Chapter 10: The Baby They Couldn't Steal
I don't remember running upstairs.
I only remember Roy beside me.
Mason behind us.
Tessa clutching her stomach.
And that voice repeating inside my head.
Mom.
We reached the upper floor.
A monitor flickered on.
A live camera feed appeared.
A room.
A metal chair.
And a girl sitting inside it.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
A tiny birthmark beneath her left eye.
Emily.
Alive.
Older.
Terrified.
My daughter.
I touched the screen.
"Emily.""
Her eyes lifted.
"Mom?""
My knees nearly collapsed.
Roy caught me.
"I'm here.""
Emily looked toward the camera.
"Dad?""
Roy covered his mouth.
For twelve years, he'd believed he had no daughter.
Now she was staring at him.
"I love you," he whispered.
Emily began crying.
"Please get me out.""
A second figure entered the camera frame.
An older man.
Gray hair.
White coat.
He turned toward the camera.
Roy froze.
"Father.""
Richard Callahan smiled.
"Hello, son.""
Roy stepped toward the monitor.
"You murdered someone.""
Richard laughed.
"Not quite.""
"You let us believe you were dead.""
"I needed to disappear.""
"You stole Vanessa's DNA.""
"Borrowed.""
"You stole our child.""
"I protected her.""
I stepped forward.
"You kept her locked away.""
Richard looked directly into the camera.
"Because the world would have destroyed her.""
"No.""
My voice shook.
"You destroyed her.""
His smile faded.
"You don't understand what Emily is.""
"She's my daughter.""
"She's a genetic anomaly.""
"She's a child.""
"She's a match.""
"For whom?""
Richard glanced toward another monitor.
Lucas appeared.
The sick boy.
"Lucas.""
Richard nodded.
"His condition is fatal.""
"So you created Emily?""
"We created embryos capable of matching him.""
"How many?""
"Seven.""
My stomach turned.
"Seven children?""
"Seven embryos.""
"Where are the others?""
Richard didn't answer.
Roy shouted, "Where are they?""
Richard smiled.
"Some survived.""
"Some?""
"Some didn't.""
Tessa started crying.
Richard looked at her.
"And you were the final carrier.""
I stepped between Tessa and the monitor.
"She isn't carrying your property.""
"She's carrying my grandson.""
"He's my son.""
Richard laughed.
"Genetically, yes.""
Then he looked at me.
"And that's why you're here.""
I stared at him.
"What do you want?""
"Your consent.""
"For what?""
"To retrieve the embryo.""
"No.""
"You haven't heard the alternative.""
"I don't care.""
"If Lucas dies, hundreds of people will blame you.""
"I don't care.""
Richard leaned toward the camera.
"You are a doctor, Vanessa. You understand sacrifice.""
"Not when the patient is being used to justify murder.""
His expression hardened.
"Then Emily dies.""
I went cold.
"You wouldn't.""
"I already did once.""
Roy moved toward the monitor.
"Don't touch her.""
Richard smiled.
"Come to the operating room.""
The screen went black.
Mason immediately began typing.
"I can trace the camera.""
"Do it.""
"Give me two minutes.""
"I don't have two minutes.""
I looked around the room.
Then I noticed the emergency surgical map.
The old operating theater was beneath us.
I knew the layout.
"Come on.""
We ran.
The operating room doors opened.
Richard stood inside.
Two guards were with him.
Emily was strapped to a bed.
Tessa's medical file lay beside another bed.
I saw the setup.
They weren't preparing to operate on Emily.
They were preparing to perform an emergency procedure on Tessa.
"Stop!""
Richard turned.
"Vanessa.""
I walked forward.
"Let Emily go.""
"Not yet.""
"You want my consent.""
"Yes.""
"Then I'll give it.""
Roy stared at me.
"Vanessa, don't.""
I looked at him.
"Trust me.""
He understood something in my eyes.
He nodded.
I turned to Richard.
"I'll consent.""
Richard smiled.
"Good.""
"But first, you have to answer one question.""
"What?""
"Why did you need my DNA specifically?""
His smile disappeared.
"Because your genetic profile isn't ordinary.""
"I know.""
"No.""
He stepped closer.
"Your mother was part of the original program.""
I froze.
"My mother?""
"She was one of the first genetic donors.""
I shook my head.
"That's impossible.""
"She didn't know.""
