Chapter 5: The Marriage That Was Designed

The date on the paper burned into my mind.

Two weeks before I met Grayson.

Two weeks before he smiled at me across the coffee shop.

Two weeks before he spilled his drink on my notebook and apologized so sincerely that I laughed instead of getting angry.

Two weeks before he became the man I trusted with my heart.

I stared at the photograph.

My own face stared back at me.

I was sitting on a park bench, holding a book, completely unaware that someone had been watching me.

Studying me.

Choosing me.

My hands went cold.

I flipped the photograph over again.

The note was still there.

*Target confirmed. Proceed.*

A target.

That was the word they used.

Not girlfriend.

Not woman.

Not person.

Target.

I felt something inside me break.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just a quiet crack.

The kind that happens when something you believed was solid turns out to be made of glass.

I reached for the folder beneath it.

More documents.

More photographs.

More pieces of a life I had never known existed.

The first page was a printed email.

The sender name was Claire Whitmore.

The subject line made my stomach turn.

*Progress Update: Emma Carter*

I read the first sentence.

Grayson has established contact. Initial impression is positive.

My breathing became shallow.

I kept reading.

She responds well to emotional reassurance. Her previous relationships suggest she values stability and commitment.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

They had researched me.

Not casually.

Not accidentally.

They had built a profile.

A person’s entire life reduced to information.

My childhood.

My habits.

My fears.

My weaknesses.

I turned the page.

There was a list.

Things I liked.

Things I disliked.

My favorite flowers.

My favorite restaurant.

The date my grandmother died.

The name of my childhood best friend.

The charity I volunteered for.

Even the coffee order I always made when I was nervous.

I covered my mouth.

Because suddenly every romantic moment with Grayson felt different.

The first time he brought me my favorite coffee.

The night he showed up with my grandmother’s favorite dessert after I mentioned missing her.

The weekend he planned a trip to the exact town where my father grew up.

I thought he was paying attention because he loved me.

He was paying attention because he was collecting information.

A sound behind me made me freeze.

The door.

I turned.

Nobody.

Only the hallway.

I grabbed the folder and shoved it under my jacket.

Then I heard footsteps.

Coming closer.

My heart stopped.

I looked around the room.

No place to hide.

The footsteps stopped outside.

The handle moved.

I held my breath.

The door opened.

“Emma?””

I almost collapsed.

Not Grayson.

My father.

He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

For a moment, he just looked at me.

Then his eyes moved to the open drawer.

He understood immediately.

“You found it.””

I nodded.

“I found everything.””

My father walked toward me.

Not as a businessman.

Not as the man who had spent decades making impossible decisions.

As my dad.

“What did you see?””

I handed him the folder.

He opened it.

His face changed with every page.

I had seen my father angry before.

I had seen him frustrated.

I had seen him disappointed.

But I had never seen him look afraid.

“Dad?””

He looked up.

“Emma.””

“What?””

His hand tightened around the paper.

“You need to leave.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Leave this hotel.””

“No.””

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice surprised both of us.

“I’m not running.””

“This is bigger than a marriage.””

“I know.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

I pointed at the folder.

“They planned this.””

My father went silent.

“Yes.””

“They chose me.””

“Yes.””

“They studied me.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“Then I’m done being the person everyone makes decisions for.””

His expression softened.

“That’s not what I’m doing.””

“Isn’t it?””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

“I know you love me. I know you’re trying to protect me. But Grayson already spent two years deciding who I was allowed to be.””

My voice shook.

“I’m not letting him do it again.””

My father looked away.

For a moment, he looked tired.

Older.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I thought if I found enough evidence, I could stop this before you got hurt.””

“But I still got hurt.””

“I know.””

The sadness in his voice almost broke me.

Then he pulled another document from the folder.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“This isn’t just about money.””

“What do you mean?””

He handed me the page.

It was a contract.

A partnership agreement.

Between Grayson and Claire’s father’s company.

I scanned the details.

My eyes stopped.

“Why is my name here?””

My father’s expression hardened.

“That’s what I was afraid of.””

The document listed a transfer agreement.

A property acquisition.

And a beneficiary.

Me.

But not in the way I expected.

My name was being used as a legal bridge.

“What is this?””

“I don’t know yet.””

“You said you found financial connections.””

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

My father pointed to the signatures.

“Martin Whitmore’s company was trying to acquire several coastal properties.””

“The apartment?””

“Yes.””

“But why me?””

“Because the company needed someone who looked unrelated.””

I stared.

“Someone innocent.””

“Yes.””

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“Grayson didn’t marry me for the apartment.””

My father looked at me.

“No.””

“He married me for something else.””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

I looked back at the folder.

The photos.

The emails.

The notes.

The years of pretending.

“What was I supposed to do?””

My father didn’t answer.

Because neither of us knew.

Then my phone buzzed.

Both of us looked down.

A message.

From Grayson.

My stomach tightened.

I opened it.

*Emma, I know you found something. We need to talk before your father tells you lies.*

I stared.

My father saw the message.

“He knows.””

“How?””

“He may have access to your accounts.””

My face went pale.

“He knows where I am?””

“Maybe.””

I looked around the room.

Suddenly the walls felt too thin.

Too many cameras.

Too many doors.

Too many people who knew more about my life than I did.

Another message appeared.

*Please. I’m asking you as your husband. Meet me alone.*

I laughed softly.

My father looked at me.

“What?””

“He still calls himself my husband.””

The anger in my chest was different now.

Stronger.

“After everything.””

My father took a breath.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked at the folder.

Then at the message.

Then at the wedding ring.

“I’m going to meet him.””

My father immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“Not because he wants me to.””

“Emma.””

“Because I need him to think he still has control.””

My father studied me.

“You’re planning something.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

I closed the folder.

“I’m going to give him exactly what he expects.””

“What does he expect?””

I looked at my reflection in the dark hotel window.

The bride.

The broken bride.

The woman he thought he understood.

“He expects me to cry.””

My father said nothing.

“He expects me to beg.””

I slipped the ring higher on my finger.

“He expects me to ask why I wasn’t enough.””

My voice became steady.

“But I’m not going to give him that.””

Outside, the city lights moved below us.

People were driving home.

People were laughing.

People were living ordinary lives.

Mine had changed forever.

My father picked up the folder.

“What if he’s dangerous?””

I looked at him.

“Then I’ll find out.””

“Emma.””

“I need answers.””

My father closed his eyes briefly.

Then nodded.

“Fine.””

I was surprised.

“But one condition.””

“What?””

“You don’t meet him alone.””

I opened my mouth to argue.

He raised a hand.

“No negotiation.””

For the first time that night, a small smile appeared between us.

The kind that belonged to my real family.

Not the one I had married into.

“Okay.””

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn’t Grayson.

It was an unknown number.

One message.

No explanation.

Just a photo.

I opened it.

And my blood turned cold.

It was a picture of me leaving the hotel room.

Taken minutes earlier.

Underneath it were six words.

*You should have stayed under the bed.*

I looked at my father.

He had seen it too.

And for the first time, neither of us wondered whether Grayson was hiding something.

We knew.

May you like

Someone else was watching me.

And they were much closer than I thought.
