Chapter 4: The Guest Who Knew Too Much

I stared at the photograph until the screen blurred.

At first, my mind refused to understand what I was seeing.

Because the person standing outside my childhood home wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t some anonymous enemy hiding in the shadows.

It was someone who had smiled at me less than twenty minutes earlier.

Someone who had hugged my mother.

Someone who had congratulated Lucas on his wedding.

Someone who had walked through our front door like family.

My fingers went numb.

“No.””

The word slipped out before I could stop it.

Alex watched my face carefully.

“Emily.””

I looked up at him.

“How did you get this?””

“The security team reviewed the footage from the cameras outside the house.””

I looked back at the phone.

The image showed a woman stepping out of a black SUV.

Her face was clear.

Too clear.

I knew that face.

I had known it for years.

“Rachel.””

The name barely left my mouth.

My mother immediately looked up.

“What did you say?””

I turned the phone around.

The room changed the moment my mother saw the photograph.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

“You know her,” I said.

My mother didn’t answer.

That silence told me everything.

Alex noticed too.

“Victoria.””

My mother looked away.

“Don’t start.””

“Start what?””

She folded her arms.

“This is a family matter.””

Alex’s expression hardened.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

But everyone heard the warning underneath.

“This became my matter when someone targeted my wife.””

The word wife still seemed to bother my mother.

Like it was a title she couldn’t accept.

I looked at her.

“Who is Rachel?””

My mother sighed.

“She’s nobody.””

I almost laughed.

Nobody?

A person who appeared at my house before my husband arrived.

A person who knew enough about me to arrange something cruel.

Nobody?

“No,” I said.

My voice was steady.

“Don’t do that.””

My mother looked at me.

“Do what?””

“Pretend.””

The room became quiet.

“I spent my entire life watching you erase people when they became inconvenient.””

I held up the phone.

“But I’m not letting you erase this.””

Lucas stood.

“Mom, who is she?””

My mother looked at him.

Then at me.

Then at Alex.

Finally, she looked defeated.

“She was my assistant.””

I frowned.

“Your assistant?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

My mother avoided my eyes.

“How many years?””

She didn’t answer.

Alex stepped closer.

“Try again.””

My mother’s jaw tightened.

“Ten years.””

I stared at her.

“Ten years?””

Something about that number felt wrong.

Because ten years ago, I was sixteen.

The same year everything in our family started changing.

The year my mother stopped asking about school.

The year she started spending more time away from home.

The year I learned that being quiet was easier than being noticed.

“What does she have to do with me?”” I asked.

My mother looked uncomfortable.

“Nothing.””

Again.

That word.

Nothing.

My entire life had been filled with people saying nothing when the truth was standing right in front of them.

I looked at Alex.

He understood immediately.

“Find out who she is.””

My mother’s eyes snapped toward him.

“You don’t have the right.””

Alex looked at her.

“I have every right to protect my wife.””

My mother laughed bitterly.

“You really think money gives you control over everyone?””

“No.””

Alex’s answer came instantly.

“I think evidence does.””

The room fell silent.

My mother looked at the phone in my hand.

“What exactly did the picture prove?””

“That she was here.””

Alex paused.

“And that she was carrying a pair of scissors.””

Everyone froze.

My heart dropped.

“She was?””

Alex nodded.

“The security footage shows her arriving forty minutes before your mother entered Emily’s room.””

My eyes moved toward my mother.

She shook her head immediately.

“I didn’t know.””

I studied her face.

For once, she looked genuinely shocked.

But I didn’t know if I could believe it.

Not anymore.

“Then why did she do it?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marlene spoke.

Quietly.

“She always hated Emily.””

I turned.

My aunt looked uncomfortable.

“Hated me?””

Marlene looked down.

“Rachel thought you had everything.””

I almost smiled.

Everything?

The woman who destroyed my clothes thought I had everything?

“What did I have?””

My aunt hesitated.

“You were…”

She stopped.

I waited.

“You were the reason your mother was distracted.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

My aunt looked at my mother.

And that was when I knew.

There was another secret.

Another piece of my life that everyone knew except me.

“Mom?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Not here.””

“No.””

My voice cut through the room.

“Not anymore.””

I stepped forward.

“I am done hearing that things are complicated.””

My mother looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, my father quietly said:

“Victoria.””

She looked at him.

And something passed between them.

Something old.

Something painful.

Then my mother whispered:

“Rachel was supposed to be family.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She was going to marry someone in this family.””

The room became colder.

My eyes moved between everyone.

“Who?””

My mother looked toward Lucas.

My brother immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone turned to him.

His face had gone pale.

“Lucas?””

He looked away.

And that was all the answer I needed.

My chest tightened.

“Rachel was supposed to marry Lucas?””

Nobody answered.

Because they didn’t have to.

The truth was already there.

My brother looked ashamed.

“It was years ago.””

“How many years?””

“Three.””

I stared at him.

Three years ago.

Before his engagement.

Before his wedding.

Before everyone started pretending this was the happiest time of their lives.

“You dated her?””

Lucas swallowed.

“For a few months.””

My mother stepped in.

“It wasn’t serious.””

I looked at her.

“You introduced her to the family.””

“Yes.””

“And now she hates me?””

My mother’s silence was enough.

I felt something crack inside me.

Not because Lucas had dated someone.

Not because Rachel existed.

Because once again, I was the last person to know.

My entire family had built a story around me.

And I was always the only one missing from the meeting.

Alex looked at Lucas.

“Why did it end?””

Lucas looked uncomfortable.

“She found out I was going to marry someone else.””

“Why?””

“Because…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“Because I realized I didn’t love her.””

My mother sighed.

“Rachel became obsessed.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The woman standing outside my home.

The woman who had destroyed my clothes.

The woman who somehow knew about Alex.

“How did she know about me?””

Nobody answered.

That was the question that mattered.

Because Rachel wasn’t just angry.

She was informed.

She knew about my marriage.

She knew where I was staying.

She knew exactly when to hurt me.

Alex’s phone buzzed again.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What now?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

“Alex?””

He turned the phone toward me.

It was another message.

From an unknown number.

A single photograph.

I opened it.

And my heart stopped.

It was a picture of Alex and me.

Taken months ago.

At our private wedding ceremony.

A moment that had never been shared publicly.

A moment only a handful of people knew about.

Beneath the photo was a message.

*You should have told them who she really was.*

I looked at Alex.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t respond.

Because he was staring at the photograph too.

Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Emily…”

“What?””

His eyes lifted to mine.

“Rachel isn’t the person we need to be worried about.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then who is?””

Alex looked across the room.

Past my mother.

Past my aunt.

Past my brother.

Toward the person who had been silent the entire time.

My father.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

My father looked afraid.
