The Bride Beneath the Bed / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Person Who Knew Everything

I knew that smile.

That was the worst part.

Not the fear.

Not the confusion.

Not even the realization that someone had been watching me.

The worst part was seeing a familiar face walk through the restaurant doors and realizing my brain was trying to reject what my eyes already understood.

Because some betrayals don’t come from strangers.

They come from people who know exactly where you keep your spare key.

The person stopped near our table.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost amused.

“Emma.””

My throat tightened.

“Uncle Daniel.””

The name left my mouth before I could stop it.

Daniel Carter.

My father’s younger brother.

The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The man who brought me ice cream after school.

The man who sat beside me at my grandmother’s funeral and told me I would always have family.

The man who had spent my entire life telling me:

“Your father and I will always protect you.””

Now he stood in front of me.

And I couldn’t tell if he was there to protect me…

Or finish what everyone else had started.

My father’s voice was still on the phone.

“Emma?””

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

Daniel smiled.

“You look surprised.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

The smile faded slightly.

“Knew what?””

“That I would find out.””

A pause.

Then something changed in his expression.

Not guilt.

Recognition.

Like he realized the game was over.

“Your father always underestimated how much you notice.””

My stomach turned.

“You were the one watching me.””

Daniel pulled out the chair beside us.

He didn’t ask permission.

He sat.

“I was hoping you would find the truth before it was too late.””

I almost laughed.

“Too late?””

I looked at him.

“You have been spying on me.””

“I have been monitoring the situation.””

“That’s a nicer word.””

“It’s also accurate.””

I stared.

The man who used to bring me birthday gifts was speaking like a businessman.

Like I was a file on his desk.

My father’s voice came through the phone again.

“Emma, get away from him.””

Daniel looked at my phone.

Then smiled.

“Your father is always dramatic.””

My blood went cold.

“You knew he was listening?””

“I knew you would call him.””

I felt something shift inside me.

Not fear.

Anger.

“You planned all of this.””

“No.””

He looked at Grayson.

“Not all of it.””

Everyone became silent.

Grayson looked at Daniel.

“You.””

Just one word.

But it carried hatred.

Daniel looked at him.

“Still angry?””

Grayson’s jaw tightened.

“You used me.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“No.””

He leaned back.

“You allowed yourself to be used.””

That sentence hit Grayson harder than I expected.

Because he didn’t argue.

I looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Nobody answered.

“Enough.””

My voice cut through the table.

“I am done being the only person who doesn’t know what’s going on.””

Daniel looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the uncle I remembered.

The one who would have apologized.

The one who would have told me the truth.

Then it disappeared.

“Emma, there are things your father hid from you.””

I looked at him.

“And you’re different?””

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I’m not.””

At least he admitted it.

My phone was still connected.

My father heard everything.

“Daniel,” my father’s voice said.

The table went silent.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Brother.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

Brother.

Not uncle.

Brother.

The word suddenly sounded strange.

My father had spent years talking about Daniel like he was someone he trusted.

Someone who was family.

“Why?”” my father asked.

Daniel looked down.

For the first time, he looked tired.

“Because you never understood what you had.””

My father’s voice hardened.

“I protected my family.””

“No.””

Daniel looked up.

“You protected your secrets.””

The accusation hung there.

I looked at my father’s name glowing on my phone screen.

Secrets.

Everyone had them.

Everyone had decided what I could handle.

Everyone had chosen silence.

And somehow, I was the person paying the price.

“What secrets?”” I asked.

Nobody spoke.

I stood.

“What secrets?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father never told you about the accident.””

My heart stopped.

“What accident?””

My father immediately said:

“Daniel, don’t.””

That reaction was enough.

I turned toward the phone.

“Dad.””

Silence.

“Tell me.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No more.””

The restaurant was quiet around us.

People were watching.

I didn’t care.

“I spent my entire life trusting all of you.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You.””

Then Grayson.

“You.””

Then the phone.

“Even you.””

My eyes burned.

“And every single one of you decided I was too fragile for the truth.””

My father’s voice softened.

“Emma.””

“No.””

I wiped my face.

“I want to know.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then my father finally said:

“Your mother’s death wasn’t an accident.””

The words didn’t make sense.

My mother had died when I was young.

A car accident.

That was the story.

The only story.

I looked at Daniel.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel looked away.

My father continued.

“I never told you because you were a child.””

“I’m not a child now.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

A long silence.

Then:

“Your mother discovered something.””

“What?””

“About the company.””

My breathing slowed.

The company.

Everything kept coming back to that.

“The same technology?”” I asked.

“Yes.””

“What did she discover?””

My father didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“She discovered someone was trying to steal your father’s work.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

“And she tried to expose them.””

My fingers went cold.

“Did Lorna know?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

I looked at Grayson.

He looked broken.

“Did you know?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“I knew my mother was involved.””

The words barely came out.

I stared.

“How long?””

“Before I met you.””

The room spun.

“Before you met me?””

“Yes.””

“So when you approached me…”

“I knew.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew my mother’s death was connected to this?””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

I wanted to hate him.

I did.

But there was something else there.

Something worse.

A question.

“How could you?””

His voice broke.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“By marrying me?””

“I thought if I got close enough, I could find proof.””

“And what happened?””

He looked at me.

“I fell in love with you.””

The words would have destroyed me weeks ago.

Tonight?

They just hurt.

“Don’t.””

“I’m telling the truth.””

“Maybe.””

I shook my head.

“But the truth doesn’t erase what you did.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

Daniel stood.

“We need to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face became serious.

“Because if Lorna knows you’re here with us, you’re no longer useful to her.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Claire finally spoke.

“She means she’ll stop trying to control the situation.””

I looked at her.

“And what happens then?””

Claire’s expression was grim.

“She starts removing problems.””

The words chilled me.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A new message.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, only one sentence.

*Ask Daniel what happened to your mother’s original files.*

I looked up.

Daniel’s face had changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

My father’s voice came through the phone.

“Emma.””

I stared at my uncle.

“What is it?””

My father whispered:

“Daniel wasn’t supposed to still have those files.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What files?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel slowly reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

Worn at the edges.

My name was written on the front.

Not my father’s.

Not Daniel’s.

Mine.

And beneath my name were four words written in my mother’s handwriting.

May you like

Words I had not seen in twenty years.

*For my daughter, Emma.*