I felt the room tilt.
"Then why?""
"Because she carried a mutation.""
"What mutation?""
Richard looked toward Lucas.
"One that can repair the gene destroying his bone marrow.""
I stared.
"You've been trying to create a cure.""
"Yes.""
"Then why all the secrecy?""
"Because the treatment requires embryos with the mutation.""
"And you couldn't get them legally.""
"Not enough.""
"So you stole them.""
Richard didn't answer.
I looked at Emily.
"She has the mutation.""
"Yes.""
"Tessa's baby?""
"Yes.""
I understood.
They weren't after money.
They weren't after an affair.
They were after a genetic solution.
But that didn't excuse what they'd done.
I walked toward Emily.
Richard raised a hand.
The guards moved.
Roy stepped in front of me.
"You touch my wife, and this ends badly.""
Richard laughed.
"You still think you're in control.""
Then Mason entered behind us.
"Actually, he isn't.""
Richard turned.
Mason held up a phone.
"I've been recording everything.""
Richard's face changed.
"You wouldn't.""
"I already did.""
The doors behind him opened.
Police officers flooded the room.
Richard stepped backward.
Evelyn entered with them.
She looked at Richard.
"It's over.""
Richard stared at her.
"You betrayed me.""
"I was never yours.""
He looked toward Emily.
Then Tessa.
Then me.
For the first time, he looked old.
The guards dropped their weapons.
Police arrested Richard.
The rest happened quickly.
The records were seized.
The fertility clinic was shut down.
Every stolen genetic sample was traced.
The hospital board resigned.
And the truth about my husband's supposed affair became public.
There had never been an affair.
There had never been another woman.
There had been a conspiracy.
But one thing still remained.
Tessa's baby.
My baby.
The pregnancy continued under careful medical supervision.
Seven months later, Tessa went into labor.
I was there.
Not as her doctor.
As family.
She held my hand through every contraction.
At 3:14 in the morning, a baby boy cried.
Tessa looked at me.
"Do you want to hold him?""
I cried before I could answer.
Roy stood beside me.
We looked at our son.
His tiny fingers wrapped around mine.
Roy whispered, "He's perfect.""
I smiled through tears.
"Yes.""
Across the room, Emily watched.
She was twelve now.
Alive.
Free.
She came closer.
"Can I hold him?""
Tessa smiled.
"Of course.""
Emily sat beside her.
I watched my daughter cradle her little brother.
For twelve years, I had believed the greatest tragedy in my life was the possibility that my husband had betrayed me.
I had been wrong.
The real betrayal was much bigger.
People had stolen our DNA.
They had stolen our children.
They had rewritten our medical histories.
They had turned human lives into numbers on charts.
But they made one mistake.
They assumed fear would keep us quiet.
It didn't.
Six months after Richard's arrest, I stood in court and testified against him.
Roy testified too.
So did Tessa.
And then Emily walked into the courtroom.
Richard looked at her.
For the first time, he had nothing to say.
She stood beside me.
I held her hand.
The judge asked if she wanted to speak.
Emily nodded.
Her voice was small.
But steady.
"My whole life, people told me I was a secret.""
She looked at Richard.
"I'm not.""
Then she looked at me.
"I'm Vanessa's daughter.""
The courtroom went silent.
I squeezed her hand.
Afterward, outside the courthouse, a reporter asked me one question.
"Dr. Callahan, when did you realize your husband wasn't cheating on you?""
I thought about Tessa walking into my office.
Her swollen belly.
Her cold warning.
*You need to divorce him.*
I thought about the altered charts.
The fake pregnancy.
The photograph of Emily.
The messages.
And that first question I'd asked Tessa.
How far along are you?
I smiled.
"The moment I stopped asking whether my husband was unfaithful," I said, "and started asking why someone wanted me to believe he was.""
The reporter lowered her microphone.
"And what happened?""
I looked at Roy.
Then at Emily.
Then at the baby sleeping in Tessa's arms.
"Everyone thought they already knew how the story went.""
I took Roy's hand.
"A cheating husband. A younger woman. A marriage that falls apart.""
I shook my head.
"They were wrong about every single part of it.""
Because the woman who walked into my office wasn't there to steal my husband.
She was there because someone had stolen something from both of us.
A child.
A family.
And twelve years of our lives.
May you like
But they didn't get to keep them.
Not anymore.
