Chapter 5: The Name on My Birth Certificate

Nobody spoke.

I looked at the photograph again, then at Dad.

He stood perfectly still, his hands hanging at his sides, his face so pale that the freckles across his nose seemed darker.

“That's impossible,” I whispered.

Jennifer placed the printed email on the table.

“Ethan, I know this is a lot to process. We don't have to discuss everything at once.””

I shook my head.

“No. I want to know.””

My voice cracked.

“I want to know why my mother wrote that letter, why Vanessa changed the trust, and why my father looks like someone just told him his whole life was a lie.””

Dad closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he looked older than I'd ever seen him.

“Ethan, I loved your mother. I raised you as my son because you are my son in every way that matters.””

I stared at him.

“That's not what I asked.””

He swallowed.

“No. It isn't.””

Jennifer pulled out a chair.

“Let's sit down.””

Nobody listened.

I placed the photograph on the table.

“Is Peter Lawson my biological father?””

Dad looked at the photograph.

Then he nodded once.

The room tilted.

I gripped the back of a chair.

Vanessa began crying again, but I couldn't look at her. I couldn't look at anyone.

My entire life had been built around a story I had never questioned.

My father was Marcus Bennett. My mother was Claire Bennett. She had died when I was five, and Dad had raised me alone until Vanessa entered our lives.

That was the story I knew.

Now I was being told that another man had helped create me, that my mother had hidden the truth, and that my stepmother had apparently known about it for years.

“How long have you known?”” I asked Dad.

He sat down heavily.

“I found out when your mother was in the hospital.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Claire told me the truth shortly before she died. She was afraid you would grow up believing you were unwanted. She asked me to raise you and never make you feel like you were anything less than my son.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I promised her I wouldn't until you were old enough to understand. We agreed that you would receive the full explanation, along with the trust documents, when you turned eighteen.””

I glanced at the letter.

“Then why does it say not to let me learn the truth from Vanessa?””

Dad looked toward his wife.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Because Claire suspected Vanessa would use the information against you,” he said.

My stomach tightened.

“Use it how?””

Jennifer answered before Dad could.

“The trust appears to contain a clause protecting the beneficiary from financial exploitation. If someone attempts to redirect its assets without proper authority, the trustee is required to notify the successor trustee and the beneficiary's legal representative.””

She tapped the printed email.

“Someone requested access to the original file this morning. We need to establish whether that request was legitimate and whether any amendments were properly authorized.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew I wasn't Dad's biological son.””

She wiped her face.

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

“Did you tell Daniel?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Dad stood.

“Vanessa.””

She pressed her palms together.

“Yes. Daniel knew.””

“Why?””

“Because he helped me understand the trust.””

Jennifer leaned forward.

“Was Daniel involved in preparing or filing the amendment that changed the trustee?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Jennifer's voice sharpened.

“Mrs. Bennett, I need you to understand that we're discussing legal documents and substantial financial transfers. If you know who prepared those papers, now is the time to say so.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I never wanted Ethan to lose anything.””

I laughed, but it came out broken.

“You let me go hungry at school.””

Her face crumpled.

“I didn't know you were skipping lunch.””

“You told me I was selfish for asking for twenty dollars.””

“I was under pressure.””

“You bought a designer handbag last month.””

She flinched.

“You don't understand the situation.””

“No,” I said.

“I don't. Because you never let me understand anything.””

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.

I stepped away.

Not because I didn't want him near me, but because I needed to stand on my own for a moment.

I looked at Jennifer.

“What does the trust actually contain?””

She opened a folder.

“We don't have a verified current balance yet. The documents we've reviewed indicate that Claire established a property trust and a separate investment account for your benefit. The property on Willow Creek Road was intended to remain yours, and the investment account was designed to support your education and living expenses.””

“How much money?””

“The original documents refer to an investment portfolio, but we need the custodian's statements to confirm its present value.””

Dad frowned.

“Claire told me there was enough to cover college and help Ethan get started in life.””

Jennifer nodded.

“That is consistent with what I'm seeing.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know how much was in it?””

She stared at the floor.

“Yes.””

“How much?””

“I don't remember.””

Jennifer slid a document toward her.

“Then let's start with this. Do you recognize the account number?””

Vanessa looked at the page.

Her shoulders sagged.

“Yes.””

“Whose account is it?””

She took a long breath.

“It was originally held by a trust company. When Richard Hale retired, the administration transferred to a new firm. Daniel told me the old records were incomplete, and that I could become temporary financial representative while the new trustee was appointed.””

Jennifer's expression remained neutral.

“Who told you that?””

“Daniel.””

“Did you verify it with the trust company?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“Did you contact Claire's original attorney?””

“No.””

“Did you obtain written approval from the successor trustee?””

Vanessa shook her head.

Jennifer closed the folder.

“Then the next step is to obtain the complete trust file and transaction history. Until that happens, no one should move or transfer any assets.””

Dad turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you know Peter was the successor trustee?””

She hesitated.

“I knew he was involved.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“Yes,” she whispered.

