Chapter 9: The Father Who Never Left
I couldn’t scream.
I couldn’t cry.
I couldn’t even move.
Because the man standing in front of me was impossible.
My father.
The man whose funeral I attended.
The man whose ashes I believed were buried beneath a black marble stone.
The man whose voice I had listened to in old recordings when I missed him.
Standing alive in front of me.
Older.
Tired.
Broken.
But alive.
“Mara.””
His voice was exactly the same.
And somehow that made it worse.
Because my heart recognized him before my mind could accept him.
I stepped back.
“No.””
My father’s expression collapsed.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re not real.””
My mother moved closer.
“Mara…”
I looked at her.
“You knew.””
The words came out colder than I expected.
She looked away.
That was enough.
“You knew he was alive.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“Yes.””
The pain that followed was almost physical.
My entire life had become a room full of people who knew the truth while I lived inside a lie.
My father took a step forward.
I immediately stepped back.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
And I saw something in his eyes.
Pain.
Not anger.
Not disappointment.
Pain.
“I deserve that.””
“Yes.””
The answer came too quickly.
His face tightened.
“You’re right.””
I looked at him.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I had no choice.””
“Everyone says that.””
My voice broke.
“Everyone always has a reason.””
The archive room became silent.
My father looked at Lily.
His expression changed.
A sadness so deep crossed his face that it frightened me.
“That’s her.””
I tightened my arms around her.
“Yes.””
He nodded slowly.
“Your daughter.””
“My daughter.””
The way he said it sounded like he was correcting himself.
Not claiming her.
Accepting her.
That was the first thing that made me hesitate.
“What happened?””
My father looked at Elliot.
Then my mother.
Then me.
“Your grandfather built an empire.””
He spoke quietly.
“But he also built a trap.””
I listened.
Because despite everything, this was the answer I had been searching for.
“The Kingsley family trust was created to protect the company from outsiders.””
He looked at Lily.
“But your grandfather became afraid of losing control.””
“So he changed the rules.””
“Yes.””
My father walked toward the archive table.
“He created a system where only blood relatives could control the future of Kingsley Holdings.””
“And Lily?””
“She became part of that system.””
I shook my head.
“She’s a child.””
“I know.””
His voice became emotional.
“That was why I tried to hide her.””
“From who?””
He looked at Adrian’s name on the files.
“From people who saw her as an opportunity.””
My stomach tightened.
“Adrian.””
“Yes.””
“And Grant.””
My father was silent.
That silence hurt.
“Did you know about Grant?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before you married him.””
I closed my eyes.
Another betrayal.
“You let me marry him anyway.””
“I tried to stop it.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
He looked down.
“Because I believed I could control the situation.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Men always think they can control everything.””
He accepted the criticism.
“You’re right.””
The honesty surprised me.
“My greatest mistake was believing I could protect you without trusting you.””
The words hit harder than an excuse would have.
“Then why fake your death?””
My father looked at the floor.
“Because Adrian found out about Lily.””
My hand moved protectively over her back.
“What did he know?””
“He knew she existed.””
“And?””
“He knew she carried the future of the Kingsley trust.””
My father took a breath.
“But he did not know the truth.””
“What truth?””
He looked at me.
“The identity of Lily’s biological father.””
The room became silent.
My father continued.
“Adrian spent years believing Lily was his.””
“But she wasn’t.””
“No.””
“Then who?””
My father looked at me.
And I already knew.
But I needed him to say it.
“Grant.””
The word landed softly.
But it changed everything.
I stared at him.
“No.””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Elliot.
Then my mother.
Neither corrected him.
“Grant is Lily’s biological father.””
My mind went blank.
“But the test…”
“The test was altered.””
My father’s voice was heavy.
“Adrian changed the records to make himself appear to be the father.””
“Why?””
“Because he needed control.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
My little girl.
The entire war had been fought over a lie.
Grant’s desperation.
Adrian’s obsession.
My family’s secrets.
All built around false information.
“Why didn’t anyone tell Grant?””
My father looked away.
“Because by the time we discovered the truth, it was too late.””
“What does that mean?””
“Grant had already made a deal with Adrian.””
My stomach dropped.
“What deal?””
“To help remove you as guardian.””
The pain returned.
“So he really was trying to take Lily.””
“Yes.””
“But he thought she wasn’t his.””
“Yes.””
I looked down.
A thousand emotions collided.
Anger.
Confusion.
Sadness.
Because suddenly Grant was not the villain I thought he was.
But he was not innocent either.
He had still chosen betrayal.
My father continued.
“Grant believed Adrian was the only person who could give him power inside Kingsley Holdings.””
“And then?””
“Then he learned the truth.””
“When?””
My father looked at me.
“After Lily was born.””
I remembered.
The hospital.
The strange look on Grant’s face.
The moment he held her.
He knew.
Not everything.
But something.
“What happened after?””
“He changed.””
I looked away.
“He still hurt me.””
“Yes.””
“He still cheated.””
“Yes.””
“He still tried to take her.””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
The truth was becoming more complicated.
And somehow that was harder than a simple enemy.
Because simple enemies were easy.
Real people were not.
My father reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small device.
A recorder.
“I left this because I knew I might not survive.””
My heart tightened.
“Survive what?””
He looked at me.
“The final confrontation.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“With Adrian?””
“Yes.””
“And you?””
“I disappeared before he could kill me.””
The room went silent.
“You knew?””
My father nodded.
“Adrian was responsible for the plane crash.””
My mother closed her eyes.
Even though she knew, hearing it again still hurt.
“He wanted control of the company.””
My father placed the recorder on the table.
“But he made one mistake.””
“What?””
“He underestimated you.””
I frowned.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
He smiled sadly.
“You were never supposed to inherit an empire.””
He looked at Lily.
“You were supposed to protect a child.””
A sound came from above us.
A crash.
Everyone froze.
My father’s expression changed.
“He found us.””
Elliot moved toward the door.
“Who?””
My father didn’t answer.
He already knew.
The lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the archive.
Then emergency lights flickered on.
And standing at the top of the stairs was Adrian Vale.
But he wasn’t alone.
Grant stood beside him.
My heart dropped.
“Grant.””
His face was unreadable.
Adrian smiled.
“Family reunions are always emotional.””
My mother moved in front of me.
Adrian looked amused.
“Still protecting her.””
My father stepped forward.
“You should have stayed away.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“You should have stayed dead.””
Grant looked at Lily.
Then at me.
His expression broke.
“Mara…”
I couldn’t read him.
Was he here to help?
Or had he brought them?
Adrian stepped into the archive.
“Do you know what the funny thing is?””
Nobody answered.
He smiled.
“For years, everyone believed the secret was Lily’s father.””
He looked at me.
“But that was never the real secret.””
My grip tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Adrian walked closer.
“The real secret…”
He pointed toward the files.
“Is that Lily was never the only heir.””
The room went silent.
My father’s face changed.
“Adrian.””
Adrian smiled.
“Yes.””
Then he looked directly at me.
“Your father had another child.””
I felt the world stop.
“What?””
Adrian’s smile widened.
“And that child has been waiting for years to take everything from you.””
Behind him, Grant lowered his eyes.
Like he already knew.
And then Adrian said the name.
A name I had never heard before.
May you like
A name that belonged to someone who had been hidden my entire life.
“Meet your sister, Mara.””
