Chapter 7: The Daughter of the Enemy
The photograph slipped from my fingers.
It landed on the cold stone floor of the archive room.
But I didn’t move.
I couldn’t.
Because my mind was refusing to accept what my eyes had already seen.
*Adrian Vale.*
Written on the back of the photograph.
Adrian Vale.
The man who had stood beside my father at every family event.
The man who had spoken at my father’s funeral.
The man who had looked at Lily tonight like she was a possession.
The man who had just revealed himself as the person my father feared most.
My daughter’s father.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like I was trying to convince myself.
My mother looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Mara…”
“No.””
I picked up the photograph again.
My hands were shaking.
“This isn’t possible.””
She didn’t answer.
That was the worst part.
Because if it was a lie, she would have fought.
She would have denied it.
Instead, she looked like someone who had been carrying a weight for years and finally watched it crush someone else.
“Tell me this is fake.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I wish it was.””
The room seemed to shrink.
The walls.
The files.
The archive.
Everything built around a secret that had been waiting for me.
I looked at Lily.
She was asleep in my arms.
Her tiny face peaceful.
Completely unaware that the adults around her had turned her birth into a battlefield.
“How?””
My voice cracked.
“How could he be her father?””
My mother sat down slowly.
“Because I made a mistake.””
I stared at her.
A cold anger rose inside me.
“A mistake?””
She flinched.
“Yes.””
“You mean you had a child with my father’s best friend?””
Her face broke.
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“No?””
She shook her head.
“Adrian was never supposed to be part of our lives.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at the photograph.
“Before I married your father, Adrian and I were close.””
My stomach tightened.
“How close?””
“Close enough that I believed I knew him.””
She swallowed.
“I was wrong.””
The room went silent.
“What happened?””
My mother looked away.
“Adrian was charming. Intelligent. Everyone loved him.””
I almost laughed.
Because that sounded exactly like the man I remembered.
“He helped your grandfather. He helped your father. He became family.””
“Until he wanted more.””
She nodded.
“Until he believed he deserved what your father had.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“But Lily?””
My mother’s voice became softer.
“Lily was born before I knew what Adrian had become.””
A thousand questions rushed through my mind.
“But Grant knew?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before your wedding.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain was immediate.
The image of Grant proposing.
Grant putting a ring on my finger.
Grant promising forever.
All of it suddenly looked different.
“He married me knowing?””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her answer was quiet.
“Because Adrian convinced him.””
I felt sick.
“Convinced him to do what?””
“To believe Lily was the path to power.””
The words felt disgusting.
A child.
A baby.
A little girl.
A path.
A strategy.
A key.
Everything except a person.
My mother reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
Not because I hated her.
Because I didn’t know what I felt.
“I need the whole truth.””
“You deserve it.””
“No more protecting me.””
She nodded.
“No more.””
She opened another folder inside the archive.
Inside were documents.
Medical records.
Legal papers.
Letters.
My eyes moved over the pages.
Then I saw something that made my heart stop.
A paternity test.
I picked it up.
The date was from shortly after Lily’s birth.
The results were clear.
*Adrian Vale — Biological Father.*
Another name appeared below.
*Grant Kingsley — Legal Father.*
I looked at my mother.
“Grant signed this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked devastated.
“Because Adrian promised him control of Kingsley Holdings.””
I stared at the paper.
“So my husband sold his role as Lily’s father.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
She paused.
“Something happened.””
“What?””
“Grant changed.””
I almost laughed.
“Changed?””
“Yes.””
The answer surprised me.
My mother looked at the document.
“At first, he saw Lily as a contract.””
My stomach twisted.
“But?””
“But then he fell in love with her.””
The silence that followed was complicated.
Because I knew that feeling.
I had seen it.
The way Grant held Lily when she was sick.
The way he sang to her at night.
The way he cried when she took her first steps.
Those moments had been real.
Even if everything around them was built on lies.