Dad's face tightened.

“How long?””

“Three years.””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Three years.

Three years of stolen money, hidden documents, and carefully constructed explanations.

Three years of me wearing worn-out shoes while someone else lived in my mother's house.

Three years during which my father had believed he was providing for me.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

She stared at her hands.

“Because I was afraid of what would happen when you turned eighteen.””

“Why would my eighteenth birthday matter?””

Jennifer answered carefully.

“Some trusts transfer control or certain rights to the beneficiary at a specified age. We need to review Claire's actual documents before determining what happens in your case.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. That's not all of it.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She rose and walked to the window.

“Peter told me that when Ethan turned eighteen, he would have the right to request a complete accounting. He could see every dollar that had entered the trust, every payment that had been made, and every person who had benefited from it.””

Dad frowned.

“Why would that concern you if the money was being used properly?””

Vanessa pressed her forehead against the glass.

“Because it wasn't.””

Her admission landed heavily.

Jennifer reached for her pen.

“How much did you redirect?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you transfer money to yourself?””

“No.””

“To Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Vanessa's voice became barely audible.

“More than the fifty-two thousand.””

Dad gripped the back of a chair.

“How much more?””

“I don't know the exact amount.””

Jennifer leaned forward.

“Did you authorize any payments from the trust to Northstar Residential Services?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Was Northstar controlled by Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“And did you receive any personal benefit from those payments?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said, “I received a portion of the rental income.””

Dad stared at her.

“You were collecting rent from my son's house?””

“I used the money to pay household expenses.””

“Which household expenses?””

She looked at him.

“Mortgage payments. Utilities. Groceries.””

Dad's face twisted with disbelief.

“You told me you were using my company salary to cover those expenses.””

“I was trying to keep everything stable!””

“You were using Ethan's inheritance to subsidize our household while telling him he couldn't have twenty dollars!””

Vanessa began sobbing.

Jennifer held up a hand.

“Mr. Bennett, please. We need to preserve the records and establish the facts.””

Dad turned away.

I felt strangely numb.

The money mattered, but it wasn't the only thing I'd lost.

I had lost the ability to trust my own memories.

Every time Vanessa had said we couldn't afford something, I would now wonder whether she had been lying.

Every time she'd hugged me, I would wonder whether she had been thinking about the money.

Every time she'd told me I was part of the family, I would remember the empty place at the kitchen table where I used to sit while everyone else ate.

I walked to the front window.

Outside, a school bus rolled past our driveway.

A group of students laughed as they climbed off, backpacks bouncing against their shoulders.

For a moment, I wished I could trade places with any one of them.

Not because their lives were perfect.

Because they could go home without wondering whether the people inside were hiding the truth about who they were.

Behind me, Jennifer asked another question.

“Mrs. Bennett, did you ever communicate directly with Peter Lawson about the trust?””

Vanessa answered softly.

“Yes.””

“When was the last time?””

“This morning.””

Dad turned.

“This morning?””

She nodded.

“What did you discuss?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“He told me someone had requested the original trust documents. He said I needed to make sure Marcus didn't discover the amendments before the records were reviewed.””

Jennifer's expression changed.

“Did he identify who made the request?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. He just said the file was being reopened.””

Dad took out his phone.

“Then we're calling Peter.””

Jennifer raised a hand.

“Not yet. We should contact him through counsel and request the documents formally.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“I've spent three years believing my son was being provided for. I'm not waiting another day to find out who has been controlling his inheritance.””

He dialed the number from the email.

It rang four times.

Then a man answered.

“Peter Lawson speaking.””

Dad put the call on speaker.

“This is Marcus Bennett.””

A pause.

Then Peter said, “I wondered when you'd call.””

Dad's eyes narrowed.

“You knew about the money?””

“I knew there were irregularities.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I was trying to establish what happened before making accusations.””

Dad laughed bitterly.

“My son was going without lunch while someone collected rent from his property.””

Peter was silent.

Then he said, “Marcus, I need to speak with Ethan.””

I moved toward the phone.

“I'm here.””

There was a long pause.

When Peter spoke again, his voice had softened.

“Ethan, my name is Peter Lawson. I was your mother's brother.””

“I know.””

“I should have contacted you years ago.””

“Why didn't you?””

He exhaled slowly.

“Because your mother asked me to stay away until you were old enough to understand what happened.””

I looked at the letter on the table.

“What happened?””

“Your mother discovered that someone was trying to gain control of her estate before she died. She changed the trust arrangements to protect you.””

My heart began pounding.

“Who was trying to take it?””

Peter didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, “Ethan, the person who requested access to the trust this morning wasn't Daniel Cross.””

Vanessa looked up sharply.

Dad leaned toward the phone.

“Then who was it?””

Peter's answer was quiet.

“Your mother named that person in a sealed letter. I've kept it with the original trust documents for eleven years.””

I swallowed.

“Who did she name?””

Peter took a breath.

May you like

Then he said the words that made Vanessa stumble backward into the table.

“She named Marcus Bennett.””
