Chapter 5: The Person Behind The Shadow

Darkness swallowed the basement.

For one terrifying second, Daniel couldn’t hear anything except his own breathing.

Then Margaret whispered:

“Daniel…”

“I’m here.””

His voice was low.

He reached out blindly and found her hand.

The basement smelled different now.

The cold air.

The dust.

The old wood.

Everything felt threatening.

But what frightened Daniel most wasn’t the darkness.

It was the fact that someone had been watching them.

Someone outside.

Someone who knew.

A few seconds passed.

Then the emergency light above the stairs flickered on.

The weak red glow revealed the basement.

The computer screen was still showing the parked car outside.

But the person inside was gone.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where did they go?””

Margaret looked toward the basement door.

“They locked us in.””

Daniel grabbed the handle.

It didn’t move.

He pulled harder.

Nothing.

The door had been locked from the outside.

A cold realization spread through him.

Whoever was outside hadn’t just been watching.

They had planned this.

Daniel took out his phone.

No signal.

Of course.

The basement walls were thick.

He looked at Margaret.

“We need another way out.””

She nodded.

But before they could move, the computer made a sound.

A notification.

Both of them turned.

A new file had appeared on the screen.

Daniel walked closer.

The file name was simple.

*WATCH THIS.*

His stomach tightened.

“No.””

Margaret looked at him.

“What?””

“She wants us to see it.””

“Daniel—”

“She’s controlling the story.””

He stared at the screen.

“For years, she made me believe what she wanted me to believe.””

His jaw tightened.

“But now she wants me to know.””

Margaret didn’t like it.

Neither did he.

But there was something about the file that pulled him in.

Because deep down, Daniel knew.

This wasn’t over.

He clicked.

The video began.

The image was from another camera.

A bedroom.

Not Lily’s.

A different child’s room.

A little girl sat on the floor holding a stuffed animal.

Daniel watched silently.

Then Vanessa appeared.

The child looked up.

“Mom?””

Daniel froze.

Vanessa’s daughter.

The girl from the documents.

Vanessa knelt beside her.

“I need you to listen to me.””

The child looked scared.

“Am I going somewhere?””

Vanessa smiled.

A smile Daniel recognized.

The same fake kindness she used with Lily.

“You’re going to help Mommy.””

The girl hugged the stuffed animal.

“How?””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“You’re going to tell people what I tell you to say.””

Daniel’s hands tightened.

The video continued.

The girl started crying.

“I don’t want to lie.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You want to stay with me, don’t you?””

The child stopped crying.

Because she understood.

A child always understands when love comes with conditions.

Daniel looked away.

Margaret whispered:

“She did this before.””

The video ended.

Another file appeared.

This one was labeled:

*LILY — PHASE ONE*

Daniel felt sick.

He clicked.

The video showed Vanessa writing in a notebook.

Her voice played over the recording.

“Children are easier to shape when they are young.””

Daniel’s breathing became uneven.

“She’s a monster.””

Margaret looked at him.

“No.””

He turned.

“What?””

Margaret’s voice was steady.

“She’s a person who made choices.””

She looked at the screen.

“Don’t let her make you stop seeing clearly.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

Then the video changed.

A document appeared.

A custody agreement.

Vanessa’s name.

A lawyer’s name.

And another name.

Daniel leaned closer.

“What?””

Margaret looked.

Her face changed.

“What is it?””

Daniel pointed.

“This lawyer.””

The name was familiar.

Too familiar.

Margaret read it.

Then whispered:

“Robert Hale.””

Daniel nodded.

“He handled my divorce.””

Silence.

The realization hit them both.

Vanessa hadn’t randomly entered his life.

She had connections.

She had planned.

She had known exactly where to find him.

The basement door suddenly shook.

Someone was outside.

Margaret grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“Someone’s there.””

A voice came through the door.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Controlled.

“Daniel.””

Daniel froze.

He knew that voice.

No.

It couldn’t be.

The man spoke again.

“Open the door.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Robert?””

Margaret looked at him.

“You know him?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

The person helping Vanessa was the man who had once helped Daniel rebuild his life.

His lawyer.

His friend.

The person he trusted during the hardest year of his life.

Robert Hale.

“What are you doing here?”” Daniel shouted.

A pause.

Then Robert answered.

“You’re making things harder than they need to be.””

Daniel’s anger rose.

“You helped her.””

“I helped you.””

A bitter laugh escaped Daniel.

“You call this helping?””

Robert’s voice remained calm.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“No.””

Daniel stared at the locked door.

“You’re right.””

His voice hardened.

“I understand now.””

Robert sighed.

“Daniel, open the door.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Because you need to know what Vanessa was protecting you from.””

Daniel and Margaret looked at each other.

The sentence didn’t make sense.

“What does that mean?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Instead, something slid underneath the basement door.

A photograph.

Daniel picked it up.

The image showed Lily.

At a playground.

With another person.

Someone Daniel didn’t recognize.

But written on the back were four words.

*Your daughter knows the truth.*

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What truth?””

Robert finally spoke.

And this time, his voice sounded different.

Not calm.

Not confident.

Afraid.

“Daniel…”

A pause.

“Lily is not Vanessa’s only victim.””

The basement fell silent.

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

A terrible thought entered his mind.

“Who is the other victim?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Then the lights suddenly returned.

The basement door unlocked.

Daniel grabbed the handle and pulled it open.

But the hallway outside was empty.

Robert was gone.

Only one thing remained on the floor.

A folder.

Daniel picked it up.

On the front was a name.

Not Lily.

Not Vanessa.

His own.

*DANIEL CARTER — THE TRUTH ABOUT LILY’S MOTHER.*

Daniel stopped breathing.

Because after everything he had discovered…

After every lie Vanessa had told…

There was one question he had never asked.

May you like

Why had Lily’s mother really died?

And why had Vanessa spent years making sure he never found out?
