Chapter 6: The File That Changed Everything

For three days, I replayed the recording.

Three days of hearing my own voice break apart through the speakers of my phone.

Three days of wondering whether the person I trusted most had been the person who betrayed me.

I hated Victor for planting the doubt.

But what terrified me was that he knew exactly where to place it.

Because he didn’t have to convince me Emily was guilty.

He only had to remind me that I had questions.

Questions I had buried for five years.

The apartment was dark when Admiral Hayes arrived.

He didn’t knock.

He called first.

“Harper, open the door.””

I looked through the peephole.

“Do you always order people around?””

His voice came through the door.

“Only when they’re about to make a decision that could get them killed.””

I opened it.

He walked inside carrying a black folder.

Not a briefcase.

Not a computer.

A folder.

The old-fashioned kind.

The kind that meant something dangerous was inside.

“You know about Victor,” I said.

Hayes didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because I didn’t know how deep he was involved.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone always says that.””

He placed the folder on my table.

“Open it.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

“The original Nightfall report.””

My stomach dropped.

“The report was destroyed.””

“The official one was.””

I opened the folder.

The first page had my name.

COMMANDER HARPER STERLING.

Below it:

MISSION STATUS: SUCCESSFUL.

I looked up.

“Successful?””

Hayes nodded.

“Yes.””

I turned the page.

The next line made my hands freeze.

*Primary objective achieved. Hostile network eliminated. All personnel recovered.*

“All personnel?””

My voice cracked.

“Emily was listed as dead.””

Hayes looked away.

“That was the official story.””

I flipped through the pages faster.

Names.

Locations.

Photographs.

Then I found something.

A signature.

My blood went cold.

Victor Sterling.

Authorization approval.

I looked at Hayes.

“He signed this.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he say Emily betrayed us?””

“Because someone needed a traitor.””

I closed the folder.

“And he chose her?””

“No.””

Hayes’ expression changed.

“He chose you.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“What?””

“He knew if you survived, you would expose what happened.””

My heart started pounding.

“But why would he let me survive?””

“Because he thought you wouldn’t remember.””

I felt a chill.

“I remembered everything.””

“No.””

Hayes shook his head.

“You remembered what you were supposed to remember.””

I stepped back.

“What does that mean?””

He pulled out another document.

A medical report.

My name.

Again.

I read the first sentence.

*Patient underwent emergency neurological stabilization following traumatic injury.*

I looked at Hayes.

“What is this?””

“The truth.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“No.””

“Harper.””

“No.””

Because I knew what he was saying before he said it.

“No one told me.””

Hayes lowered his voice.

“You had a traumatic brain injury.””

The room spun.

“You’re saying I forgot?””

“Parts of it.””

I looked at the scars on my arms.

The scars on my back.

The pieces of my life I could never explain.

“What happened after the mission?””

Hayes hesitated.

“That’s what we need Emily to tell you.””

I looked at him.

“Where is she?””

Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*Come alone if you want the real story.*

Below it was an address.

I showed Hayes.

His face changed immediately.

“No.””

“What?””

“You cannot go there.””

“Why?””

“Because I know that location.””

“Where is it?””

He looked at the screen.

Then at me.

“It’s where they took you after Nightfall.””

My blood ran cold.

The abandoned facility.

The place erased from every record.

The place I had spent five years trying to forget.

I grabbed my jacket.

Hayes stepped in front of me.

“Harper.””

I looked at him.

“If Emily is there, I’m going.””

His expression softened.

“You’re still exactly the same.””

“What does that mean?””

He looked at the scars on my back.

“The Navy lost a great commander five years ago.””

A pause.

“But the world gained someone who refuses to leave people behind.””

I walked past him.

Then stopped.

“Admiral?””

“Yes?””

“If I find out you knew more than you told me…”

He nodded.

“I know.””

I left.

But I didn’t notice the black SUV following me.

And I didn’t notice the person inside making a phone call.

“She’s heading to the facility.””

A pause.

Then a familiar voice answered.

“Good.””

Victor Sterling.

“Let her find the truth.””

The voice became colder.

“Because once she remembers everything…”

May you like

A silence.

“She’ll finally understand why we had to erase her.””
