Chapter 6: The Secret Buried With Lily’s Mother
Daniel held the folder like it was something dangerous.
Because maybe it was.
The basement was quiet now.
Too quiet.
The kind of silence that came after something broke.
For years, Daniel had believed he understood his own life.
He believed he knew the story.
His wife, Emily, had died suddenly.
He became a single father.
He struggled.
He fell apart.
Then Vanessa came into his life and helped him rebuild.
That was the story he had told himself.
The story everyone knew.
But now, standing in a basement filled with hidden cameras and evidence of manipulation, Daniel wondered if the biggest lie had happened before Vanessa ever entered his home.
Margaret watched his expression.
“Daniel.””
He didn’t answer.
“Don’t open that alone.””
His fingers tightened around the folder.
“Why?””
“Because every time you thought you knew the truth, you found out you were wrong.””
Daniel looked at the folder.
The words burned into the cover.
*THE TRUTH ABOUT LILY’S MOTHER.*
“I need to know.””
Margaret sighed.
“I know.””
She touched his shoulder.
“But knowing doesn’t mean it won’t hurt.””
Daniel opened the folder.
The first page was a police report.
The date was six years earlier.
The night Emily died.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
A sentence stood out.
*Vehicle collision investigation reopened due to new evidence.*
Daniel frowned.
“Reopened?””
Margaret leaned closer.
“What does that mean?””
He flipped the page.
There were photographs.
The car.
The road.
The damage.
His hands began shaking.
Because the accident scene looked different from what he remembered.
He had only seen the final images.
The ones the police gave him.
The ones everyone said explained everything.
But these photographs showed something else.
A second vehicle.
A black SUV.
Daniel stared.
“There was another car.””
Margaret looked confused.
“What?””
“There was another car involved.””
He turned the page.
A witness statement.
A name.
*Rebecca Hall.*
Daniel stopped.
“The woman who came here.””
Margaret’s eyes widened.
“She knew Emily?””
Daniel read the statement.
Rebecca had reported seeing a black SUV following Emily’s car moments before the crash.
She had seen someone inside.
A woman.
But the statement had been dismissed because there wasn’t enough evidence.
Daniel felt sick.
“Why didn’t I know about this?””
Margaret looked at the papers.
“Because someone made sure you didn’t.””
The room felt smaller.
Daniel kept reading.
Then he found another document.
A legal letter.
From Robert Hale.
His old lawyer.
The same man who had been helping Vanessa.
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
“He knew.””
Margaret looked at him.
“What?””
“Robert knew.””
He held up the paper.
“He handled the investigation afterward.””
The realization came slowly.
Then all at once.
Robert wasn’t just helping Vanessa.
He had been there from the beginning.
Daniel sat down.
“No.””
Margaret watched him carefully.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Robert was my friend.””
“He was your lawyer.””
“He helped me.””
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“Maybe he helped you believe what he wanted you to believe.””
Daniel looked back at the folder.
A photograph slipped out.
It landed face down.
He picked it up.
And froze.
It was Emily.
Standing outside a building.
With Vanessa.
Daniel stared.
His brain refused to process it.
“What?””
Margaret took the photograph.
Her face changed.
“Why was Emily with Vanessa?””
Daniel turned the picture over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
And a message.
*The three women who knew the truth.*
Daniel felt a chill.
Three women.
Emily.
Vanessa.
Rebecca.
“What does this mean?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
Because she didn’t know.
Then Daniel found another document.
A handwritten note.
Emily’s handwriting.
He knew it instantly.
His wife used to write grocery lists in the same careful letters.
His hands shook as he unfolded it.
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, something happened before I could tell you myself.*
He stopped breathing.
Margaret became still.
Daniel continued.
*Please listen carefully. Vanessa is not who she says she is.*
The room went silent.
Daniel looked up.
“Vanessa knew Emily.””
Margaret nodded slowly.
He forced himself.
*I made a mistake trusting her. I thought she wanted to help me. I thought she cared about Lily.*
Daniel’s heart pounded.
*But she was asking questions about our family. About our finances. About your work. About Lily.*
His face changed.
“She was watching us before she met me.””
Margaret’s voice was quiet.
“Yes.””
Daniel continued.
*She told me Daniel was unstable. She told me he would fall apart without help. She said she knew someone who could make things easier.*
Daniel stopped.
“Someone.””
He looked at the lawyer’s name.
Robert.
The pieces began connecting.
Emily had discovered something.
She had tried to warn him.
But she died before she could.
Or at least, that was what everyone believed.
The next page was missing.
Daniel searched the folder.
Nothing.
“The rest is gone.””
Margaret looked around the basement.
“Maybe Vanessa has it.””
Daniel stood.
“We need to find her.””
Margaret grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
He pulled away.
“For years, I buried Emily’s death because I thought I had to move on.””
His eyes filled.
“But if someone hurt her…”
His voice broke.
“I owe it to Lily to know.””
At that moment, his phone rang.
Detective Harris.
Daniel answered immediately.
“Detective.””
“Mr. Carter, where are you?””
“At home.””
“You need to come to the station.””
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then Harris said:
“We found Vanessa.””
Daniel froze.
“Where?””
“She turned herself in.””
Margaret looked shocked.
“She surrendered?””
Daniel felt uneasy.
That wasn’t what someone running away did.
“Why?””
Detective Harris hesitated.
“She requested to speak with you.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I don’t want to see her.””
“I understand.””
“Then why call?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Because she brought evidence.””
Daniel said nothing.
“She claims Robert Hale has been lying to both of you.””
The name hit him.
Again.
“What evidence?””
Detective Harris lowered her voice.
“A recording.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“Of what?””
The detective answered:
“Of the night Emily died.””
The world seemed to stop.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Daniel couldn’t speak.
After six years of questions…
After six years of grief…
After six years of believing he knew how he lost his wife…
There was finally a recording.
A recording that could reveal the truth.
But as Daniel looked at the folder in his hands, he noticed something.
A small note had been hidden beneath the final page.
A sentence written by Emily.
A sentence he had never seen before.
*Daniel, if Vanessa comes back into your life, do not trust her.*
His heart dropped.
Because Vanessa had come back.
And she wasn’t the only one hiding secrets.
May you like
At the bottom of the note was one final line.
*But if she tells you Robert was responsible… listen.*