“But he still tried to take her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
My mother looked at me.
“Because Adrian came back.””
The room went cold.
“When?””
“Months ago.””
Everything connected.
The affair.
The custody papers.
The sudden cruelty.
The public humiliation.
“He told Grant he would expose him.””
“Expose him for what?””
“For raising a daughter who wasn’t biologically his.””
I looked down.
“So Grant became desperate.””
“Yes.””
“And Adrian?””
My mother’s expression darkened.
“He wanted Lily.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“Because Lily’s existence gives him access to the Kingsley bloodline trust.””
I shook my head.
“But why would my father create something like that?””
“Because he knew powerful people would try to steal the company.””
“So he created a protection.””
“Yes.””
“For Lily?””
“For you.””
I looked confused.
My mother took another document.
“This trust was not about money.””
She pointed to the paper.
“It was about leadership.””
I read the words carefully.
The Kingsley family trust.
The next generation.
The rightful heir.
My eyes stopped on one sentence.
*The trust shall remain protected until the child reaches adulthood or until the appointed guardian is confirmed.*
Guardian.
I looked up.
“Guardian?””
My mother nodded.
“Your father named one.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared me.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“Your father named you.””
I froze.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“But I’m her mother.””
“Exactly.””
I looked back at Lily.
The entire plan was never about giving the company to a child.
It was about protecting her until she could choose for herself.
Then why had everyone been fighting?
Because someone wanted control before she was old enough.
Adrian.
Grant.
Maybe others.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
I grabbed it.
Unknown number.
A video file.
My blood ran cold.
I pressed play.
The screen showed a dark room.
A man sitting in a chair.
Older.
Weak.
But alive.
My father.
I stopped breathing.
“Dad?””
The video continued.
His voice filled the archive room.
“If you are watching this, Mara, then the people I feared have already made their move.””
My knees almost gave out.
My mother covered her mouth.
My father continued.
“I need you to understand something. Lily is not Adrian Vale’s victory.””
The video paused briefly.
Then he said:
“She is his greatest mistake.””
My eyes widened.
What did that mean?
My father leaned closer to the camera.
“Adrian believes Lily gives him power over Kingsley Holdings.””
A pause.
“He is wrong.””
The screen flickered.
Then my father said the words that changed everything.
“Because Adrian Vale is not Lily’s only biological parent.””
The room went silent.
I stopped breathing.
My mother looked confused.
Even she didn’t know.
My father continued.
“Mara, the person who gave Lily her blood was not the man you think.””
My heart pounded.
“What?””
The video glitched.
My father’s voice became distorted.
Then the final sentence played.
“The truth is hidden in the second file.””
The screen went black.
I stared at the phone.
Second file.
I turned back toward the archive.
There was only one folder before.
But now, behind the first compartment, I noticed a hidden space.
Inside was another envelope.
Smaller.
Older.
With my father’s handwriting.
My name.
And one sentence.
*Open only when you learn who betrayed you.*
My fingers touched the seal.
Then I heard footsteps above us.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming down the stairs.
My mother’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
“What?””
She looked toward the doorway.
“He found us.””
The footsteps stopped.
A shadow appeared.
Then a familiar voice spoke from the darkness.
“Mara.””
I froze.
Because it wasn’t Adrian.
It wasn’t Grant.
It was someone I never expected.
Someone who had helped me search for answers.
Someone who had claimed to be protecting me.
“Elliot.””
My father’s attorney stepped into the archive.
His expression was full of regret.
“I’m sorry.””
My mother moved in front of me.
“You knew.””
Elliot looked at Lily.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“I knew from the beginning.””
I held my daughter tighter.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Elliot looked at the hidden envelope.
And his face turned pale.
“Because if you open that…”
He stopped.
“What?””
His voice dropped.
“You will find out who Lily’s real father is.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Then Elliot said the words that made my entire world collapse again.
“And it’s not Adrian Vale.””
