.
And the worst part was how normal it all looked.
That was what made him dangerous.
He wasn’t a stranger who appeared suddenly.
He was someone who had been invited in.
I remembered the first time I met him.
A conference room.
Eight years earlier.
He was younger.
Quiet.
Observant.
Everyone else wanted to prove they were the smartest person in the room.
Daniel wanted to know why the room existed.
That was why I respected him.
He asked better questions.
He saw connections other people missed.
He saved lives because he noticed things others ignored.
Including me.
Once.
I remembered a mission where I nearly walked into a trap.
Daniel had caught the pattern.
He had called me fifteen minutes before I entered the location.
“You’re going to hate this,” he had said.
“What?””
“I think you’re wrong.””
I had laughed.
“About what?””
“Your instincts.””
I remembered being offended.
Nobody questioned my instincts.
Then he explained.
And he was right.
That moment had changed everything.
I trusted him after that.
Maybe too much.
“Emma.””
I looked up.
Adrian was watching me.
“What?””
“You’re blaming yourself.””
I frowned.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I almost argued.
Then stopped.
Because he was right.
Annoyingly right.
“You think you should have seen it.””
I said nothing.
“You think because you’re trained to identify threats, you should never be surprised.””
I looked away.
“Maybe.””
Adrian leaned forward.
“That’s not how it works.””
I stared at him.
“Since when are you an expert?””
A small, sad smile appeared.
“Since I spent five years married to someone who thought she had to carry everything alone.””
That hurt.
Because it was true.
But truth didn’t erase damage.
“I’m still angry with you.””
“I know.””
“I don’t trust you.””
“I know.””
“Then stop acting like you can fix this.””
“I’m not trying to fix it.””
His voice was quiet.
“I’m trying to survive it.””
For the first time, I believed him.
Not completely.
But enough.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
Everyone froze.
*You found my name.*
A second message arrived.
*I wondered how long it would take.*
My fingers tightened.
I typed.
*Why?*
The response came instantly.
*Because I wanted you to find me.*
I looked at Voss.
“He’s watching.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Unknown.””
Another message.
*You always looked for enemies outside the room.*
I stared.
Another message.
*I taught you better than that.*
My chest tightened.
Because I remembered.
Daniel had said that.
Years ago.
A training exercise.
A room full of officers.
He had stood in front of everyone and said:
“The biggest mistake people make is searching for threats where they expect them.””
I whispered:
“Inside the room.””
Adrian heard me.
“What?””
I looked at the messages.
“He’s been trying to prove a point.””
“What point?””
“That I was wrong.””
Voss stepped closer.
“Ask him why.””
I typed.
*Why did you choose me?*
The answer took longer this time.
Almost a full minute.
Then:
*Because you were the only person who could stop what was coming.*
I frowned.
*What is coming?*
No response.
Then another message.
*You think this is about your marriage.*
Another.
*It isn’t.*
Another.
*Your marriage was only the door.*
My stomach tightened.
The room felt colder.
I typed:
*Then what is the real target?*
This time, Daniel answered immediately.
*The United States government.*
Nobody spoke.
Voss moved toward the table.
“Emma.””
I ignored him.
I typed:
*And Adrian?*
The response appeared.
*Collateral.*
My eyes moved to Adrian.
He read the message.
His face changed.
Not surprise.
Pain.
Because even after everything…
That word hurt.
Collateral.
Like his life had never mattered.
I looked back at the phone.
*Why did you try to kill him?*
The typing bubble appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Then:
*I didn’t.*
I frowned.
*You said he was supposed to die.*
A long pause.
Then:
*I said someone wanted him dead.*
My heart stopped.
Because that meant someone else had been moving pieces.
Someone above Daniel.
Someone above everyone.
Then Daniel sent one final message.
*You are looking at the wrong person again, Emma.*
I waited.
The next message arrived.
*The person who betrayed you is not the person you think.*
Another.
*Ask Colonel Voss why he erased your memories of the wedding night.*
The room went silent.
Slowly, I turned toward Voss.
He didn’t deny it.
That was the answer.
My voice dropped.
“Voss.””
He looked at me.
“Tell me.””
Silence.
“Tell me what happened that night.””
His face hardened.
“Emma—”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“No more protecting me.””
His eyes lowered.
And for the first time in my life, I saw fear in the man who taught me how to survive.
“I didn’t erase your memories.””
“Then what did you do?””
He looked at Adrian.
Then back at me.
“I made sure you forgot.””
The room stopped.
My voice became a whisper.
“Why?””
Voss opened his mouth.
And the answer he gave destroyed the last piece of certainty I had.
“Because the person who attacked you that night…”
May you like
He paused.
“…was someone you loved.””
